Spatial and temporal population genetic variation and structure of Nothotsuga longibracteata (Pinaceae), a relic conifer species endemic to subtropical China Genet. Mol. Biol.
Qiu,Yingjun; Liu,Yifei; Kang,Ming; Yi,Guanmei; Huang,Hongwen.
Nothotsuga longibracteata, a relic and endangered conifer species endemic to subtropical China, was studied for examining the spatial-temporal population genetic variation and structure to understand the historical biogeographical processes underlying the present geographical distribution. Ten populations were sampled over the entire natural range of the species for spatial analysis, while three key populations with large population sizes and varied age structure were selected for temporal analyses using both nuclear microsatellites (nSSR) and chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSR). A recent bottleneck was detected in the natural populations of N. longibracteata. The spatial genetic analysis showed significant population genetic differentiation across its...

Pollen and seed flow patterns of Carapa guianensis Aublet. (Meliaceae) in two types of Amazonian forest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martins,Karina; Raposo,Andréa; Klimas,Christie A; Veasey,Elizabeth A; Kainer,Karen; Wadt,Lúcia Helena O.
Various factors affect spatial genetic structure in plant populations, including adult density and primary and secondary seed dispersal mechanisms. We evaluated pollen and seed dispersal distances and spatial genetic structure of Carapa guianensis Aublet. (Meliaceae) in occasionally inundated and terra firme forest environments that differed in tree densities and secondary seed dispersal agents. We used parentage analysis to obtain contemporary gene flow estimates and assessed the spatial genetic structure of adults and juveniles. Despite the higher density of adults (diameter at breast height ; 25 cm) and spatial aggregation in occasionally inundated forest, the average pollen dispersal distance was similar in both types of forest (195 ± 106min terra...

SSR-based analysis of clonality, spatial genetic structure and introgression from the Lombardy poplar into a natural population of Populus nigra L. along the Loire River ArchiMer
Chenault, Nicolas; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Juteau, Mary; Valade, Romain; Almeida, Jose-luis; Villar, Marc; Bastien, Catherine; Dowkiw, Arnaud.
A scarcity of favourable habitats and introgression from exotic cultivars are two major threats to black poplars (Populus nigra L.) in Europe. Natural vegetative propagation contributes to maintenance of the species in areas where seedling recruitment is limited. Exhaustive sampling of all mature trees in a natural P. nigra stand (413 individuals at recorded positions), genotyping at 11 SSR loci, and a standardized analysis framework resulted in a precise description of clonality in terms of (a) frequency, (b) spatial growth form, and (c) impacts on the overall spatial genetic structure (SGS). The high proportion of replicated genotypes detected resulted in a genotypic richness (R) of 0.47. Up to 18 ramets were found per multilocus lineage (MLL), but 95%...

Invasive north american Beaver (Castor canadensis): the distribution of mitochondrial variation across the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego Mastozool. neotrop.
Fasanella,Mariana; Poljak,Sebastián; Lizarralde,Marta S..
In 1946 twenty-five pairs of Castor canadensis were introduced into the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). Thanks both to environmental conditions favorable for colonization and an absence of effective control measures, today the estimated abundance is about 100 000 individuals. We have conducted molecular analysis of beavers from three areas of the Archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, in order to characterize the genetic structure of the invasive population. Our results from AMOVA (Fst= 0.104, p < 0.001) suggest that geographical barriers and large distances could limit gene flow among the populations. In the Tierra del Fuego National Park subpopulation, we found a positive and significant autocorrelation out to 800 m (r = 0.193, p = 0.003) and...
