Economic feasibility of probiotic use in the diet of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, during the reproductive period 2
Dias, Danielle de Carla; Furlaneto, Fernanda de Paiva Badiz; Sussel, Fábio Rosa; Tachibana, Leonardo; Gonçalves, Giovani Sampaio; Ishikawa, Carlos Massatoshi; Natori, Mariene Miyoko; Ranzani-Paiva, Maria José Tavares.
This work examines the economic advantages of probiotic use in the diet of Nile tilapia broodstock during the reproductive period. For this purpose, Bacillus subtilis was applied as a feed additive. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatment groups: the T0 control (without probiotic), the T1 continuous probiotic intake, and the T2 alternate probiotic intake at a dose of 0.50 g kg-1 of feed (1010 CFU g-1) with four replicates. For the reproduction assay, 118 females and 48 males of Nile tilapia (proportion 4 males:9 females. hapa-1) (weight 527.65 g ± 185.98 g and length 30.16 cm ± 3.57 cm) were distributed into 12 hapas (3.5 × 2.0 × 1.5 m). Reproductive variables (spawning female percentage, egg production, and fry production)...

Cunha, Cristiane Honorato; Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro; Oshiro, Lídia Miyako Yoshii; Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro.
Macrobrachium acanthurus is distributed along the Brazilian coastal rivers and shows potential for aquaculture. This study was carried out to provide information on the reproduction of M. acanthurus in captivity and the influence of unilateral eyestalk ablation. A total of 48 females and 24 males were captured in the Sahy river in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State. The animals were distributed into twelve 20-liter aquariums, each with two males and four females. Two females in each aquarium were ablated. Every day the occurrence of ovigerous females was checked in each aquarium. The U test (Mann-Whitney) showed a significant difference among laying intervals and the number of hatchings between ablated and non ablated females.

Urophysial and pituitary extracts for spawning induction in teleosts 65
Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Parra,Walter Garcia; Brandão,Deodoro Atlante; Herke,Zolst.
Several studies have suggested that the caudal neurosecretory system could act on fish reproduction. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of urophysial extract (UE) and carp pituitary homogenate (CPH) on the induction of spawning in Hoplias malabaricus, Rhamdia quelen and Cyprinus carpio. The amount of UE injected was 1.0 to 3.0mg/kg L.W. (single dose) and CPH 3.0 to 4.0mg/kg L.W. (two doses). The application of UE had no effect on spawning induction, while CPH improved spawning of all studied species.

Tidal level influence on the spawning process of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) on a rocky shore (Bay of Biscay). 5
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Mahias, Jeremy; Castets, Virginie; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is an important exploited resource on the Mediterranean coast and has been the subject of much research. In the Bay of Biscay, the situation is different, as some studies have been conducted on the Spanish Basque coast but few on the French part of that coast. However, the Basque coast offers favourable conditions for the development of this species, and its exploitation could be a source of potential diversification for fishermen, especially in the context of difficulties with some other resources. At the request of the managers of this coastal resource, a study was undertaken on sea urchins to improve knowledge of this stock, particularly about its biological characteristics. In this work, assessment consisted of...

Potential feeding and spawning habitats of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea 5
Druon, Jean-noel; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Aulanier, Florian; Heikkonen, Jukka.
Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (ABFT) is a fish of high market value which has recently become strongly overexploited, notably in the Mediterranean Sea. This area is an essential habitat for ABFT reproduction and growth. We present here an approach for deriving the daily mapping of potential ABFT feeding and spawning habitats based on satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) and chl a concentration. The feeding habitat was mainly derived from the simultaneous occurrence of oceanic fronts of temperature and chl a content while the spawning habitat was mostly inferred from the heating of surface waters. Generally, higher chl a contents were found to be preferred for the feeding habitat and a minimum SST value was found for the spawning habitat....

Review and current status of the aquaculture potential for the mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus 5
Kraul, S.
The mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus , has excellent potential for aquaculture due to its fast growth (2 kg at 6 months, 9 kg at 1 year), good food conversion efficiency (30%, wet weight), high fecundity with natural captive spawns (200,000 eggs/female/2 days year round for a 1 year old female), and high price (US$ 9.00/kg wholesale in Hawaii).

