Abundance of the invasive lionfish Pterois volitans in the coastal coral reefs from Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Chasqui,Luis; Rincón-Díaz,Natalia; Vanegas,María Juliana.
ABSTRACT The abundance of the invasive lionfish Pterois volitans was assessed through visual censuses conducted in 2015 and 2016 at 54 sites in six localities with coral reefs across the Colombian Caribbean coast. The invader was observed across locations and in most of the dives, with sighting frequency of 88 %, abundance values from 0 to 9.7 ± 2.1 ind/250 m2 (388 ind/ha), and 0.8 ± 1.3 ind/250 m2 (32 ind/ha) as total mean. The average density was similar to values reported in other works that counted lionfish in a broad spatial scale on the invaded area and the highest value approximated the maximum density estimated in Colombia and other locations around the Caribbean.

LITHOPHAGA NIGRA (D'ORBIGNY, 1853) (MOLLUSCA: BIVALVIA: MYTILIDAE), PRIMER REGISTRO PARA EL CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez Soto,Carlos E; Rico,Tatiana; Ardila,Néstor E; Sanjuan-Muñoz,Adolfo.
Lithophaga nigra (d'Orbigny, 1853) is an uncommon boring bivalve that inhabits dead coral skeletons and occurs in the Caribbean Sea and the Indopacific region. One specimen of this species was collected within a dead head of the coral Montastraea sp. in Playa Blanca, (bahía de Gaira) near Santa Marta at 10 m of depth, and it is recorded for the first time in the Colombian Caribbean.

A NEW SPECIES OF SAND EEL GENUS BASCANICHTHYS (ANGUILLIFORMES: OPHICHTHIDAE) FROM THE CARIBBEAN Boletín de Investigaciones
Moreno,Fabián; Acero P,Arturo; Grijalba-Bendeck,Marcela.
A new species of the sand eel genus Bascanichthys (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) is described from specimens found inside the stomachs of mature female numbfish Narcine bancroftii. These rays were collected as bycatch in local fisheries, using beach seines in shallow waters (5 to 10 m) in Gaira Bay (Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean). Bascanichthys gaira n.sp., is described from three specimens and can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its minute pectoral-fin base (12.324.7% of gill-opening length) and its vertebral number (189).

Comparison of the upwellings of the Colombian Guajira and eastern Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez Gaspar,Alfredo; Acero P.,Arturo.
ABSTRACT In the southern Caribbean, there are two main upwelling areas, the Colombian Guajira and eastern Venezuela. However, fishing production is highly dissimilar, even though in the Guajira the wind intensity is stronger and theoretically the upwelling is more intense. For this reason, it should have a higher fishing production than Venezuela, which is not the case. The possible reasons for this important difference are presented, detailing aspects related to wind, hydrography, nutrient concentration, phytoplankton biomass, continental shelf, river contribution, island presence and other factors. Eastern Venezuela has greater fertility and fishing production because the Subtropical Subsuperficial Water mass is what supplies the water upwelling during...
