Herbivorous fishes and the potential of Caribbean marine reserves to preserve coral reef ecosystems ArchiMer

1. The development of macroalgae to the detriment of corals is now one of the major threats to coral reefs. Herbivorous fishes are partly responsible for algal regulation on coral reefs and their overexploitation favours the shift from scleractinian coral-dominated systems towards macroalgae-dominated systems. 2. Marine protected areas (MPAs) that have been established worldwide may benefit coral reefs through the maintenance of high densities of herbivorous fishes which regulate algal growth. 3. History and dynamics of the overexploitation of the blackspot sea bream (Pagellus bogaraveo) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

The blackspot sea bream (Pagellus bogaraveo) used to be a major species in the landings from the Bay of Biscay up to the early 1980s. Nowadays, it is only a minor bycatch. Up to the mid-70s, more than 15 000 tonnes of blackspot sea bream were landed annually in Spanish and French ports. Then, catches declined sharply from 1975 to 1985 and have stayed at low levels ever since. Here, the full history of the fishery collapse is described using time-series of landings since the 1900s. Fishing mortalities of the main demersal stocks (hake, anglerfish, sole) were in the range 0.2-0.5 during the last 30 years. Sex determination in the oyster Crassostrea gigas - A large longitudinal study of population sex ratios and individual sex changes ArchiMer

Understanding sex determination in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, a sequential hermaphrodite, can provide prospective on the evolution of sex-determining systems for comparative reproduction from an evolutionary perspective. Surprisingly, this mechanism is still poorly understood. To date, sex ratio and sex change have never been studied at the individual level for a large size group and long-term monitoring. To this purpose, we performed an ambitious individual long-term follow-up (6 years) on a large population (cohort 1: 7488 oysters) produced from wild oysters, as well as for a second population produced from the cohort 1 (cohort 2: 4320 oysters).
