Management actions to protect endangered species and conserve ecosystem function may not always be in precise alignment. Efforts to recover the California Ridgway’s Rail (Rallus obsoletus obsoletus; hereafter, California rail), a federally and state-listed species, and restoration of tidal marsh ecosystems in the San Francisco Bay estuary provide a prime example of habitat restoration that has conflicted with species conservation. Effects of plant cover on the macrofauna of Spartina marshes in northern Brazil BABT

Data on macrofauna density and diversity, and the height and density of Spartina brasiliensis, were obtained from salt marsh beds of a tropical estuary in northern Brazil. Sampling was carried out at four distinct times of the year, during the wet and dry seasons and in the transition periods between these. Sampling was also carried out in salt marshes of three size classes, small, medium and large. Variables were analyzed in relation to time of year and salt marsh size class. Overall, 46 taxa were found, with polychaetes, isopods and the gastropod Neritina virginea dominating the fauna. Desinfección de cariopses y regeneración de plantas de Spartina argentinensis Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

Se desarrolló un protocolo de desinfección y regeneración in vitro de Spartina argentinensis. El menor porcentaje de contaminación se obtuvo tratando los cariopses por 60 s en etanol 90° y 20 min de inmersión en hipoclorito de sodio al 2,5% con Tween 20. La inducción de callos se realizó en medio Murashige y Skoog (MS) suplementado con 0,5 mg•L-1 de ácido diclorofenoxi acético (2,4-D) y 1 mg•L-1 de ácido indol acético (AIA). La mayor (20%) regeneración de vastagos se logró con igual base salina y 0,25 mg•L-1 de bencilamino purina (BAP). Se utilizó 0,025 mg•L-1 de ácido naftalen acético para la regeneración de raíces.