Cycle ovarien du merlu, Merluccius merluccius , poisson a ponte fractionnee. 5
Sarano, F.
The present work analyses and describes Merluccius merluccius ovarian cycle in the Bay of Biscay as an example of partial spawner. Three methods were employed: a macroscopic examination of about 10,000 ovaries -- a cytologic and histologic study -- an investigation of the size structure of the oocytes population of 63 ovaries. The author developed an original mathematical method for serial spawning demonstration. He demonstrates that hake is a partial spawner: a female usually rapidly spawns 4 or 5 times without ovaries rest. On this basis, he gives a new reference scale of the maturity stages of the ovarian cycle: after developing (II), ripe (III), running (IV), the partly spent ovary is named (II+); the repetitive sequence III-IV-II + characterize serial...

Linking life-history traits, spatial distribution and abundance of two species of lugworms to bait collection: A case study for sustainable management plan 5
De Cubber, Lola; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Fisseau, Charline; Cornille, Vincent; Gaudron, Sylvie Marylene.
Arenicola spp. are marine benthic polychaetes dug for bait by anglers. Without regulation, this activity can lead to the decrease of lugworms' population meanwhile affecting the physical characteristics of the beach and the biodiversity. Here, we identified through morphology and genetics two species of lugworms, Arenicola marina and A. defodiens, within a Marine Protected Area of the Eastern English Channel (France). For each species, abundance and spatial distribution were assessed using a stratified random sampling and interpolation at four studied sites, as well as some life-history traits. These data were compared to lugworms' collection data to estimate its sustainability and to provide potential management measures. At one site, A. marina was...

Snook (Centropomidae) and grouper (Serranidae) mariculture in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Basin 5
Roberts Jr, D.
Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ).

Maturation and spawning of tropical and subtropical marine finfish by environmental manipulations 5
Roberts Jr, D.
Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae.

Contrôles de la distribution spatiale de l'habitat de reproduction chez les populations de poissons. Approche multi-modèles appliquée à la plie et au merlan de Mer du Nord et à l'anchois du Golfe de Gascogne 5
Loots, Christophe.
Spawning is a crucial phase of fish life cycle as it ensures the renewal of individuals in the population. The identification of factors that influence its spatial dynamic is therefore a key feature as it will affect the reproduction success of fish population. A multi-model approach has been developed in order to identify factors that control the spatial distribution of spawning adults of plaice and whiting in the North Sea and of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay. Generalised additive models have been used to relate presenceabsence of adults and their abundances to several hypotheses of control external (geographical position and environment) and internal to the population (spatial dependency, size, age structure and memory). Models were then ranked according...

Etude experimentale de la maturation ovocytaire chez Pecten maximus et Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) 5
Widowati, L; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dorange, G; Le Pennec, M.
To date, it has been impossible to fertilize the oocytes of ripe Pecten maximus obtained by gonad stripping as it is routinely done in hatchery with Crassostrea gigas . The events occurring between artificial induction of spawning and normal fertilization were studied experimentally in order to explain this difference. Fertilization and rearing trials were performed on oocytes obtained from the gonads of both species by scarification, by aspiration from genital ducts (of P. maximus only) and after spawning. Every batch of oocytes was fixed for histological study. Serial sections of the gonad of a fixed spawning P. maximus were made to reveal modifications of the nucleus of the oocytes during their expulsion. In P. maximus the stripped oocytes can be...

Sexual dimorphism of drumming muscles in European hake (Merluccius merluccius) 5
Groison, Anne-laure; Kjesbu, Olav S.; Suquet, Marc.
Dissections of mature and non-mature European hake males and females (N=142) collected in waters off the western coast of Norway and in the Bay of Biscay (France) in 2004-2006 demonstrate for the first time that this gadoid species contains drumming muscles. There were differences in drumming muscles weight with body length, sex and maturity stage. This study shows that the difference between females and males is primarily manifested during the spawning season, seen both in the French and Norwegian samples. For the mature females the drumming muscles dry weight increases only slightly, if at all, with increase in total length. For mature males there is a corresponding rapid increase. There does not seem to be any consistent difference between the average...
