Aspects of the reproductive biology and characterization of Sciaenidae captured as bycatch in the prawn trawling in the northeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Silva Júnior, Carlos Antonio Beserra da; Viana, Andréa Pontes; Frédou, Flávia Lucena; Frédou, Thierry.
The Brazilian prawn fishery, as other bottom trawling fisheries, is considered quite efficient in catching the target species but with low selectivity and high rates of bycatch. The family Sciaenidae prevails among fish species caught. The study was conducted in the Pernambuco State (Barra de Sirihaém), northeastern Brazil. From August 2011 to July 2012, 3,278 sciaenid specimens were caught, distributed into 16 species, 34.2% males and 41.5% females. Larimus breviceps, Isopisthus parvipinnis, Paralonchurus brasiliensis and Stellifer microps were the most abundant species. The area was considered a recruitment and reproduction area with the highest reproductive activity between December 2011 and July 2012. The constant frequency of mature I. parvipinnis and...

Reproductive biology of Thamnodynastes hypoconia (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) in Brazilian subtemperate wetlands Anais da ABC (AABC)
REBELATO,MARLUCI M.; PONTES,GLÁUCIA M.F.; TOZETTI,ALEXANDRO M..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of populations of Thamnodynastes hypoconia in subtemperate wetlands based on macroscopic analyses of their gonads. We analyzed 101 specimens from the southernmost regions of Brazil. The males had a greater snout-vent length, but the females reached sexual maturity with a greater body size. The reproductive cycle of the females was seasonal, with secondary vitellogenesis occurring between the winter and spring (May-October). Based on macroscopic analysis of gonads, data suggests that males have a continuous reproductive cycle. Parturition occurs between the late summer and early fall (January-April). The clutch size ranged between 4 and 16 embryos and showed no relationship with the female's...

SIZE AT SEXUAL MATURITY IN THE QUEEN CONCH STROMBUS GIGAS FROM COLOMBIA Boletín de Investigaciones
Avila-Poveda,Omar Hernando; Baqueiro-Cárdenas,Erick Raúl.
Size at sexual maturity was investigated in 346 queen conch, Strombus gigas, collected from the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina (SAI), Colombia. Size at sexual maturity is defined as the size (based on total shell length and lip thickness) at which 50% of the population of queen conch sampled had mature and emission gonad developmental stages, based on microscopic examination (samples of gonads were processed by standardized histological methods). Only 12.14% of whole samples had mature and emission gonad developmental stages. The size at sexual maturity based on total shell length (STmat) was estimated to be STmat=249 mm for females (n=14), STmat=234 mm for males (n=28) and STmat=241 mm for both sexes (n=42). Lip thickness...

Use of otoliths to estimate size at sexual maturity in fish BABT
Agostinho,Carlos Sérgio.
The viability of an alternative method for estimating the size at sexual maturity of females of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) was analyzed. This methodology was used to evaluate the size at sexual maturity in crabs, but has not yet been used for this purpose in fishes. Separation of young and adult fishes by this method is accomplished by iterative adjustment of straight-line segments to the data for length of the otolith and length of the fish. The agreement with the estimate previously obtained by another technique and the possibility of calculating the variance indicates that in some cases, the method analyzed can be used successfully to estimate size at sexual maturity in fish. However, additional studies are necessary to detect...

Structural indexes and sexual maturity of tambaqui Colossoma macropomum (cuvier, 1818) (Characiformes: Characidae) in Central Amazon, Brazil BJB
VILLACORTA-CORREA,M. A.; SAINT-PAUL,U..
Length, weight, structural index and sexual maturity in tambaqui Colossoma macropomum were analysed. 449 specimens were obtained from the commercial fishing fleet arriving at Manaus Harbour from the floodplain areas from May 1992 to July 1993. The objective of this study is to describe changes in structural index during one hidrological cycle and to interpret them according to the water level fluctuations and to also determine the time, reproductive period and length in sexual maturity. Sex ratio in tambaqui was 1:1 however, the length of females was significantly longer than males'. Length/weight relationship was described by the expression: Pt = 0.00058*Cp2.9039. b value was significantly different from 3 which meant an alometric growth. Lower condition...

