Dung Beetles Associated with Agroecosystems of Southern Brazil: Relationship with Soil Properties Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Farias,Patrícia Menegaz de; Hernández,Malva Isabel Medina.
ABSTRACT Knowing the biodiversity of dung beetles in agricultural and livestock environments is the basis for understanding the contribution that these organisms make in nutrient cycling and ecosystem functions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the structure of copronecrophagous dung beetle communities inhabiting the main agroecosystems in southern Brazil and correlate the presence of these organisms with soil properties. From December 2012 to April 2013, samples of dung beetles were taken in the municipality of Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brazil (28° 28’ S; 48° 56’ W) in corn, bean, and sugarcane crops, and in cattle pastures. Beetles were captured in 16 sampling sites, four from each agroecosystem, following a standardized methodology: 10...

Neural network and state-space models for studying relationships among soil properties Scientia Agricola
Timm,Luís Carlos; Gomes,Daniel Takata; Barbosa,Emanuel Pimentel; Reichardt,Klaus; Souza,Manoel Dornelas de; Dynia,José Flávio.
The study of soil property relationships is of great importance in agronomy aiming for a rational management of environmental resources and an improvement of agricultural productivity. Studies of this kind are traditionally performed using static regression models, which do not take into account the involved spatial structure. This work has the objective of evaluating the relation between a time-consuming and "expensive" variable (like soil total nitrogen) and other simple, easier to measure variables (as for instance, soil organic carbon, pH, etc.). Two important classes of models (linear state-space and neural networks) are used for prediction and compared with standard uni- and multivariate regression models, used as reference. For an oat crop...

Mineralogical, chemical and electrochemical attributes of soils Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Cecília Calhau; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Dias,Adriana Cristina; Pereira,Thiago Torres Costa; Ker,João Carlos.
ABSTRACT: A set of attributes endows the soils with distinctive characteristics and astute understanding is required in order to formulate suitable strategies for soil management. The aim of this study was to physically, chemically and mineralogically characterize samples of the main soil classes in Minas Gerais, Brazil, determine the point of zero salt effect (PZSE) and the point of zero charge (PZC), and ascertain the correlation between these factors and soil attributes. The soils evaluated presented different textural classes ranging from loamy sand (Entisol) to very clayey (some Oxisols and Ultisols). The soils differed substantially in terms of fertility, presenting a range from dystrophic (low fertility, base saturation < 50 %) to eutrophic...

Orbital and laboratory spectral data to optimize soil analysis Scientia Agricola
Fiorio,Peterson Ricardo; Demattê,José Alexandre M..
Traditional soil analyses are time-consuming with high cost and environmental risks, thus the use of new technologies such as remote sensing have to be estimulated. The purpose of this work was to quantify soil attributes by laboratory and orbital sensors as a non-destructive and a non-pollutant method. The study area was in the region of Barra Bonita, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in a 473 ha bare soil area. A sampling grid was established (100 × 100 m), with a total of 474 locations and a total of 948 soil samples. Each location was georeferenced and soil samples were collected for analysis. Reflectance data for each soil sample was measured with a laboratory sensor (450 to 2,500 nm). For the same locations, reflectance data was obtained from a...

Optimum size in grid soil sampling for variable rate application in site-specific management Scientia Agricola
Nanni,Marcos Rafael; Povh,Fabrício Pinheiro; Demattê,José Alexandre Melo; Oliveira,Roney Berti de; Chicati,Marcelo Luiz; Cezar,Everson.
The importance of understanding spatial variability of soils is connected to crop management planning. This understanding makes it possible to treat soil not as a uniform, but a variable entity, and it enables site-specific management to increase production efficiency, which is the target of precision agriculture. Questions remain as the optimum soil sampling interval needed to make site-specific fertilizer recommendations in Brazil. The objectives of this study were: i) to evaluate the spatial variability of the main attributes that influence fertilization recommendations, using georeferenced soil samples arranged in grid patterns of different resolutions; ii) to compare the spatial maps generated with those obtained with the standard sampling of 1 sample...

Soil CO2 emission of sugarcane fields as affected by topography Scientia Agricola
Brito,Liziane de Figueiredo; Marques Júnior,José; Pereira,Gener Tadeu; Souza,Zigomar Menezes; La Scala Júnior,Newton.
The spatial and temporal variation of soil CO2 emission is influenced by several soil attributes related to CO2 production and its diffusion in the soil. However, few studies aiming to understand the effect of topography on the variability of CO2 emissions exist, especially for cropping areas of tropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial and temporal changes of soil CO2 emission and its relation to soil attributes in an area currently cropped with sugarcane under different relief forms and slope positions. Mean CO2 emissions in the studied period (seven months) varied between 0.23 and 0.71, 0.27 and 0.90, and 0.31 and 0.80 g m-2 h-1 of CO2 for concave (Conc), backslope (BackS) and footslope (FootS) positions, respectively....

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in soils under three phytophysiognomies of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Duarte,Lorrane Marques; Bertini,Simone Cristina Braga; Stürmer,Sidney Luiz; Lambais,Marcio Rodrigues; Azevedo,Lucas Carvalho Basilio.
ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in plant community productivity and structure, and so studying the factors that affect the diversity and structure of this fungal community is important for understanding their ecology in tropical forests. We investigated AMF spore communities and root colonization under three forest phytophysiognomies (Restinga Forest, REF; Lowland Ombrophilous Dense Forest, LLF; and Montane Ombrophilous Dense Forest, MTF). Spore abundance was lowest in LLF and highest in REF, with no statistical differences relative to MTF. Spore diversity indices and root colonization rates were not statistically different among the phytophysiognomies. However, principal components analysis revealed that AMF community...

Spectral behavior of some modal soil profiles from São Paulo State, Brazil Bragantia
Demattê,José Alexandre Melo; Terra,Fabrício da Silva; Quartaroli,Carlos Fernando.
Remote sensing has a high potential for environmental evaluation. However, a necessity exists for a better understanding of the relations between the soil attributes and spectral data. The objective of this work was to analyze the spectral behavior of some soil profiles from the region of Piracicaba, São Paulo State, using a laboratory spectroradiometer (400 to 2500 nm). The relations between the reflected electromagnetic energy and the soil physical, chemical and mineralogical attributes were analyzed, verifying the spectral variations of soil samples in depth along the profiles with their classification and discrimination. Sandy soil reflected more, presenting a spectral curve with an ascendant form, opposite to clayey soils. The 1900 nm band...
