The soil seed bank during Atlantic Forest regeneration in Southeast Brazil BJB
BAIDER,C.; TABARELLI,M.; MANTOVANI,W..
A survey was conducted to determine the density and species composition of viable seeds buried in four stands of a tropical montane forest at Parque Estadual Intervales, Brazil. The objective was to understand: (1) how numbers and composition of the soil seed bank change as the forest regrows, and (2) how such changes affect the species available for regeneration if forests of different ages are cut down. In each forest stand (5, 18, 27-yr-old and a mature forest), 57 soil samples were collected (0-2.5 and 2.5-5 cm deep). Viable seed density of herbaceous species ranged between 11,003 seeds. m-2 (5-yr-old vegetation) and 482 (mature forest), and between 25 (5-yr-old vegetation) and 389 seeds. m-2 (mature forest) for woody plant species in the 0-5 cm soil...

Seed germination in Cerrado species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Zaidan,Lilian B. P.; Carreira,Rosana C..
The aim of this review is to comment on the available data about germination of seeds from herb, shrub and tree species of the Cerrado after the publication of the review written by Felippe and Silva in 1984. Studies on seed germination of herbaceous species focused mainly on the responses of seeds to light, different ranges of temperature and storage in the soil. The majority of seeds from herb species germinate between 20°C and 30°C, and are photoblastic. Alternate temperatures favored germination in some seeds, but changed light sensitivity of the achenes of Bidens gardneri. Seeds of most of the shrub species of Melastomataceae are positive photoblastic; among the Velloziaceae, germination in the dark was observed in some species. Other shrub species...

Glyphosate Applied at the Early Reproductive Stage Impairs Seed Production of Glyphosate-Resistant Hairy Fleabane Planta Daninha
PIASECKI,C.; MAZON,A.S.; MONGE,A.; CAVALCANTE,J.A.; AGOSTINETTO,D.; VARGAS,L..
ABSTRACT: Glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane [Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronq.] is one of the most important weeds in the world. Among the factors that make this weed species widely distributed in the most diverse environments is the high seed production capacity and dispersal. Hairy fleabane plants not controlled by herbicide application regrowth and overcome crop canopy, use environmental resources, interfere with crops, and complete their life cycle by producing thousands of seeds and replenishing the seed bank. Management strategies that reduce production and viability of hairy fleabane seeds can be adopted within the integrated management to reduce the seed bank and prevent further infestations. In this way, experiments were carried out in a greenhouse...

Glyphosate Resistance Affect the Physiological Quality of Conyza bonariensis seeds Planta Daninha
PIASECKI,C.; MAZON,A.S.; AGOSTINETTO,D.; VARGAS,L..
ABSTRACT: High seed production and dispersal capacity and glyphosate resistance are among the main factors that have made hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) one of the most important and dispersed weeds in the world. Herbicide-resistant weeds populations may have fitness cost due to molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds of Conyza spp. and determine whether glyphosate resistance causes fitness costs for resistant biotypes. Seeds from six hairy fleabane biotypes, three glyphosate-resistant and three -sensitive, with a resistance factor average of 11.7 were studied. Among the studied biotypes, five were identified as C. bonariensis and one as C. blakei. Seed analyses were performed...

Seed predation in a Mediterranean pasture: can ants modify the floristic composition of soil seed banks? RChHN
ESPIGARES,TÍSCAR; LÓPEZ-PINTOR,ANTONIO.
Ants may play an important role on vegetation dynamics, especially in arid and semiarid environments, where they can consume a high proportion of the produced seeds. Although some works have analysed the influence of seed predation by ants on the density of vegetation in Mediterranean pastures, there are no studies on the influence of ant activity upon the floristic composition of the vegetation and the soil seed banks in this kind of ecosystem. We have studied the effect of ant exclusion on the floristic composition of the vegetation and the soil seed bank in a Mediterranean pasture of central Spain. We sampled the floristic composition of the pasture during 2002 and 2003 springs and also we collected soil seed bank samples in autumn 2002. Floristic...

Weed dynamics in grain sorghum-grass intercropped systems Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Sodré Filho,Joilson; Marchão,Robélio Leandro; Carvalho,Arminda Moreira de; Carmona,Ricardo.
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of short-season sorghum-grass intercropped systems on weed population dynamics. The integrated systems consisted of sorghum grown at two row spacings (0.50 m and 0.70 m), intercropped with palisade grass or Congo grass. We also used sole crops of sorghum, palisade grass, Congo grass and a fallow to serve as a reference for spontaneous vegetation. The experiment was conducted in 2010 and 2011 at Planaltina (Federal District) in Brazil. Weed populations and weed dry matter were assessed during the short season and during the succession soybean cycle. The weed soil seed bank was sampled in both years of the study. Sorghum at a row spacing of 0.50 m intercropped with Congo grass reduced the Ageratum conyzoides...

Soil seed banks Scientia Agricola
Christoffoleti,P.J.; Caetano,R.S.X..
The goal of this literature review is to discuss some of the major aspects of the soil seed bank, from its characteristics down to methodological aspects of its determination. Soil seed bank is the reservoir of viable seeds or of vegetative propagules that are present in the soil and that are able to recompose a natural vegetation. In the agroecossystems the soil seed bank is related to weeds, and the knowledge of its size and composition in terms of species can be used in the prediction of future infestations, to built simulation models of population establishment through time and also the definition of soil and cultural management programs, in order to have a rational use of herbicides.
