Eindringwiderstand ökologisch bewirtschafteter Ackerböden - Einfluss von Standort und Bewirtschaftung sowie Auswirkungen auf den Ertrag von Wintergetreide Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Harald; Bruns, Christian; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter.

Organic Eprints
Apostolov, Stoylko; Kirov, P.; Tihov, N..

Arthropod food webs in organic and conventional wheat farming systems of an agricultural long-term experiment: a stable isotope approach Organic Eprints
Birkhofer, K.; Fließbach, A.; Wise, D.H.; Scheu, S..
1 Agricultural intensification not only alters the structure of arthropod communities, but also may affect biotic interactions by altering the availability of basal resources. We analyzed variations in stable isotope ratios (15N/14N and 13C/12C) of fertilizers, plants, prey and generalist predators in organic and conventional farming systems in a long-term agricultural experiment [DOK trial (bioDynamic, bioOrganic, Konventionell)]. Two basal resources with pronounced differences in carbon isotope signatures, wheat litter (C3 plant) and maize litter (C4 plant), were used to uncover differences in food web properties between the two farming systems (conventional versus organic). 2 Predators incorporated significantly higher proportions of carbon from wheat...

N use efficiencies and N2O emissions in two contrasting, biochar amended soils under winter wheat-cover crop-sorghum rotation Organic Eprints
Hüppi, Roman; Neftel, Albrecht; Lehmann, Moritz F.; Krauss, Maike; Six, Johan; Leifeld, Jens.
Biochar, a carbon-rich, porous pyrolysis product of organic residues, is evaluated as an option to tackle major problems of the global food system. Applied to soil, biochar can sequester carbon and have beneficial effects on nitrogen (N) cycling, thereby enhancing crop yields and reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. There is little understanding of the underlying mechanisms, but many experiments indicated increased yields and manifold changes in N transformation, suggesting an increase in N use efficiency. Biochar's effects can be positive in extensively managed tropical agriculture, however less is known about its use in temperate soils with intensive fertilisation. We tested the effect of slow pyrolysis wood chip biochar on N use efficiency, crop...

Düngung mit Sprossmasse von Futterleguminosen: Lachgasemissionen und Nitratverluste Organic Eprints
Stumm, Christoph; Köpke, Ulrich.
High nitrous oxide emissions are reported in literature when grass-clover is mulched in stockless farming systems. In our study, we measured similar emission rates especially after intensive rainfall when shoot biomass of grass-clover is transferred to maize and celeriac as a source of plant available nitrogen. Inefficient use of nitrogen bound in this mulch may furthermore result in nitrate leaching, especially if harvest is late and bare fallow over winter unavoidable.

Einfluss von HTC-Biokohle als Bodenverbesserer auf den Wachstums- und Entwicklungsverlauf bei Sojabohnen Organic Eprints
Lehner, D.; Thalenhorst, H.; Kariger, R..
The influence of biochar with an amount of 0 to 20 t/ha on growth, yield and ingredients on soybeans of different variants was compared. Differences between the variants until blooming could be found. Plants from the HTC variant have shown significantly longer stems than others. These differences diminished until the harvest. Due to extrem low precipitation values in spring and early summer, no rhizobia could be developed and nitrogen fixation for the soybean was impossible. The plants could only use nitrogen from the soil. As a result, plots prepared with mineral fertilizer have shown the significantly longest plants, highest mass of dry matter and highest yields. Further, HTC variants have shown the lowest values in oil- and sugar contents. The highest...

Bewirtschaftungseffekte auf Wurzelbiomasse und Kohlenstoff-Rhizodeposition von Mais in zwei Schweizer Langzeitversuchen Organic Eprints
Hirte, J.; Leifeld, J.; Oberholzer, H.-R.; Mayer, J..
Below ground carbon (BGC) inputs by agricultural plants into the soil are an important variable in soil carbon (C) modelling. The sources for BGC inputs are dead root biomass and C release by living roots (C rhizodeposition). Since management effects on BGC inputs are not profoundly understood, we address the following research questions in this research project: (i) What are the proportions of root biomass and C rhizodeposition of the total BGC input in the topsoil and subsoil under maize cultivation at different sites? (ii) Does long-term fertilization practice affect total root biomass, root distribution, shoot/root ratios, and C rhizodeposition of maize? Results obtained from field experiments in 2013 on two Swiss long-term experimental sites (“DOK”...

Wurzelbürtige Stickstoff- und Kohlenstoffeinträge in den Boden: Erkenntnisse aus sieben Jahren DOK Wurzelforschung Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Hirte, Juliane; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Frossard, Emmanuel; Mäder, Paul; Hammelehle, Andreas.
We investigated nitrogen and carbon below ground inputs of soybean, clover-grass and maize and management effects of biological and conventional systems in the DOK long term experiment. We found for soybean increasing below ground C and N inputs with decreasing fertilization intensity whereas those effects were small for clover-grass. Below ground nitrogen inputs of red clover could be estimated by above ground N multiplied with a factor of 0.5.

Long-term organic matter application reduces cadmium but not zinc concentrations in wheat Organic Eprints
Grüter, Roman; Costerousse, Benjamin; Mayer, Jochen; Mäder, Paul; Thonar, Cécile; Frossard, Emmanuel; Schulin, Rainer; Tandy, Susan.
Wheat is a staple food crop and a major source of both the essential micronutrient zinc (Zn) and the toxic heavy metal cadmium (Cd) for humans. Since Zn and Cd are chemically similar, increasing Zn concentrations in wheat grains (biofortification), while preventing Cd accumulation, is an agronomic challenge. We used two Swiss agricultural long-term field trials, the “Dynamic-Organic-Conventional System Comparison Trial” (DOK) and the “Zurich Organic Fertilization Experiment” (ZOFE), to investigate the impact of long-term organic, mineral and combined fertilizer inputs on total and phytoavailable concentrations of soil Zn and Cd and their accumulation in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). “Diffusive gradients in thin films” (DGT) and...