Reproductive biology of the sesarmid crab Armases rubripes (Decapoda, Brachyura) from an estuarine area of the Sahy River, Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lima,Giovana V.; Soares,Marcelo R. S.; Oshiro,Lídia M.Y..
The aim of this work was to gain knowledge about reproductive biology of the crab Armases rubripes (Rathbun, 1897) from an estuarine area of the Sepetiba Bay. Samples were taken monthly from February 2003 to January 2004 in the Sahy River estuary (22º56'S; 44º01'W), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The crabs were collected by hand during 15-minute catch-effort sessions conducted by two people. In the laboratory, the specimens were separated by sex, carapace width was measured and gonadal stage was checked macroscopically. A total of 830 individuals were caught - 304 males, 373 females (60 ovigerous females) and 153 juveniles. The ovigerous females were found almost year-round, except in November and April, showing a continuous reproductive period. They presented a...

Barradas,José R. S.; Lermen,Isabel S.; Larré,Gabriel G.; Martins,Thaís P.; Fontoura,Nelson F..
ABSTRACT A weight-length relationship was established for Corydoras paleatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) (n=596) from samples taken in November-December 2009 and March-April 2010, in Pinguela Lagoon (29°46'57"S; 50°11'16"W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The species showed a polyphasic allometric growth pattern, each stanza described by an independent power equation controlled by a switch function: W = a1Lb1 ∙ (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1 + a2Lb2 ∙ [1 - (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1] ; where W is the expected weight for a specific length L, a1 and a2 are the proportionality coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, b1 and b2 are the allometric coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, Rsc is the stanza changing rate for the switch function and SCP is the stanza changing...

Variation of heavy metal concentrations (Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, V, and Zn) during the life cycle of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis ArchiMer
Miramand, Pierre; Bustamante, Paco; Bentley, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
The developmental changes in the concentration of 8 essential and non-essential heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Co, Fe, Pb, V, Zn) in the tissues (digestive gland, cuttlebone and whole animal) of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis collected in the bay of the river Seine were monitored from the end of the embryogenesis until the adult reproductive stage. Compared to embryos, juveniles after hatching displayed much higher concentrations of Ag, Cu, Fe and Zn, suggesting an efficient incorporation from seawater. Conversely, the amounts of Cd, Pb and V in hatchlings remained constant suggesting that these metals are barely bioavailable for juveniles. Once the juveniles start to feed, the digestive gland appears to play a major role in the storage of all metals....

Exploitation, biologie et dynamique du stock de langouste rouge de Corse, Palinurus elephas Fabricius ArchiMer
Marin, Jean.
The European red spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. This fishery was described, its trends from 1981 to 1964 were analysed, and the exploitation conditions of the spiny lobster stock (fishing grounds, strategy and gear ; fishing regulations) were explained. Furthermore, the fishing effort and the yields were estimated through an indirect survey, in 1983 and 1984 . The growth was studied through tagging experiments. Growth increment per moult, Von BERTALANFFY's equation parameters, and moulting frequency were estimated for both sexes. Bias risks associated to tag loss at moulting were also analysed. In addition, estimates of K and L∞ variances were provided through "Jack-knife"...

Maturation and spawning of tropical and subtropical marine finfish by environmental manipulations ArchiMer
Roberts Jr, D.
Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae.

Induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermation by LHRH or an LHRH analog associated or not with pimozide. Effects on some teleost fish. ArchiMer
Billard, R; Weil, C; Barnabe, G.
Effectiveness of LHRH and one of its analogs (LHRH-A = D-Ala super(6) ethylamide) on induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermiation is reviewed here. LHRH was also combined with pimozide, an anti-dopaminergic agent, to try to cancel dopamine inhibition of gonatotropin (GtH) release. LHRH-A alone (50 mu g/kg) did not initiate ovulation but only oocyte maturation. When pimozide (10 mg/kg) and LHRH-A (50 mu g/kg) were combined, gonadotropic hormone secretion was significantly increased, causing ovulation and stimulating spermiation. This combination advanced ovulation in trout. Trout egg quality was markedly altered by the pimozide treatment; it remains to be tested in carp. In sea bass, LHRH-A was much more effective than LHRH, and ovulation was...

