EN-US: Due to the reduced host spectrum of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium rileyi, its pathogenicity against different target insects must be assessed to develop biopesticides capable of controlling more than one pest species. This study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of the pest species Chrysodeixis includens and Spodoptera frugiperda to different isolates of M. rileyi and, thus, determine a possible influence of the host of origin on the pathogenic activity of these isolates. Three isolates [CG1312 (C. includens as original host), CG381 (S. frugiperda as original host) and a new wild isolate (C. includens as original host)] were tested against larvae of C. includens and S. frugiperda, in third instar age, by treatment of surfaces with... |

The cultivation of soybean near to cotton areas has favored the migration of lepidopteran pests between those crops, including the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens, which usually attacks soybean leaves but can also attack cotton plants. The objective of this study is to identify the density of C. includens larvae capable of decreasing cotton productivity. Six treatments (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 16 larvae.meter-1) with five replications were arranged in a completely randomized block design. Plants of cultivar FM 944GL at stage F2 were protected by PVC cages (length, 1.0 m; width, 1.0 m, height, 1.6 m) covered with organza fabric and infested with third-instar larvae. Crop yield and defoliation data were subjected to analysis of variance using the F-test and... |

Since 2009, increasing populations of Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) have been observed in cultivated common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) at the Lageado Experimental Farm, belonging to the FCA/UNESP, Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Defoliations around 80% and 50% were observed in the common bean cv. Pérola and castor bean cv. IAC-2028, respectively. Samples of individuals (caterpillars and pupae) were collected in the field, and kept in laboratory until adult emergence aiming to confirm the species. These are new observations for common bean in São Paulo State and, in the case of castor bean, unpublished in Brazil. It suggests that C. includens has adapted to attack other agricultural... |

Abstract Chrysodeixis includens has become the major Lepidopteran pest of soybean crops, especially in the Brazilian Cerrado (savanna) region. A native isolate of Chrysodeixis includens nucleopolyhedrovirus (ChinNPV) from this region, Buritis, MG, was assessed for its biological and molecular features. In addition, in vitro co-infection with Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV), another virus of an important soybean pest, was tested. The ChinNPV-Buritis isolate presented an average LC50 of 7,750 occlusion bodies (OBs)/ml of diet in C. includens larvae. Analysis of restriction endonuclease profiles of viral DNA revealed similarities with previously described ChinNPV isolates IE, IF, and IG from Brazil, although the presence of... |
