ABSTRACT: Despite of all modem communications tools, difficulties of dialogue still exist between technicians and local community members when dealing with natural resources. This is related to many factors, from the predominantly technical formation of the teachers and researches to the difficult of local population members to be understood about their relationship with the surrounding environment. In the case of Soil Science, this problem also occurs. Proposals for planning soil sustainable usage, usually, are compromised because the do not consider the local knowledge, especially in rural communities, where there is no basic material compatible to the work scale needed. The approach of observing the environment and how humans interact with it, from the... |

The aim of this study was to elucidate the soil forming processes of representative vineyard soils, and to discuss the implications on a soil-based viticultural zoning at very detailed scale. The study area is located in Priorat, Penedes and Conca de Barbera viticultural areas (Catalonia, North-eastern Spain). The studied soils belong to representative soil map units determined at 1:5,000 scale, according to Soil Taxonomy classification. The soil forming processes, identified through morphological and micromorphological analyses, have significant effects on some soil properties. For example, the different processes of clay accumulation in soils developed from granodiorites in Priorat or gravel deposits in Conca de Barbera, are primarily responsible for... |

ABSTRACT The use of new technologies, the development of new software, and the advances in the machines ability to process data have brought a new perspective to soil science and especially to pedology, with the advent of digital soil mapping (DSM). To meet the demand for soil surveys in Brazil, it will be necessary to popularize the techniques used in DSM. To identify and map the soil to generate maps of land use capability, we proposed a theoretical and practical course focused on the training in DSM for professionals involved in the management of land resources. The methodology was divided into five modules: I. Introduction to pedology, soil-landscape relationship, soil survey and soil classification (theory); II. Identification of soils in the field... |

ABSTRACT Digital soil mapping (DSM) has been increasingly used to provide quick and accurate spatial information to support decision-makers in agricultural and environmental planning programs. In this study, we used a DSM approach to map soils in western Haiti and compare the performance of the Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) with Random Forest (RF) to classify the soils. The study area of 4,300 km2 is mostly composed of diverse limestone rocks, alluvial deposits, and, to a lesser extent, basalt. A soil survey was conducted whereby soils were described and classified at 258 sites. Soil samples were collected and subjected to physical and chemical analyses. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) was used to select the most important covariates from... |

ABSTRACT: Planning sustainable use of land resources requires reliable information about spatial distribution of soil physical and chemical properties related to environmental processes and ecosystemic functions. In this context, cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a fundamental soil quality indicator; however, it takes money and time to obtain this data. Although many studies have been conducted to spatially quantify soil properties on various scales and in different environments, not much is known about interactions between soil properties and environmental covariates in the Brazilian semiarid region. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of random forest and cokriging models applied to predict CEC in the Brazilian semiarid region. The... |

Soil components, such as organic matter, the levels and form of iron oxides, moisture and texture, influence the interaction of the soil with electromagnetic energy, so that knowledge of the energy reflected by different classes of soil is therefore of help in their discrimination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of differentiating classes of soils along two transects, by means of the field spectral behaviour of different classes, using both visual and multivariate statistical analysis. Equidistant points were marked along the transects, 100 m apart, where geo-referenced soil samples were collected from the surface layer at a depth of 0 to 0.20 m. In the area under study, ten classes of soil were described by means of laboratory... |

Soil surveys are necessary sources of information for land use planning, but they are not always available. This study proposes the use of multiple logistic regressions on the prediction of occurrence of soil types based on reference areas. From a digitalized soil map and terrain parameters derived from the digital elevation model in ArcView environment, several sets of multiple logistic regressions were defined using statistical software Minitab, establishing relationship between explanatory terrain variables and soil types, using either the original legend or a simplified legend, and using or not stratification of the study area by drainage classes. Terrain parameters, such as elevation, distance to stream, flow accumulation, and topographic wetness... |

Survey and classification of highland rice cultivation areas to indicate acid soil crisis was conducted on altitude 700 meters above sea level. Soil sampling was conducted form 7 districts of Mae Hong Son province are namely Muang, Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi, Mae Sariang, Sop Muey, Pai and Pang Ma Pha in the year 2012-2013. A total of 115 soil samples were consisting of 68 paddies and 47 upland conditions. Soil samples were analysis to find out the soil pH. The result showed that the strongly acid, moderately acid and slightly acid are 39.13, 21.74 and 20.86 percentages, respectively. In other hand, the natural, very strongly acid and extremely acid are 8.7, 7.83 and 1.7 percentages, respectively. However 39 percent of upland soil sample and 38 percent of paddy... |
