A new termite species of the genus Dihoplotermes Araújo (Blattaria, Isoptera, Termitidae) from the Brazilian Amazonian rainforest Acta Amazonica
AZEVEDO,Renato Almeida de; DAMBROS,Cristian de Sales; MORAIS,José Wellington de.
ABSTRACT Dihoplotermes, a previously monotypic genus, is now composed of two species. Dihoplotermes taurus sp. nov., a new Termitinae termite species, is illustrated and described based on morphological characters from soldiers, workers, and imago. The new species is distinguished from Dihoplotermes inusitatus Araujo by having a spine-like protuberance with blunt apex on the postmentum, the presence of a spine on the gizzard and the absence of dimorphic soldiers. Furthermore, the internal morphological characteristics of a Dihoplotermes worker are described for the first time. Both internal and external morphological characters were used to improve the characterization of the species.

Soil macrofauna in organic and conventional coffee plantations in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Janaina Biral dos; Ramos,Alessandro Coutinho; Azevedo Júnior,Romildo; Oliveira Filho,Luís Carlos Iuñes de; Baretta,Dilmar; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Abstract: Brazil has always been one of the most important coffee producing countries. Lately, there has equally been a renewed interest in alternative coffee production systems. The state of Espírito Santo is the second greatest coffee producer in Brazil; so, we used local coffee plantations to evaluate the relations between soil macrofauna and chemical and microbiological soil properties to identify which of these properties discriminate more effectively between the organic management system (OS) and the conventional management system (CS) of coffee plantations. For each of these two cultivation systems we chose three coffee farms who employed both cultivation systems and picked out the most similar fields from each property. At each site, first we...

Effects of pig slurry application on the diversity and activity of soil biota in pasture areas Ciência Rural
Silva,Danni Maisa da; Jacques,Rodrigo Josemar Seminoti; Silva,Diego Armando Amaro da; Santana,Natielo Almeida; Vogelmann,Eduardo; Eckhardt,Daniel Pazzini; Antoniolli,Zaida Inês.
ABSTRACT: The successive application of pig slurry to pastures is a common practice in southern Brazil, serving as a method of waste disposal as well as an important alternative to chemical fertilization. Although there are economic benefits to the use of manure as fertilizer, it may be associated with environmental hazards and cause changes to composition and activity of soil fauna. This study aimed to study the effects of pig slurry on the soil biota of pastures. Composition and biological activity of pastures where manure was applied successively for 2 years (A2) and 14 years (A14) were evaluated, and native forest (NF) was analyzed as a reference area. Successive application of pig slurry to the soil changed its biological characteristics according to...

Effect of castor cake and elephant grass composting on edaphic fauna Ciência Rural
Scoriza,Rafael Nogueira; Bianchi,Miriam de Oliveira; Correia,Maria Elizabeth Fernandes; Leal,Marco Antonio de Almeida.
ABSTRACT: Elephant grass and castor cake when combined can make a promising organic fertilizer. However, castor cake contains potentially toxic chemicals, such as ricin and ricinine. To test potential effects of these chemicals, compost piles of elephant grass ( Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) with castor cake were prepared with different C:N ratios (T1 = 40, T2 = 30, T3 = 20; T4 = 30 [control, elephant grass + crotalaria]) to evaluate colonization by edaphic fauna and any suppressive effects of castor cake. Soil organisms were collected with Berlese-Tullgren funnels. There were temporal differences between the treatments, and the epigeous fauna was mainly represented by members of the Acari and Entomobryomorpha. Elapsed time is the major factor in...

SOIL MESO- AND MACROFAUNA IN TWO SOYBEAN CROPS AFTER SWINE WASTEWATER APPLICATION REA
Maciel,Ana P. C.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Remor,Marcelo B.; Rosa,Danielle M.; Reis,Ralpho R. Dos.
ABSTRACT Hog raising generates a large amount of residues that is commonly discarded into the soil as fertilizer even with environmental risks. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the application effects of different doses of swine wastewater (SW) associated with mineral fertilization on the abundance and diversity of organisms of soil meso- and macrofauna in two soybean crops. Treatments consisted of four doses (0, 100, 200, and 300 m3 ha−1) of SW with or without mineral fertilization in two soybean crop, totaling 24 experimental units. Soil meso- and macrofauna were sampled using pitfall traps installed at each plot. Samples were sorted and the organisms were separated and identified. The highest abundances were found between groups of...

Terrestrial isopod diversity in the subtropical neotropics: Itapuã State Park, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Almerão,Maurício P.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S.; Quadros,Aline F.; Pedó,Ezequiel; Silva,Luiz G. R.; Araujo,Paula Beatriz.
We analysed species abundance and composition during one year of sampling at Itapuã State Park, a conservation unit in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Samples were collected monthly from May 2003 to April 2004 along a 4 km forest trail divided in three transects along the slopes of a small hill. Terrestrial isopods were hand searched by three people for 40 minutes at two sampling sites along each transect, summing 240 minutes of sampling effort per transect per month. Six species distributed in six families were found. The collector curve stabilised when half the samples were taken, demonstrating sampling sufficiency: analytical estimates did not predict more species to be found in the trail.

Soil termites in primary forest, secondary forest and an agroforestry plantation system in central Amazonia. Infoteca-e
MARTIUS, C.; GOMES, E.; GARCIA, M. V. B..
Litter and soil termites were collected with soil cores (21cm diameter) in a primary forest site, a secondary forest site and two sites of a polyculture plantation system in central Amazonia (Brazil), in three-monthly intervals from 1997 to 1999. Termite genus diversity, abundance and biomass all were highest in the primary forest. The values in the secondary forest were half those of the primary forest, and they were lowest in the plantation systems, indicating that the latter sites may suffer from functional constraints concerning the process of organic residue decomposition.

SHIFT PROJECT ENV 52..
The first months of the year were dedicated to preparatory work in Germany and in Brazil. In July we finished the unexpectedly time-and cost-intensive installation of a generator and no break system to maintain the functioning of extraction and analyzing equipment (Kempson and Berlese-extractor, C/N-analyzer and Infra-Red-Gasanalyzer IRGA) during the very frequent breakdowns of the power supply in the laboratory of the EMBRAPA institute. On 23/24 July the joint "central sampling program of macro-and mesofauna, oligochaeta and microflora which includes field and laboratory work was successfully tested. On 27 october the first litterbag series with 1008 litterbags containing air-dried Vismia-litter to evaluate site-specific decomposition rates was...
