Prediction of total solar irradiance on tilted greenhouse surfaces CIGR Journal
Ronoh, Erick K..
Solar radiation is the driving force for the surface energy balance in buildings such as greenhouses.  The greenhouses are generally tilted towards the sun in order to maximize the solar irradiance on the surfaces.  Precise computation of the solar radiation received on these surfaces assumes an important role in the energy simulation.  It is practical to calculate the total solar irradiance on the tilted surfaces based on the solar global and diffuse radiation intensities on horizontal surfaces.  In this work, a south-facing thermal box inclined at 26.5° from the horizontal was used for solar radiation measurements.  Additionally, the recorded solar radiation data were retrieved for the study location and used to develop an empirical correlation.  The...

Microclimate alterations caused by agricultural hail net coverage and effects on apple tree yield in subtropical climate of Southern Brazil Bragantia
Bosco,Leosane Cristina; Bergamaschi,Homero; Cardoso,Loana Silveira; Paula,Viviane Aires de; Marodin,Gilmar Arduino Bettio; Brauner,Pedro Correa.
ABSTRACT The use of hail net coverage on plants is an effective measure to mitigate damage caused by hailstorms. In southern Brazil, areas with apple orchards under hail net coverage have increased in recent years. However, little is known about the possible effects on the microclimate and, consequently, on plant growth, crop yield and fruit quality. The hypothesis of this study was that hail net promotes microclimate and yield changes in apple orchards. The objective was to characterize the microclimate and production of apple trees cultivated under hail nets and to consequently generate numeric parameters that can be used in the management of apple orchards and in crop modeling. The study was conducted in commercial orchards growing under hail net and...

Influence of light intensity on growth and physiological characteristics of common sage (Salvia officinalis L.) BABT
Zervoudakis,George; Salahas,George; Kaspiris,George; Konstantopoulou,Eleni.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of four different light intensities on the growth characteristics, physiological parameters and leaf photosynthetic pigments of Salvia officinalis L. The plant's dry mass, number of the leaves and physiological parameters indicated a strong positive correlation with the light intensity. On the other hand, the plant's height and leaf photosynthetic pigments were increased at low light treated plants. These results suggest that the aromatic herb Salvia officinalis L. is adaptable to different light environments.

Estimating Monthly Solar Radiation in South-Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Álvarez,José; Mitasova,Helena; Allen,H. Lee.
Solar radiation is a key component in process-based models. The amount of this energy depends on the location, time of the year, and atmospheric conditions. Several equations and models have been developed for different conditions using historical data from weather station networks or satellite measurements. However, solar radiation estimates are too local since they rely on weather stations or have a resolution that is too coarse when working with satellites. In this study, we estimated monthly global solar radiation for the south-central region of Chile using the r.sun model and validated it with observations from automatic weather stations. We analyzed the performance of global radiation results with the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) and Bristow-Campbell (BC)...

Confalone,Adriana Elisabet; Bernardes,Marcos Silveira; Costa,Luiz Claudio; Righi,Ciro Abbud; Dourado Neto,Durval; Martin,Thomas Newton; Manfron,Paulo Augusto; Pereira,Carlos Rodrigues.
Predicting crop growth and yield with precision are one of the main concerns of the agricultural science. For these purpose mechanistic models of crop growth have been developed and tested worldwide. The feasibility of an expolinear model for crop growth was evaluated on predicting growth modification on soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) of determined and undetermined growth cultivars, submitted to water restrictions imposed on different phenological stages. An experiment was carried out in Azul/Argentina and in Viçosa/Brazil during the growing seasons (1997/1998, 1998/1999 and 2002/2003). The expolinear model was adjusted to the dry-matter data obtained from each treatment. The model showed sensibility of Rm (maximum relative growth rate of the culture - g...
