The present review investigated the sources of energy for detritivorous fish species in floodplains. Recent studies have shown that environmental changes that alter the terrestrial vegetation affect essentially the resource base in these areas, such as the detritus. In aquatic environments, especially floodplains, a major part of metabolic processes is supported by terrestrial detritus, which accounts for maintaining the detritivorous food chain. Thus, one way to evaluate environments changes is through isotopic studies of organic matter, which allows acquiring information about the quantity and quality of organic matter. This approach is required for understanding the interactions between the organic matter dynamics and its ecological effects, allowing... |

The present study examined the influence of the availability of riparian vegetation and C3 emergent aquatic macrophytes on carbon assimilation by Prochilodus lineatus. The vegetal cover of these producers, available at 30 m of the bank, for the terrestrial ecosystem of the rivers Baia, Ivinheima and Paraná, was quantified with the image processing Landsat 5 TM, of the year 2000, period of sampling of the biological material at each river. The assimilation of the energy sources (riparian vegetation and C3 aquatic macrophytes, C4 aquatic macrophytes, periphyton, and phytoplankton) by P. lineatus was determined by analysis of stable carbon isotopes (δ13C). The area of vegetal cover was estimated at 1,017 km2 in the Ivinheima river, 669 km2 in the Paraná... |

Abstract Isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is a potential tool that provides time-integrated estimate of assimilated and not just ingested nutrients. This feature turned possible its application to evaluate the effects of dietary nucleotides and glutamate on carbon turnover (δ13C) in the brain of weanling piglets. Eighty-seven piglets weaned at 21-day-old were used, being three piglets slaughtered at day-0 (prior to diet-switch) and, the remaining 84 randomly assigned in a complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (two nucleotide levels: 0% and 0.1% and, two glutamate levels: 0% and 1%). On trial days 3, 6, 9, 14, 21, 35 and 49, three piglets per treatment were also slaughtered. The samples were analyzed by IRMS and... |

The inclusion of poultry viscera meal (VM) in broiler diets to possibly replace it with strictly vegetable diet (VE) and vice-versa, using the technique of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in different tissues was traced. One hundred ninety-two one-day-old chicks that had been distributed randomly were used in twelve experimental treatments with four replications of four chicks each. The treatments consisted of vegetable diet (VG) for diets containing FV going after a certain age or the reverse, in which the birds began feeding VM on diet and then switched to VE diet. At 42 days of age, samples of pectoral muscle (Pectoralis major), keel and tibia were collected, with later determination of isotopic ratios (13C/12C and 15N/14N). The stable isotopes... |

Terrestrial invertebrates link terrestrial systems to aquatic ones, making vegetal material produced in the watershed available to aquatic food webs. In this study, using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, we evaluated the importance of introduced C4 grasses as a source of carbon in aquatic food webs of headwater streams of the coastal Atlantic Forest located on the north coast of the State of São Paulo, in the southeastern region of Brazil. Terrestrial invertebrates were collected in two streams: one where the main land cover was pristine montane Atlantic Forest (forest stream) and another where the main land cover was introduced C4 forage grasses for livestock (pasture stream). The average δ13C of terrestrial invertebrates collected in the forest... |

ABSTRACT Lionfish was studied in the mesophotic environment. 237 specimens were observed, most in the upper mesophotic zone. Males were larger than females and differences between sexes in growth models were found. Sixteen prey items were identified, the most important being the teleost families Acanthuridae and Monacanthidae, and the crustacean Penaeidae. The mean of δ13C was -17.08 ± 0.36 ‰ and δ15N was 8.68 ± 0.46 ‰, with no differences between sexes. Lionfish occupies a less extensive isotopic niche in mesophotic environment than in shallow sectors; there is an isotopic niche overlap between sexes. Likewise, lionfish has specialized trophic habits. All specimens were mature and in females regression phase predominated. In females, condition factor... |

Worldwide kelp forests have been the focus of several studies concerning ecosystems dysfunction in the past decades. Multifactorial kelp threats have been described and include deforestation due to human impact, cascading effects and climate change. Here, we compared community and trophic structure in two contrasting kelp forests off the coasts of Brittany. One has been harvested five years before sampling and shelters abundant omnivorous predators, almost absent from the other, which has been treated as preserved from kelp harvest. δ15N analyses conducted on the overall communities were linked to the tropho-functional structure of different strata featuring these forests (stipe and holdfast of canopy kelp and rock). Our results yielded site-to-site... |

The coralligenous ecosystem is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean Sea. This study aims at determining (i) the organic matter (OM) sources at the base of the food web in a coralligenous ecosystem near Marseille (Cap Caveau, Frioul Island) and (ii) the global functional structure of its community. For that purpose, C and N stable isotope analyses were performed on 78 compartments or species collected in this habitat between 30 and 40 m depth. Results suggested that the pelagic particulate organic matter (POM), mainly composed of phytoplankton, was the main OM source fuelling coralligenous food webs, followed by sedimented organic matter (SOM) and some macrophytes. At least three level of consumers were identified from... |

Although initial studies have demonstrated the applicability of Ni isotopes for cosmochemistry and as a potential biosignature, the Ni isotope composition of terrestrial igneous and sedimentary rocks, and ore deposits remains poorly known. Our contribution is fourfold: (a) to detail an analytical procedure for Ni isotope determination, (b) to determine the Ni isotope composition of various geological reference materials, (c) to assess the isotope composition of the Bulk Silicate Earth relative to the Ni isotope reference material NIST SRM 986 and (d) to report the range of mass-dependent Ni isotope fractionations in magmatic rocks and ore deposits. After purification through a two-stage chromatography procedure, Ni isotope ratios were measured by MC-ICP-MS... |
