Predictive factors of subjective sleep quality and insomnia complaint in patients with stroke: implications for clinical practice Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROCHA,PATRÍCIA C. DA; BARROSO,MARINA T.M.; DANTAS,ANA AMÁLIA T.S.G.; MELO,LUCIANA P.; CAMPOS,TANIA F..
The complaints regarding sleep problems have not been well identified after a stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors of sleep quality and insomnia complaints in patients with stroke. A total of 70 subjects, 40 patients (57 ± 7 years) and 30 healthy controls (52 ± 6 years) assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Sleep Habits Questionnaire took part in the study. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test, the Student's t-test and logistic regression analysis. On average, the patients showed poor sleep quality (patients: 6.3 ± 3.5; controls: 3.9 ± 2.2; p= 0.002) and insomnia complaint was the most prevalent (patients: 37.5%; controls: 6.7%; p= 0.007). The absence of insomnia complaint (OR= 0.120;...

Sleep disorder or simple sleep ontogeny? Tendency for morningness is associated with worse sleep quality in the elderly BJMBR
Barbosa,A.A.; Miguel,M.A.L.; Tufik,S.; Sabino,F.C.; Cendoroglo,M.S.; Pedrazzoli,M..
The objective of this study was to evaluate the alterations in sleep and circadian parameters during the aging process. The study sample comprises volunteers older than 18 up to 90 years of age that answered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Horne and Östberg circadian preference questionnaire. We observed that the shift to morningness with increasing age is associated with a significant worsening in sleep quality. We discuss that this sleep profile characterized by morningness and worse sleep quality observed in elderly, when compared to younger people, reflects not necessarily a pathological state, but an expected profile for this age group.

Sleep-wake pattern of medical students: early versus late class starting time BJMBR
Lima,P.F.; Medeiros,A.L.D.; Araujo,J.F..
The sleep-wake cycle of students is characterized by delayed onset, partial sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality. Like other circadian rhythms, the sleep-wake cycle is influenced by endogenous and environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of different class starting times on the sleep-wake pattern of 27 medical students. The data were collected during two medical school semesters having different class starting times. All subjects answered the Portuguese version of the Horne and Östberg Morningness/Eveningness Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and kept a sleep diary for two weeks during each semester. Better sleep quality (PSQI = 5.3 vs 3.4), delayed sleep onset (23:59 vs 0:54 h) and longer...

Sleep quality and OPRM1 polymorphisms: a cross-sectional study among opioid-naive individuals BJPS
Zahari,Zalina; Ibrahim,Muslih Abdulkarim; Musa,Nurfadhlina; Tan,Soo Choon; Mohamad,Nasir; Ismail,Rusli.
ABSTRACT Opioidergic system involves in regulation of sleep and wakefulness. It is possible, therefore, that genetic polymorphisms in OPRM1 influence sleep quality. This study investigated the association of OPRM1 polymorphisms with subjective sleep quality among opioid-naive individuals. This cross-sectional observational study involved 161 opioid-naive males (mean age = 27.74 years; range: 18−63 years). Subjective sleep quality was assessed with the translated and validated Malay version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). DNA was extracted from whole blood and subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-genotyping for two OPRM1 polymorphisms (118A>G and IVS2+691G>C). Subjects with combined 118A and IVS2+691G alleles (AC haplotype) had...
