Scenarios for Resilient Shrimp Aquaculture in Tropical Coastal Areas Ecology and Society
Bush, Simon R.; Wageningen University; simon.bush@wur.nl; van Zwieten, Paul A.M.; Wageningen University; paul.vanzwieten@wur.nl; Visser, Leontine; Wageningen University; leontine.visser@wur.nl; van Dijk, Han; Wageningen University; han.vandijk@wur.nl; Bosma, Roel; Wageningen University; roel.bosma@wur.nl; de Boer, Willem F.; Wageningen University; Fred.deBoer@wur.nl; Verdegem, Marc; Wageningen University; marc.verdegem@wur.nl.
We contend there are currently two competing scenarios for the sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture in coastal areas of Southeast Asia. First, a landscape approach, where farming techniques for small-scale producers are integrated into intertidal areas in a way that the ecological functions of mangroves are maintained and shrimp farming diseases are controlled. Second, a closed system approach, where problems of disease and effluent are eliminated in closed recirculation ponds behind the intertidal zone controlled by industrial-scale producers. We use these scenarios as two ends of a spectrum of possible interactions at a range of scales between the ecological, social, and political dynamics that underlie the threat to the resilience of mangrove...

Histoire des traits de vie du Tilapia du Nil (Oreochromis niloticus – Cichlidae), espèce exploitée d’un réservoir subtropical (Laos). ArchiMer
Tessier, Anne; Blin, Charlotte; Cottet, Maud; Kue, Kaoboun; Panfili, Jacques; Chanudet, Vincent; Descloux, Stephane; Guillard, Jean.
Biological traits of Oreochromis niloticus were studied in order to identify potential differences between the population of the Nam Theun 2 Reservoir and other populations in Asia and in Africa. The study also aimed to characterize the demographic structure of the exploited population by fisheries in the reservoir. Toluidine-stained transverse section of otoliths from 322 specimens, collected between November 2015 and January 2017, were analysed to identify the periodicity of annulus formation and to age individuals. Length, weight, sex and sexual maturity stage were recorded. Life history traits were characterized by length-weight and length age relationships. The periodicity of annulus formation was annual, with complete formation of the translucent...

A new species of Maesa (Primulaceae-Maesoideae) from New Guinea Naturalis
Utteridge, T.M.A..
A new species of Maesa (Primulaceae-Maesoideae) is described from Indonesian New Guinea. Maesa megistophylla is unique in the genus in the combination of the very long elliptic leaves, and racemes with subsessile flowers. The species is illustrated, taxonomic affinities are discussed, and is assessed as Data Deficient according to the criteria of IUCN.

Rutelarcha, Lutera and Cyphelytra: notes on taxonomy and Nomenclature, Diagnoses, and keys (Coleoptera: Rutelinae, Rutelini) Naturalis
Kuijten, P.J..
Rutelarcha, Lutera and Cyphelytra are restated as genera, in the subtribus Rutelina; Arrow (1917) considered them synonyms of Parastasia, in the Parastasiina. Machatschke's (1972) new name Parastasia pauliana for Parastasia nigromaculata (Ohaus) (= Lutera) therefore is superfluous, and merged into synonymy. Lectotypes are designated for Cyphelytra ochracea and Rutelarcha quadrimaculata. The genera and species are diagnosed in a table, keys and descriptions, and some diagnostic characters are figured.

A new species of Alphonsea (Annonaceae) from Peninsular Malaysia Naturalis
Turner, I.M.; Utteridge, T.M.A..
Alphonsea rugosa sp. nov. is described from eastern Peninsular Malaysia. It is similar to Alphonsea elliptica but has fruits that are dry wrinkled and glabrous rather than smooth and tomentose. A conservation assessment of Vulnerable based on collections from four locations is made.

On Protecting Farmers’ New Varieties: New Approaches to Rights on Collective Innovations in Plant Genetic Resources AgEcon
Salazar, Rene; Louwaars, Niels P.; Visser, Bert.
Current farmers’ breeding goes beyond the gradual selection in landraces, and includes development and maintenance of major new farmers’ varieties that are rather uniform, in particular in South-East Asia. Modern varieties developed in the formal sector have simply replaced landraces as the source of diversity, but have not abolished farmers’ breeding practices. Interpretations of the new international agreements on plant genetic resources should protect the development of modern farmers’ varieties. However, ensuring recognition of collective innovation, allowing access to relevant germplasm sources for farmers’ breeding activities, keeping materials freely available, and arranging for effective benefit sharing, all form major challenges. This paper...

Changing Consumer Buying Habits in Developing Countries: A Disaggregate Demand Analysis for Fruits and Vegetables in Vietnam AgEcon
Mergenthaler, Marcus; Qaim, Matin; Weinberger, Katinka.
Food systems in developing countries are currently undergoing a rapid transformation, with important implications for local farmers, wholesalers, and retailers. While supply side aspects of this transformation have been analyzed previously, issues of consumer demand have received much less attention. This paper analyzes changing consumption habits for fresh fruits and vegetables in Vietnam, using household survey data and a demand systems approach. Demand for products from modern supply chains – particularly modern retailers and non-traditional imports – is highly income elastic. Also, supermarket expansion impacts on consumer demand. This implies a continued restructuring of the food sector in the further process of economic development.
