On an increasingly populated planet, with decreasing biodiversity and limited new opportunities to tap unexploited natural resources, there is a clear need to adjust aspects of marine management and governance. Although sectarian management has succeeded in addressing and managing some important threats to marine ecosystems, unintended consequences are often associated with overlooking nonlinear interactions and cumulative impacts that increase the risk of surprises in social-ecological systems. In this paper, we begin to untangle science-governance-society (SGS) interdependencies in marine systems by considering how to recognize the risk of surprise in social and ecological dynamics. Equally important is drawing attention to our state of preparedness,...

Interactions between oceans and societies in 2030: challenges and issues for research ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis; David, Bernard; Lamblin, Veronique; De Menthiere, Nicolas; De Lattre-gasquet, Marie; Guigon, Antoine; Jannes-ober, Emmanuelle; Hervieu, Halvard; Potier, Francoise; Ragain, Gilles; Hoummady, Moussa.
The perception of ocean areas by policy-makers or by people, living or not on the coast, has significantly varied over centuries. Due to its vastness and complexity, the sea has been studied within distinct academic disciplines. However, the current issues related to the sea, such as climate change, marine pollution or coastal tourism, require an integrated vision of the assets and drawbacks in order to meet the challenges arising from human activities both at sea and onshore. In this study, a group of foresight officers from the French network of public research institutes decided to cross-check and compare several science approaches (biology, sociology, economics, etc) about oceans. Thus, 11 sectors of maritime activity (transportation, fisheries,...

Brazilian climate normals for 1981-2010 PAB
Diniz,Francisco de Assis; Ramos,Andrea Malheiros; Rebello,Expedito Ronald Gomes.
Abstract: In the last decades, especially since 2000, the natural vulnerability of Earth’s climate system has been a cause of great concern as to the status of global climate change due to the interference of natural and/or anthropic activities. Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (Inmet), the government body officially responsible for monitoring weather and climate in Brazil, and also a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is proud to release the new edition of the climate normals for the period of 1981-2010. The new edition aims to analyze and register the climate changes that occurred during the two decades following the previous edition of 1961-1990. For that purpose, Inmet created a working group to prepare and edit these normals, as...

Megújulási kényszerhelyzet az agrár-felsőoktatásban AgEcon
Kovacs, Janos.
A társadalom helyzete gazdasági teljesítőképességén nyugszik. Ezért olyan érdekrendszer szükséges, amely minden szinten – állami irányítás, intézmény, egyén, gazdasági, társadalmi szervezetek stb. – megkívánja a konstruktív hozzáállást.

Social Opportunities and Private Convenience of Choices at Farm Level: An Approach to the Links Between Farm Income and Sustainable GDP AgEcon
Idda, Lorenzo; Sini, Maria Paola.
This work proposes a method to identify and evaluate the links between the economic and environmental management of a farm, its income, and sustainable GDP. The approach is designed to link micro and macro economic aspects and is based on certain indicators, chosen from among those obtained from analysis of the farm accounts, suitable for representing socially desirable objectives. Three different types of farm accounts are employed. An MADM method of quantitative MCDM analysis was used to make a joint evaluation of various objective indicators in different types of farm management. The work only presents the most interesting result of the research, which was the method itself and does not include the results of a specific case study which was made. This...

Zwischen Markt und Moral - Wie wird die deutsche Land- und Ernährungswirtschaft in der Gesellschaft wahrgenommen? AgEcon
Kayser, Maike; Bohm, Justus; Spiller, Achim.

The involvement of naturalists: Introduction to the Special Feature "Applying ecology" RChHN
CAMUS,PATRICIO A.
This article firstly introduces the Special Feature "Applying Ecology", addressing the use of ecological information for dealing with conservation and environmental problems in Chile. This is part of a series of special features in Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, intended for exploring the contribution of naturalists in making sound decisions in social-environmental planning. However, the low involvement of Chilean biologists has become a factor potentially affecting the quality of environmental decisions and policies, and increasing the chance of unwanted results, which raises some open questions about ethics. In such a context, the second part of the article analyzes the issue of involvement from different perspectives, considering its causes and...
