Demography of the endangered tree species Ocotea porosa (Lauraceae) along a gradient of forest disturbance in southern Brazil 39
Munhoz,Cibele Amato; Silva,José Vicente da; Marques,Márcia C. M..
Ocotea porosa (Ness) Barroso (Lauraceae), a typical tree of the southern Atlantic Forest in Brazil, was heavily exploited for timber in the last century. With the aim of examining the status of the remaining populations, we surveyed five forest fragments in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil, and evaluated whether disturbances caused by selective logging and fragmentation were related to population structure of O. porosa. We assessed demographic aspects related to tree density, size hierarchy and individual allometry, correlating those parameters with fragment structure variables (fragment size, isolation and logging level). We found that, although all populations occurred in low densities (60-440 individuals ha−¹), the number of adults was...

POPULATION STRUCTURE OF GRENADIER FISH COELORINCHUS CAELORHINCUS IN DEEP WATERS OF THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN COAST 50
Paramo,Jorge; Motta,Jasney; Hoz,Javier De La.
ABSTRACT The objective of the study is to describe the patterns of spatial distribution and size structure of Coelorinchus caelorhincus in deep-sea waters of Colombian Caribbean. The samples were collected with trawling in depths between 200 and 550 m. Statistically significant differences in the sizes of the sexes were found, indicating sexual dimorphism. The length structure by depth strata showed a size increase with depth for both females and males. The length at sexual maturity in females was 17.238 cm TL. The spatial distribution indicates that in the northeastern area the higher aggregations were off the coast of the Magdalena River, off Santa Marta and Riohacha cities. In the southwestern area the higher aggregations were towards the northern part...

Ciliophora, Foraminifera...

Variability of key biological parameters of round sardinella Sardinella aurita and the effects of environmental changes 5
Balde, Bocar Sabaly; Sow, Fambaye N.; Ba, Kamarel; Ekau, Werner; Brehmer, Patrice; Kantoussan, Justin; Fall, Massal; Diouf, Malick.
We examined growth rates and reproductive characteristics of Sardinella aurita off Senegal and other coastal areas over a 20 year period (1995-2014) to determine how they relate to variations in environmental characteristics of coastal waters. Based on fish length-frequency data and a coastal upwelling index, we found that S. aurita recruitment tends to occur during the periods of most intensive upwelling (March-April off Senegal). Peak reproduction corresponds to periods of low sea-surface temperature (in February or March). The sex ratio was remarkably consistent during the 30 year study period and so was not affected by environmental changes. We hypothesise that S. aurita takes advantage of the higher zooplankton productivity that occurs in coastal...

The Seasonal and Inter-Annual Fluctuations of Plankton Abundance and Community Structure in a North Atlantic Marine Protected Area 5
Benedetti, Fabio; Jalabert, Laëtitia; Sourisseau, Marc; Becker, Beatriz; Cailliau, Caroline; Desnos, Corinne; Elineau, Amanda; Irisson, Jean-olivier; Lombard, Fabien; Picheral, Marc; Stemmann, Lars; Pouline, Patrick.
Marine Protected Areas have become a major tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity and resources. Yet our understanding of their efficacy is often limited because it is measured for a few biological components, typically top predators or species of commercial interest. To achieve conservation targets, marine protected areas can benefit from ecosystem-based approaches. Within such an approach, documenting the variation of plankton indicators and their covariation with climate is crucial as plankton represent the base of the food webs. With this perspective, we sought to document the variations in the emerging properties of the plankton to better understand the dynamics of the pelagic fishes, mammals and seabirds that inhabit the region. For the...

The importance and distinctiveness of small-sized phytoplankton in the Magellan Straits 5
Zingone, Adriana; Sarno, Diana; Siano, Raffaele; Marino, Donato.
The distribution of summer phytoplankton across the Straits of Magellan (SOM) was studied with the aims of tracing differences among the distinct subregions of the area and contributing to the knowledge of its biodiversity. Samples collected at 25 stations were observed and counted in light microscopy. Selected samples were observed with transmission electron microscopy. The main unifying feature of the phytoplankton in the SOM was the high abundance and numerical dominance of small-sized (<10 μm) eukaryotic species, among which coccoid cells of <3 μm size were predominant (56.2 ± 30.6 of the total phytoplankton abundance). They mostly belonged to the prasinophyte Pycnococcus provasolii, which was abundant (0.8–6,834 cells × 103 ml−1) at all stations...

Position and Perspectives of Small Farms with Respect to the Structure Development of Subsequent Vertical Link 31
Blazkova, Ivana; Sadilek, Tomas.
The objective of the paper is to find out the position and perspectives of small farms’ production sales with respect to the structure development of subsequent vertical stage. Structure development is evaluated in terms of company’s size, which is defined according to the number of the persons employed. The analysis is based on the assumption that small farms are able to sell their production rather to small than big processors and the question is whether the small processors give stability and certainty for small farms. The paper deals with chosen commodity chains in the Czech Republic. As an example of the variability in the food industry there were chosen two processing sectors that are important processors of diverse commodity sources of production...
