Entomopathogenic nematodes: potential for exploration and use in South America Neotropical Entomology
GREWAL,PARWINDER S.; NARDO,ELIZABETH A. B. DE; AGUILLERA,MARINEIDE M..
Entomopathogenic nematodes have potential for biological control of insect pests. They are currently used for the control of soil and cryptic pests in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Entomopathogenic nematodes can be easily mass-produced and applied using conventional spray equipment. They have a broad host range and are safe to the environment. Due to the history of success with implementation of biological pest control programs, South American countries have a great opportunity to develop and implement the use of entomopathogenic nematodes. Recent emphasis on fruit and vegetable production in Brazil also stresses a need to implement safer and effective pest control methods. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in...

Screening of entomopathogenic nematodes (Nemata: Rhabditida) and the efficiency of Heterorhabditis sp. against the sugarcane root spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Fabr.) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) Neotropical Entomology
Leite,Luís G.; Machado,Laerte A.; Goulart,Roberto M.; Tavares,Fernando M.; Batista Filho,Antonio.
The pathogenicity of six entomopathogenic nematodes was assessed against nymphs of the sugarcane root spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Fabr.), in the laboratory. The efficiency of the most virulent agent was tested in the field. Seven laboratory treatments were designed with two specimens of the genus Heterorhabditis, three of Steinernema, one specimen of Steinernema glaseri (Steiner), and a control group. In the field, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment involved nine treatments: the control, four treatments with Heterorhabditis sp. (CB-n5) applied to the straw mulch at doses 6.6 x 10(7), 3.3 x 10(8), 6.6 x 10(8) and 3.3 x 10(9) IJs/ha, and four treatments with the nematodes applied to the soil and beneath the straw mulch layer, at the...

Substrates for storing entomopathogenic nematodes (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae, Heterorhabditidae) Scientia Agricola
Andaló,Vanessa; Cavalcanti,Ricardo Sousa; Molina,Juan Pablo; Moino Jr.,Alcides.
The survival of entomopathogenic nematodes under laboratory conditions is low. With the aim of evaluating substrates to extend the survival of entomopathogenic nematodes, suspensions of Heterorhabditis sp. JPM4 and Steinernema carpocapsae All (3,000 IJ mL-1) were added to dirt, fine sand, coarse sand, foam, expanded clay, phenolic foam, agar, corn starch, Plantmax®, and water. The substrates were placed on Petri dishes (5 cm) and kept at 16 ± 1°C. Survival evaluations were made after 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days, with three replicates. After 180 d, a greater percentage of S. carpocapsae infective juveniles (IJs) were still alive in the foam treatment (57.5%) as compared to other treatments, while expanded clay (28.4%), Plantmax® (9.3%) and phenolic...

Evaluation of entomopathogenic nematodes under laboratory and greenhouses conditions for the control of Spodoptera frugiperda Ciência Rural
Andaló,Vanessa; Santos,Viviane; Moreira,Grazielle Furtado; Moreira,Camila Costa; Moino Junior,Alcides.
The increased corn planting grown in the late season crop and the use of a notillage planting system benefits the development of Spodoptera frugiperda, the main pest of corn crop. Thus, this study aimed to select entomopathogenic nematodes based on the mortality of S. frugiperda, and to adjust the nematode concentrations in the laboratory and evaluate the action of these organisms in greenhouse conditions. Seventeen nematode populations were tested at concentrations of 100, 250, and 500 infective juveniles (IJ)/larvae. The obtained data were submitted to the polynomial regression test. In the greenhouse, corn sowing was performed in plastic buckets with soil, corn straw, and water. After 7 days, Steinernema arenarium or Heterorhabditis sp. RSC02, and the...

Tumialis,Dorota; Pezowicz,Elżbieta; Skrzecz,Iwona; Mazurkiewicz,Anna; Maszewska,Justyna; Pietraszczyk,Joanna Jarmuł; Kucharska,Kornelia.
ABSTRACT: Entomopathogenic nematodes ( Steinernematidaeand Heterorhabditidae) were studied in Polish soils according to the: season, habitat and altitude. In total, 167 soil samples were taken from 111 localities in Poland along north-south transect. Entomopathogenic nematodes were isolated from 53 soil samples (31.7%). Nematodes species were identified genetically from 16 samples, and in all other 37 samples nematodes were determined to the genus level. Three species of the genus Steinernema ( Steinernema kraussei, S. feltiae, S. carpocapsae) and one of the genus Heterorhabditis( Heterorhabditis megidis) were recorded. Steinernema feltiaewas the most common species. There was not a significant association between the occurrence of nematodes and season...

Virulence of entomopathogenic nematodes (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae) for the control of Diabrotica speciosa germar (coleoptera: chrysomelidae) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Santos,Viviane; Moino Junior,Alcides; Andaló,Vanessa; Moreira,Camila Costa; Olinda,Ricardo Alves de.
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are used in biological control of soil insects and show promise in the control of D. speciosa. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of native and exotic entomopathogenic nematode isolates in the control of D. speciosa under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Results showed that all of EPNs caused larval mortality. The most virulent were Heterorhabditis sp. RSC01 (94%), Steinernema glaseri (84%), Heterorhabditis sp. JPM04 (82%) and Heterorhabditis amazonensis RSC05 (78%). There was no effect of the Heterorhabditis sp. RSC01 and S. glaseri isolates on eggs. The maximum mortality of D. speciosa larvae by Heterorhabditis sp. RSC01 was observed at a concentration of 300 IJ/ insect, while by S. glaseri...