Etude experimentale de la maturation ovocytaire chez Pecten maximus et Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Widowati, L; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dorange, G; Le Pennec, M.
To date, it has been impossible to fertilize the oocytes of ripe Pecten maximus obtained by gonad stripping as it is routinely done in hatchery with Crassostrea gigas . The events occurring between artificial induction of spawning and normal fertilization were studied experimentally in order to explain this difference. Fertilization and rearing trials were performed on oocytes obtained from the gonads of both species by scarification, by aspiration from genital ducts (of P. maximus only) and after spawning. Every batch of oocytes was fixed for histological study. Serial sections of the gonad of a fixed spawning P. maximus were made to reveal modifications of the nucleus of the oocytes during their expulsion. In P. maximus the stripped oocytes can be...

Utilisation de critères fonctionnels (présence de spermatophore, maturation des ovaires) pour la détermination de la taille et de l'âge à maturité sexuelle des Nephrops norvegicus femelles de la région sud-Bretagne ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon.
The average length at which female Nephrops norvegicus attain their first maturity was determined during 1977 and 1978 by following the presence of spermatophores and development of the ovaries. During 1978, females were sexually mature at the age of 2 but in 1977 they did not mature before the age of 3. The cumulative maturity curves are sigmoid, due to an overlapping of Gaussian curves. A logistic equation was developed to calculate the percentage of mature females at each length. There is no evidence that the present fishing levels reduce the chances of a female with developing ovaries to be fertilized, since 90 to 100% of such females bear spermatophores.

Reproduction et recrutement de la coque Cerastoderma edule L. a Saint-Pol-de-Leon (Bretagne Nord) ArchiMer
Guillou, Jean-louis; Tartu, C.
Investigation on the recruitment of Cerastoderma edule was carried out at St-Pol-de-Leon over three years. This approach is intended to disclose in the fluctuations of recruitment the part of variability linked with reproduction and spawning. Stages of sexual maturity are used together with a condition index. The reproductive activity spread out over the most part of the year, ripe individuals being observed even in winter. Main spawning took place in summer and autumn. Seasonal and interannual fluctuations of recruitment are associated with the variations of the condition index. An increase of the reproductive activity could be observed between 1987 and 1989 related with temperature. It is shown that this factor is the main responsible of the variations...

Observations sur la maturité sexuelle et la ponte du tourteau Cancer pagurus en Manche ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Noel, Philippe.
Few observations have been reported on the reproductive cycle and size at maturity of female edible crab in the Channel. This could be linked to non catchability of berried females. During the present study carried over three different years, females were taken from commercial catches prior to the spawning period and placed in tanks in the laboratory. The various criteria used to establish the mean size at first maturity are discussed and the relation between size and functional maturity is described. The smallest berried females are at a carapace length of 76mm, and maximum values are reached at about 105mm. The mean value is between 85 and 90mm carapace length. The duration of the spawning period was the same in each years, extending from mid-November to...

Role of steroid hormones and external factors in the control of pituitary gonadotropic activity of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla ). ArchiMer
Leloup, H; Fontaine, Y; Dufour, S; Querat, B.
Gonadotropic activity is relatively low in the female freshwater (FW) eel (A. anguilla ): pituitary GTH was about 15 ng equivalent cGTH/mg fresh tissue. Plasma GTH was always less than 1 ng equivalent cGTH/ml and often undetectable (< 0.2 ng equivalent cGTH/ml). Ovarian steroidogenesis in FW fish is similarly low; plasma concentration of both free testosterone (T) and free estradiol (E sub(2)) were less than 0.3 ng/ml as measured by RIA. Treatment with E sub(2) in FW fish caused a great increase in pituitary GTH, up to 1000 times control values, without changing plasma GTH. Stimulation of gonadotropic activity and ovarian development occur during the eel's migration to the Sargasso Sea. Adaptation to seawater (SW) caused a great increase of plasma E...
