Response of diatom and dinoflagellate lifeforms to reduced phosphorus loading: a case study in the Thau lagoon, France ArchiMer
Gowen, R. J.; Collos, Y.; Tett, P.; Scherer, C.; Bec, B.; Abadie, Eric; Allen, M.; O'Brien, T..
The basin of Thau in southern France is a shallow, weakly flushed lagoon which is an important location for oyster cultivation. Phytoplankton analyses were carried out in 1975-1976 and then (almost) continuously since 1987. We report an investigation of 'the balance of organisms' in phytoplankton in relation to reductions in phosphorus loading, using two new tools based on phytoplankton lifeforms: the Plankton Index for Phytoplankton (PIp); Euclidean distance in state space. Our results show the utility of the tools for analysing changes in the ‘balance of organisms’ at the level of functional groups (in our study diatoms and dinoflagellates), but also illustrate the difficulties in demonstrating the reversal of human impacts resulting from eutrophication....

Common Trends, Common Cycles, and Price Relationships in the International Fiber Market - Evidence from a Seemingly Unrelated Structural Time Series AgEcon
Fadiga, Mohamadou L.; Misra, Sukant K..
This study shows that the stochastic process that governs price fluctuations in the international fiber market has transitory and permanent components. The results also indicate structural relationships between cotton price and wool price, wool price and oil price, rayon price and cotton price, and between polyester price and cotton price.

Common Trends, Common Cycles, and Price Relationships in the International Fiber Market AgEcon
Fadiga, Mohamadou L.; Misra, Sukant K..
A multivariate unobserved component model was applied to identify common movements among cotton, wool, rayon, and polyester world prices. Two common stochastic trends and cycles govern the stochastic behaviors of price fluctuations in the world fiber market. These unobserved components have important implications as they can help in the design of more efficient commodity programs to smooth terms of trade shocks, especially in developing countries. The study found the effect of inventory adjustments on world cotton price is diminishing, which indicates that speculative behaviors in the world fiber market are less prevalent than previously thought.

State-space approach for the analysis of soil water content and temperature in a sugarcane crop Scientia Agricola
Dourado-Neto,Durval; Timm,Luís Carlos; Oliveira,Julio Cesar Martins de; Reichardt,Klaus; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Tominaga,Tania Toyomi; Cássaro,Fabio Augusto Meira.
The state-space approach is used to describe surface soil water content and temperature behaviour, in a field experiment in which sugarcane is submitted to different management practices. The treatments consisted of harvest trash mulching, bare soil, and burned trash, all three in a ratoon crop, after first cane harvest. One transect of 84 points was sampled, meter by meter, covering all treatments and borders. The state-space approach is described in detail and the results show that soil water contents measured along the transect could successfully be estimated from water content and temperature observations made at the first neighbour.
