Product quality is an element of sustainable development for fisheries because it guarantees the safety and quality of landings, as well as optimal uptake. Where FADs fishing is concerned, open boats used for the capture of large pelagic fish are not big enough to be equipped with sufficient (regulatory) catch preservation equipment. In collaboration with boats at sea, this study has made it possible to monitor landings and fish flesh analysis and to review fishing practices and their subsequent impact on the quality of FADs fishing products. Several post-capture treatment protocols have been implemented by fishermen based on their professional knowledge, the size of the catch or the facilities at their disposal on the boats. Observations at sea have... |

Fisheries co-management has two agendas associated with it that sometimes work together and sometimes contend. The first agenda is to make fisheries management more rational, meaning making it better able to achieve its objectives. The second agenda is to make fisheries management more equitable by giving those people who have the most at stake in management decisions a greater say in those decisions. The knowledge on which co-management is based plays a critical role in both of these agendas. If the knowledge needed for management, for example about the condition of a fish stock, is more realistic and easier to get, this helps management to be more rational. If the knowledge needed for management is contributed to, shared and controlled by more... |

This paper describes the nature and significance of IUU small-scale fisheries and its evolution, from subsistence activities into activities that are capable of generating significant economic exchanges. The majority of small-scale fisheries are located in the poorer, underdeveloped and developing countries. In most small scale fisheries, access to the fish resources is open, unrestricted and in most cases, unregulated. Fishing activities are hardly reported. The local fisheries administrations lack the capability and capacity to manage fisheries on a sustainable basis and monitoring, control and surveillance is virtually non-existent or extremely ineffective. The paper reviews the nature and causes of illegal fishing practices in small scale fishing... |

Background information is presented of the importance of the artisanal fisheries sector in West Africa in terms of income and employment generation, foreign exchange earning and as a major supplier of animal protein to low income urban dwellers and the rural poor. Processing methodologies of smoking, salting/drying and fermentation is still traditional although improved technologies are being introduced and gradually adopted and coupled with a few semi-industrial processors to produce a final product with preferred tastes and market preferences. West Africa artisanal fisheries could benefit considerably from increased trade to the so called "ethnic market" in Europe, USA and other developed countries. Some key trading routes have been identified for the... |

Much attention has recently been paid to the potential influence of inequality or heterogeneity on people’s ability to organize collectively, particularly with respect to management of local-level natural resources. Speaking generally about this issue makes little sense in so far as heterogeneity or inequality is obviously a multidimensional phenomenon the different facets of which may carry varying implications for collection action capacities. Important among these different facets are : income or wealth (or productive capital) inequality, inequality in access to alternative income opportunities, social stratification or differential positions in the local power structure, skill disparity, ethnic and cultural heterogeneity, and diversity in techniques... |
