Control of the skin scarring response Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ferreira,Lydia M.; Gragnani,Alfredo; Furtado,Fabianne; Hochman,Bernardo.
There comes a time when the understanding of the cutaneous healing process becomes essential due to the need for a precocious tissue repair to reduce the physical, social, and psychological morbidity. Advances in the knowledge on the control of interaction among cells, matrix and growth factors will provide more information on the Regenerative Medicine, an emerging area of research in medical bioengineering. However, considering the dynamism and complexity of the cutaneous healing response, it is fundamental to understand the control mechanism exerted by the interaction and synergism of both systems, cutaneous nervous and central nervous, via hypothalamus hypophysis-adrenal axis, a relevant subject, but hardly ever explored. The present study reviews the...

Dermatosparaxis in two White Doper lambs in Brazil: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,A.P.C.; Mol,J.P.S.; Carvalho Junior,C.A.; Paixão,T.A.; Santos,R.L..
Dermatosparaxis is a genetic disease that affects collagen maturation. This disease is characterized by marked impairment of the resistance of collagen fibers that leads to skin fragility, and it may affect several species. This is the first report of dermatosparaxis in sheep in Brazil. Clinically, two White Dorper lambs had multiple skin lacerations in the neck, dorsum and limbs. Transmission microscopy demonstrated irregular collagen fibers arranged in hieroglyphic shape and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated thin collagen fibrils that were not arranged in bundles as observed in the normal dermis. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of dermatosparaxis.

Metastatic well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in the prepuce of a dog: a report of clinicopathological, immunophenotypic and therapeutic approach Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Auler,P.A.; Gamba,C.O.; Horta,R.S.; Lavalle,G.E.; Cassali,G.D..
This report describes a case of a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the foreskin of a dog, with metastasis in the regional lymph node. A six-year-old male intact Pit Bull dog presented a preputial ulcerated lesion with an evolution time of one year and enlarged left inguinal lymph node. Surgical resection of the preputial lesion and inguinal lymph nodes was made. The diagnosis of a well differentiated SCC was made following histopathological analysis and immunohistochemistry technique was used to confirm lymph node metastasis and to determine the histological features of the tumor. Here we demonstrated that immunohistochemistry can be an important complementary diagnostic tool to assess the prognostic features of SCC and to determine the...

Antibacterial activity of lactose-binding lectins from Bufo arenarum skin Biocell
Sánchez Riera,Alicia; Daud,Adriana; Gallo,Adriana; Genta,Susana; Aybar,Manuel; Sánchez,Sara.
Amphibians respond to microbial infection through cellular and humoral defense mechanisms such as antimicrobial protein secretion. Most humoral defense proteins are synthetized in the skin. In this study we isolated two b-galactoside-binding lectins with molecular weights of 50 and 56 KDa from the skin of Bufo arenarum. These lectins have significant hemagglutination activity against trypsinized rabbit erythrocytes, which was inhibited by galactose-containing saccharides. They are water-soluble and independent of the presence of calcium. The antimicrobial analysis for each lectin was performed. At mmolar concentration lectins show strong bacteriostatic activity against Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli K12 4100 and wild strains of Escherichia coli...

S-100 dendritic cells immunolabeling were investigated in uninfested skin biopsies from five Nelores, five Holstein-Friesian and five crossbreed (Holstein-Friesian x Nelores) calves. The group of crossbreed animal was experimentally infested with 100 first-instar larvae of Dermatobia hominis and biopsies were obtained 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours after infestation. Samples obtained prior to infestation from these animals were used as control. Rabbit anti-protein S-100 antibody and the avidin-biotin-peroxidase method were used for immunolabeling. Melanocytes, nerves and endothelial cells and dermal dendritic cells (DC) were positive to protein S-100. DCs were exclusively detected in the superficial dermis close to the basal layer of both normal and parasitized...

