A growing interest in mapping the social value of ecosystem services (ES) is not yet methodologically aligned with what is actually being mapped. We critically examine aspects of the social value mapping process that might influence map outcomes and limit their practical use in decision making. We rely on an empirical case of participatory mapping, for a single ES (recreation opportunities), which involves diverse stakeholders such as planners, researchers, and community representatives. Value elicitation relied on an individual open-ended interview and a mapping exercise. Interpretation of the narratives and GIS calculations of proximity, centrality, and dispersion helped in exploring the factors driving participants’ answers. Narratives reveal... |

We present a new record of coccolithophore (coccoliths) export productivity for the past 30,000 years based on the study of a marine sediment core collected at the western entrance of the Strait of Magellan (Core MD07-3128; 53 degrees S, 75 degrees W). This sediment core revealed the presence of an assemblage composed by thirteen coccolithophore taxa, dominated by small Gephyrocapsa (> 80% of the total assemblage on the average) and accompanied, in less proportions (1-10%), by two morphotypes of Emiliana huxleyi, Coccolithus pelagicus and Calcidiscus leptoporus. Coccolith concentration and CaCO3 content were strongly correlated (P << 0.01; R-2 = 0.63). In general, both records were in phase with alkenone-derived sea-surface temperature (Caniupan... |

The mytilid mussel Mytilus chilensis (Hupe) can form dense beds in sedimentary areas of the inland coast of the Nord-Patagonic archipelagos of the Chilean coast (ca. 40-43° S). During the autumn of 2002, we collected replicated samples at five intertidal stations in Panitao (Golfo de Reloncaví) ordered along a transect parallel to the low tide level and extended from the center of the bank (stations one and two with 100 and ca. 25 % of mussel cover, respectively) to the bare sediments of the intertidal (stations 3, 4 and 5, without mussels). The macroinfauna was numerically dominated by Polychaeta, Oligochaeta and Crustacea Peracarida. The total number of species collected was 14, being the most abundant the polychaete Perinereis vallata, oligochaetes from... |

The southern Chilean archipelago and fjordland (41-52° S) thus far is very poorly investigated also with regard to its nudibranch fauna. This study presents the first records of nudibranchs from remote islands of the Chonos archipelago exposed to the open Pacific. Collecting data and some biological observations are given for the doridoidean Archidoris fontaini, Diaulula punctuolata and Rostanga pulchra. Taxonomically relevant external and radular characters of R. pulchra are redescribed and compared with literature data on conspecifics from Argentina and California. The bipolar, cold-water adapted R. pulchra is critically compared with the western Atlantic, warm-water adapted R. byga. New distributional data indicates that the Chiloé Island area (41-43°... |

Three sandy beaches located in southern Chile (Gaviotas, Guabún and Mar Brava; ca. 42º S) were studied during the summer of 2000 to analyse the patterns in abundance and biomass of the meiofauna along a gradient of morphodynamic beach types. Sediment samples were collected with metallic cylinders (23 cm² cross sectional area, 120 cm long) at ten equally spaced tidal levels along six transects separated between 5 and 10 m and extending from above the drift line down to the low tide level. Porosity, shear strength, water content, penetrability and grain size of the substrate were measured in each sampling level. The meiofauna was primarily represented by Nematoda and Copepoda Harpacticoidea. The highest average density and biomass per unit of area were found... |

Chironomid assemblages and sedimentological parameters (grain size, organic content, mineralogy) of a short sediment core from Lake Galletué (38°41' S, 71°17' W) were analysed. The sedimentary record includes one volcanic ash (tephra) layer, which has a completely different composition than the host sediment in terms of organic content, grain size, and mineralogy. According to the geochronology (210Pb and 137Cs), this ash layer corresponds to the eruption of Llaima Volcano in 1956-1957. The tephra deposition had an impact on chironomid assemblages producing, among other changes, an increase in Parakiefferiella and a decrease in Ablabesmyia, although no noticeable change was detected in the diversity index. When compared with other studies, our results also... |
