Effects of supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and aerobic training on physical performance of Mangalarga Marchador mares R. Bras. Zootec.
Garcia,Tiago Resende; Rezende,Adalgiza Souza Carneiro de; Trigo,Pablo; Santiago,Juliano Martins; Almeida,Fernando Queiroz de; Terra,Rosângela Antunes; Fonseca,Mayara Gonçalves; Castejón,Francisco.
The objective of this study was to assess the effects of supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the performance of Mangalarga Marchador equines and to verify the effectiveness of the aerobic training protocol adopted. The study used 14 Mangalarga Marchador mares in a completely randomized split-plot design. The plots were made up of two treatments (groups Probiotic and Control) and the split plots comprised two maximal-effort physical tests applied both before and after the six weeks of training. The animals' spirometric parameters, heart rate, and plasma lactate levels were assessed. No difference was found between the Probiotic and Control groups in any of the parameters assessed. A difference was found in the physical tests for...

Chronic symptoms and pulmonary dysfunction in post-tuberculosis Brazilian patients BJID
Nihues,Simone de Sousa Elias; Mancuzo,Eliane Viana; Sulmonetti,Nara; Sacchi,Flávia Patussi Correia; Viana,Vanessa de Souza; Martins Netto,Eduardo; Miranda,Silvana Spindola; Croda,Julio.
ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Questionnaire and spirometry were applied to post-tuberculosis indigenous and non-indigenous individuals from Dourados, Brazil, to investigate the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms and pulmonary dysfunction.METHODS:This was a cross-sectional study in cured tuberculosis individuals as reported in the National System on Reportable Diseases (SINAN) from 2002 to 2012.RESULTS:One hundred and twenty individuals were included in the study and the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms was 45% (95% CI, 34-59%). Respiratory symptoms included cough (28%), sputum (23%), wheezing (22%) and dyspnea (8%). These symptoms were associated with alcoholism, AOR: 3.1 (1.2-8.4); less than 4 years of schooling, AOR: 5.0 (1.4-17.7); and previous...

Correlation between heart rate variability and pulmonary function adjusted by confounding factors in healthy adults BJMBR
Bianchim,M.S.; Sperandio,E.F.; Martinhão,G.S.; Matheus,A.C.; Lauria,V.T.; da Silva,R.P.; Spadari,R.C.; Gagliardi,A.R.T.; Arantes,R.L.; Romiti,M.; Dourado,V.Z..
The autonomic nervous system maintains homeostasis, which is the state of balance in the body. That balance can be determined simply and noninvasively by evaluating heart rate variability (HRV). However, independently of autonomic control of the heart, HRV can be influenced by other factors, such as respiratory parameters. Little is known about the relationship between HRV and spirometric indices. In this study, our objective was to determine whether HRV correlates with spirometric indices in adults without cardiopulmonary disease, considering the main confounders (e.g., smoking and physical inactivity). In a sample of 119 asymptomatic adults (age 20-80 years), we evaluated forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). We...

Efficacy of the FEV1/FEV6 ratio compared to the FEV1/FVC ratio for the diagnosis of airway obstruction in subjects aged 40 years or over BJMBR
Rosa,F.W.; Perez-Padilla,R.; Camelier,A.; Nascimento,O.A.; Menezes,A.M.B.; Jardim,J.R.
The present cross-sectional, population-based study was designed to evaluate the performance of the FEV1/FEV6 ratio for the detection of airway-obstructed subjects compared to the FEV1/FVC <0.70 fixed ratio test, as well as the lower limit of normality (LLN) for 1000 subjects ³40 years of age in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, SP, Brazil. After the exclusion of 37 (3.7%) spirometries, a total of 963 pre-bronchodilator (BD) and 918 post-BD curves were constructed. The majority of the post-BD curves (93.1%) were of very good quality and achieved grade A (762 curves) or B (93 curves). The FEV1/FEV6 and FEV1/FVC ratios were highly correlated (r² = 0.92, P < 0.000). Two receiver operator characteristic curves were constructed in order to express the...

Spirometry reference values in the Brazilian population BJMBR
Rufino,R.; Costa,C.H.; Lopes,A.J.; Maiworm,A.I.; Maynard,K.; Silva,L.M.R.A.; Dias,R.M..
The aim of the present study was to provide new spirometry reference equations in a sample of the Brazilian population for the following parameters: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, peak of expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow at 50% (FEF50%), 75% average vital capacity (FEF25-75%), and average forced expiratory flow time (FEFT). This was a prospective study using results from chest radiographs, electrocardiograms, and questionnaires to investigate the participants' respiratory symptoms, sedentarism, and comorbidities (Charlson comorbidity index). From December 2010 to July 2014, individuals were randomly selected from various locations in the state of Rio de Janeiro. All individuals were...

Use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing to assess early ventilatory changes related to occupational particulate matter BJMBR
Chao,T.P.; Sperandio,E.F.; Ostolin,T.L.V.P.; Almeida,V.R.; Romiti,M.; Gagliardi,A.R.T.; Arantes,R.L.; Dourado,V.Z..
Spirometry has been used as the main strategy for assessing ventilatory changes related to occupational exposure to particulate matter (OEPM). However, in some cases, as one of its limitations, it may not be sensitive enough to show abnormalities before extensive damage, as seen in restrictive lung diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) may be better than spirometry to detect early ventilatory impairment caused by OEPM. We selected 135 male workers with at least one year of exposure. After collection of self-reported socioeconomic status, educational level, and cardiovascular risk data, participants underwent spirometry, CPET, body composition assessment (bioelectrical impedance), and triaxial accelerometry (for...

Decreased respiratory performance of children and adolescents with myelomeningocele who use a wheelchair – preliminary data BJMBR
Martins,E.J.; Gastaldi,A.C.; Davoli,G.B.Q.; Leonardi-Figueiredo,M.M.; Mattiello-Sverzut,A.C..
Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a neural tube defect that often causes spinal cord injury at the thoracolumbar region, as well as sensory and motor paralysis in the lower limbs. This leads to continuous use of a wheelchair and, consequently, a sedentary lifestyle, predisposition to muscle weakness, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, obesity, and structural alterations in the spine. We assessed the respiratory function and shoulder strength of MMC participants who were wheelchair-users and had no respiratory complaints and compared them to healthy children and adolescents. MMC (n=10) and healthy (n=25) participants of both genders with a mean age of 12.45 years (SD=2.1) were assessed for weight, height, respiratory performance, and isometric peak for...