Gonçalves,W.L.S.; Souza,F.M.; Conti,C.L.; Cirqueira,J.P.; Rocha,W.A.; Pires,J.G.P.; Barros,L.A.P.; Moysés,M.R..
We determined the effects of helium-neon (He-Ne) laser irradiation on wound healing dynamics in mice treated with steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Male albino mice, 28-32 g, were randomized into 6 groups of 6 animals each: control (C), He-Ne laser (L), dexamethasone (D), D + L, celecoxib (X), and X + L. D and X were injected im at doses of 5 and 22 mg/kg, respectively, 24 h before the experiment. A 1-cm long surgical wound was made with a scalpel on the abdomens of the mice. Animals from groups L, D + L and X + L were exposed to 4 J (cm²)-1 day-1 of He-Ne laser for 12 s and were sacrificed on days 1, 2, or 3 after the procedure, when skin samples were taken for histological examination. A significant increase of collagen synthesis was...

No evidence for mutations in exons 1, 8 and 18 of the patched gene in sporadic skin lesions of Brazilian patients BJMBR
Granja,F.; Santarosa,P.L.; Leite,J.L.A.A.P.; Ward,L.S..
There is strong evidence that the patched (PTCH) gene is a gene for susceptibility to the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. PTCH has also been shown to mutate in both familial and sporadic basal cell carcinomas. However, mutations of the gene seem to be rare in squamous cell carcinomas. In order to characterize the role of the gene in the broader spectrum of sporadic skin malignant and pre-malignant lesions, we performed a polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis of genomic DNA extracted from 105 adult patients (46 females and 59 males). There were 66 patients with basal cell carcinomas, 30 with squamous cell carcinomas, 2 with malignant melanomas and 7 patients with precancerous lesions. Two tissue samples...

Moderate intensity physical training accelerates healing of full-thickness wounds in mice BJMBR
Zogaib,F.G.; Monte-Alto-Costa,A..
Physical training influences the cells and mediators involved in skin wound healing. The objective of this study was to determine the changes induced by different intensities of physical training in mouse skin wound healing. Ninety male C57BL6 mice (8 weeks old, 20-25 g) were randomized into three physical training groups: moderate (70% VO2max), high (80% VO2max), and strenuous intensity (90% VO2max). Animals trained on a motorized treadmill for 8 weeks (Elesion: physical training until the day of excisional lesion, N = 10) or 10 weeks (Eeuthan: physical training for 2 additional weeks after excisional lesion until euthanasia, N = 10), five times/week, for 45 min. Control groups (CG) trained on the treadmill three times/week only for 5 min (N = 10). In the...

Assessment of an anti-ageing structured cosmetic formulation containing goji berry BJPS
Leite,Fernanda de Godoy; Oshiro Júnior,João Augusto; Chiavacci,Leila Aparecida; Chiari-Andréo,Bruna Galdorfini.
Based on previous studies, it has been found that goji berry (GB), popularly known as a ‘miracle fruit’, has excellent antioxidant potential and can be used in the treatment of skin disorders associated with ageing. This study aimed to incorporate GB into a structured cosmetic in order to optimise its penetration. Stability studies of the formulation, determination of the antioxidant activity of the extract and of the formulation, rheological measurements, SAXS, polarised light microscopy and bioadhesion analyses were performed. The results indicated the antioxidant activity of the extract, which can be incorporated into an emulsified cosmetic formulation. The emulsified formulation containing the extract remained stable, even after being submitted to...

Mahmood,Tariq; Akhtar,Naveed; Khan,Barkat Ali; Rasul,Akhtar; Khan,Haji M. Shoaib.
Complex multiple emulsions have an excellent ability to fill large volumes of functional cosmetic agents. This study was aimed to encapsulate large volume of green tea in classical multiple emulsion and to compare its stability with a multiple emulsion without green tea extract. Multiple emulsions were developed using Cetyl dimethicone copolyol as lipophilic emulsifier and classic polysorbate-80 as hydrophilic emulsifier. Multiple emulsions were evaluated for various physicochemical aspects like conductivity, pH, microscopic analysis, rheology and these characteristics were followed for a period of 30 days in different storage conditions. In vitro and in vivo skin protection tests were also performed for both kinds of multiple emulsions i.e. with active...
