Origin of microaggregates in soils with ferralic horizons Scientia Agricola
Cooper,Miguel; Vidal-Torrado,Pablo; Chaplot,Vincent.
Microaggregates that characterize ferralic soils have been hypothesized to have physical, geochemical and/or biological origins. Despite of many studies, the hierarchy between these processes that form microaggregates has seldom been reported. The objective of this work was to study the genesis of microaggregates in a sequence of Ferralic Nitisols developed on Quaternary red clayey sediments and diabase in Piracicaba (SP), Brazil. This issue was tackled by combining optical microscopy, image analysis, scanning electron microscopy and elemental iron quantifications by X-ray fluorescence. Micromorphological investigations showed three different types of microaggregates: (i) oval microaggregates with well sorted quartz grains in their interior; (ii) oval...

Geochemical signatures and weathering rates in soils derived from different granites in contrasting climatic locations Agronomy
Silva, Ygor Jacques Agra Bezerra da; Nascimento, Clístenes Williams Araújo do; Biondi, Caroline Miranda; van Straaten, Peter; Souza Júnior, Valdomiro Severino de; Ferreira, Tiago Osório.
We studied the mineralogical properties and chemical composition of different granites using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy coupled with scanning electron microscopy to understand the relationship between granite signatures and soil characteristics, including weathering patterns and soil fertility status. The discriminant analysis (DA) was based on soil physical and chemical properties and was used to differentiate soils developed from I- and S-type granites across contrasting climatic conditions in northeast Brazil. The DA identified the highest values of organic carbon, clay and plant nutrients as key variables to recognize soil profiles derived from I-type granites. In contrast, the greater sand contents and Al saturation distinguished soils...

Depth distribution of exchangeable aluminum in acid soils: A study from subtropical Brazil Agronomy
Rabel, Diego Oliveira; Motta, Antonio Carlos Vargas; Barbosa, Julierme Zimmer; Melo, Vander Freitas; Prior, Stephen Arthur.
Due to potential crop toxicity, high aluminum (Al) availability requires increased attention when preparing agricultural soils. However, research examining the relationship between depth distribution of Al and soil weathering has received little priority in Brazil, particularly regarding the number of soil profiles investigated. This study analyzed 38 acid soils selected from Soil Surveys in southern Brazil to identify and isolate the effects of organic and mineral components on depth distribution of exchangeable Al extracted with KCl (AlKCl). These soil profiles were divided into the following three groups based on AlKCl depth distribution: Group I – decrease with depth; Group II – little variation with depth; and Group III – increase with depth. High...

Pedogenesis and characteristics of the terra rossas developed on different physiographic position and their classification Agrociencia
Aydinalp,Cumhur; FitzPatrick,Ewart Adsil.
Terra Rossas occur in the eastern part of the Bursa plain, Turkey. The region is covered by large forests growing on Terra Rossa soils. This area has ecological importance for these forests. The purpose of this study was to characterize five Terra Rossa profiles and to relate their properties to the pedogenic processes responsible for their formation under these important forests. Five soil profiles were selected on five different elevations ranging between 200 to 350 m under natural vegetation. Soils are dominated by the influence of climate and lithology. A special classification problem has occurred for two out of five profiles (World Reference Base for Soil Resources). These soils did not meet the clay increase requested by the WRB (2006)...

Xanthic- and Rhodic-Acrudoxes under cerrado vegetation: differential internal drainage and covarying micromorphological properties Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Skorupa,Alba Lucia Araujo; Tassinari,Diego; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Zinn,Yuri Lopes; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Soil internal drainage plays a major role in soil genesis, and it is mostly dependent on topography. However, the existence of sedimentary and meta-sedimentary rock strata with variable dip angle allows for strong differences in internal drainage for identical topographies, which result in a marked differentiation in the properties of overlain soils. This work aimed to investigate the micromorphology of soils formed from different dip angles of rock strata and their relationships to internal drainage, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Over horizontal strata, a Xanthic Acrudox lacking hematite and with blocky structure has developed. Over strata with 45° dip angle, strong drainage has resulted in intense desilication, forming a Rhodic Acrudox having...
