Hydrothermal multivariable approach: Full-scale feasibility study Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pérez-Elvira,Sara I; Fernández-Polanco,Fernando; Fernández-Polanco,María; Rodríguez,Pilar; Rouge,Philippe.
A process configuration combining thermal hydrolysis (TH) and anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge has been studied with the objective of analysing the feasibility of the technology for full scale installations. The study has been performed through pilot scale experiments and energy integration considerations, and a scheme of the most profitable option is presented: thermal hydrolysis unit fed with 7% total solids (TS) secondary sludge, anaerobic digestion of the hydrolysed sludge together with fresh primary sludge, and a cogeneration unit to produce green electricity and provide hot steam for the thermal hydrolysis process. From a technical and practical point of view, the process scheme proposed is considered to be feasible. Based on the results of the...

Macromolecular composition and anaerobic degradation of the sludge produced in a sequencing batch reactor Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Chelme,Susana; Fonseca,Pamela; Mercado,Rodrigo; Alarcon,Nelson; Sánchez,Omar.
The effect of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operating conditions on sludge macromolecular composition and the effect of sludge macromolecular composition on the anaerobic degradation of the sludge produced in SBR was investigated in this work. A SBR, fed with synthetic wastewater, was operated at different air flow rates. The resulting sludge was analyzed in terms of protein, carbohydrate, phospholipid and polyhydroxybutyrate concentrations. Methane production during anaerobic digestion of the sludge was also measured. Ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand (COD) track studies in the SBR were carried out in order to relate SBR performance and sludge macromolecular composition. The lowest air flow rate at which the SBR was...

TREATMENT OF SEPTIC TANK SLUDGE IN A VERTICAL FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEM REA
Andrade,Cynthia F.; Sperling,Marcos Von; Manjate,Elias S..
ABSTRACT: The study consisted of the evaluation of the treatment of septic tank sludge in a vertical constructed wetland system (CW), built according to the first stage of the French system. The system operated also for sewage treatment and one of the beds (area of 29.1 m2, height of the support medium of 0.7 m and planted with Tifton 85 grass, Cynodon dactylon Pers), began to receive the application of sludge from clean-pit trucks once a week. The percolated liquid was directed to post-treatment in the other two beds of the French system. The application of the raw sludge had average hydraulic loading rate of 13.1 m3/m2.year and solids loading rate of 81 kgTS/m2.year. The system improved the quality of percolated liquid in terms of carbonaceous and...

Sugarcane grown in an oxisol amended with sewage sludge and vinasse: nitrogen contents in soil and plant Scientia Agricola
Franco,Ademir; Marques,Marcos Omir; Melo,Wanderley José de.
Sewage sludge is a residue from waste water treatment plants and vinasse is a main effluent from alcohol distilleries. The main differences between them are observed in the nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) contents. Sewage sludge is poor in K, and the vinasse in N. This research was carried out to evaluate sewage sludge and vinasse effects on the nitrogen contents of the plant-soil system and the effects of their application on planted-cane and 1st. ratoon-cane under field conditions, on a Typic Haplustox, in Pontal, State of São Paulo, Brazil, using the sugarcane cultivar SP81-3250. A randomized blocks experimental design was used with 13 treatments and three replications. The results were organized in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial scheme (three residue forms, two...
