| In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pyrogenic carbon (biochar) has properties that enable it to replace fresh organic matter (cattle manure) in seedling substrates. These properties include specific electrophysiological interactions in soil-plant media, stability and longevity. The experiment was conducted in the nursery at the State University of Mato Grosso, located in the municipality of Nova Xavantina, between April and June 2011. | Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas no desenvolvimento ninfal de Myzus persicae sobre folhas de berinjela (Solanum melongena). O experimento foi desenvolvido em câmaras climatizadas, sob condições controladas de temperatura de 15, 20, 25 e 30 ± 1 ºC, umidade relativa do ar de 70% ± 10% e fotofase de 12 horas. A biologia de M. persicae foi acompanhada sobre discos foliares de berinjela (3 cm de diâmetro) mantidos em placas de Petri contendo solução ágar-água a 1% geleificada. | The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of total rainfall, mean temperature, natural enemies, chemical composition of leaves, levels of nitrogen and potassium on leaves and density of leaf trichomes on attack intensity of Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Homoptera: Aphididae) on plantations of the eggplant (Solanum melongena) in two regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil. | Eggplant seeds germination can be slow and uneven, justifying the use of pre-germinative treatments to improve the performance of seed lots. One option of treatment is the controlled hydration of seeds by priming. In this way, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of eggplant seeds cv. Embu submitted to different methodologies of priming. The seeds used in the experiment were stored in cold chamber (15º C and 55% RH) in paper bags. | O híbrido de berinjela 'Ciça', lançado em 1991, com resistência à antracnose e à podridão-de-fomopsis, tem tido uma boa aceitação na região Centro-Oeste. Até 1995, no entanto, o híbrido não havia sido avaliado pela Embrapa Hortaliças em outras regiões do Brasil. Para esta avaliação, foram distribuídas 82 amostras de sementes, acompanhadas da descrição do híbrido e de uma ficha de avaliação, a pesquisadores, extensionistas e produtores das regiões Sul, Sudeste, Centro-oeste, Nordeste e Norte do Brasil, assim como da Argentina, Paraguai e Costa Rica. | ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic divergence among eggplant genotypes for agronomic traits in order to gather information for the selection of genotypes in eggplant breeding programs for tolerance to high temperatures. | O desempenho agronômico da berinjeleira foi avaliado em cultivo agroecológico, comparando-se espécies de gramínea e leguminosa perenes para cobertura viva do solo. O experimento foi conduzido no município de Seropédica-RJ, no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com parcelas subdivididas e três repetições. | Baixas temperaturas por ocasião do plantio podem atrasar ou inibir a germinação das sementes de várias espécies de hortaliças, incluindo berinjela, melancia, melão e tomate. O condicionamento osmótico de sementes tem sido utilizado com o objetivo de acelerar a germinação e uniformizar a emergência das plântulas em campo, especialmente em condições adversas. The eggplants were sanitized, processed and packed in nylon + transparent polyethylene.
