Test of Convergence in Agricultural Factor Productivity: A Semiparametric Approach AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Pandit, Mahesh; Poudel, Biswo N..
We tested for club convergence in U.S. agricultural total factory productivity using a sigma convergence test. We used the same club of states as used by McCunn and Huffman as well as different states within 10 clubs identified by the cluster analysis. Results showed convergence was evident only in a few club groups. Clusters group identified using a statistical method identified only converging clubs. Variables affecting total factor productivity among states were identified using parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric methods. Semiparametric and nonparametric methods gave a better fit than a parametric method as indicated by the specification test. Our results indicated that health care expenditure, public research and extension investment, and...

Sigma convergence in Hungarian agriculture AgEcon
Lamfalusi, Ibolya.
The present paper provides an analysis of agricultural sigma convergence in four old Member States and in Hungary. The analysis was derived from the output and input data from the Economic Accounts for Agriculture between 1990-2005. The results obtained indicate significant convergence in the old Member States and Hungary. First of all this held true for incomes but the inputs do not reveal a perceptible pattern. However, in terms of outputs Hungary lags well behind the Old Member States, but the difference is not nearly as great for inputs. This can probably be explained by the fact that the rate of increase for inputs is higher than for producer prices, meaning the relative prices of agricultural output and input products (agricultural terms of trade)...

Convergence Hypothesis: Some Dynamics and Explanations of Agricultural Growth across Indian States AgEcon
Somasekharan, Jayasekhar; Prasad, Syam; Roy, V.P. Nirmal.
In the recent years there has been considerable emphasis on understanding the regional dimensions of economic growth in India within the convergence implications of neoclassical growth paradigm. The study has tested the convergence hypothesis in per capita agricultural output and foodgrains productivity across the major 15 states of India. During 1971-2007, Indian states have exhibited sigma divergence in per capita agricultural output. The study on relationship between initial foodgrain output and growth rates has shown a divergence pattern rather than convergence during 1971-1988, and we could observe a weak convergence during 1988-2007.
