Sperm ultrastructure in three different families of weakly electric fishes (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Giora,Júlia; Burns,John R..
This study presents details of sperm ultrastructure for Gymnotus aff. carapo (Gymnotidae), Eigenmannia trilineata (Sternopygidae), and three Brachyhypopomus species (B. draco, B. bombilla, and B. gauderio - Hypopomidae) from southern Brazil. Differences were found among the representatives of the different families. For example, nuclear rotation was present in E. trilineata and in the Brachyhypopomus species, but absent in Gymnotus aff. carapo, and the presence of flagellar fins was only observed in E. trilineata. Some intraspecific variations could also be noticed among the Brachyhypopomus species analyzed. Most of the characters found in the spermatozoa of the species studied herein are shared with species of Gymnotiformes previously analyzed.

Population density and habitat of an endangered cave fish Eigenmannia vicentespelaea Triques, 1996 (Ostariophysi: Gymnotiformes) from a karst area in central Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Bichuette,Maria Elina; Trajano,Eleonora.
The troglobitic electric fish Eigenmannia vicentespelaea, endemic to a single cave-system and included in the Brazilian Red List of Threatened Fauna, was studied in relation to population densities and habitat. For comparison, we used the epigean species, E. trilineata. We verify if the population densities recorded for E. vicentespelaea follow the pattern observed for other subterranean fishes; if there are seasonal fluctuations in these densities and which environmental variables explain the densities variation. We estimated abundances and population densities during three consecutive dry seasons concomitant with habitat description and physicochemical variables measurements. For E. vicentespelaea: in six stream reaches in the São Vicente II cave. For E....

Checklist of Gymnotiformes (Osteichthyes: Ostariophysi) and catalogue of primary types Neotropical Ichthyology
Ferraris Jr,Carl J.; de Santana,Carlos David; Vari,Richard P..
ABSTRACT A list of all valid names of species of Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) is presented herein. The list is arranged by family and genus and includes all available synonyms. The list is comprehensive through 2016 and includes 240 valid species distributed among 34 genera and five families, including one monotypic genus known only from the fossil record. The presented classification reflects recently published interpretations about the validity of the included names which, in general, are widely accepted. When the validity of a particular name is disputed in recent literature, we followed one of the published interpretations and provide relevant information on the alternate interpretation(s) in the remarks section of that name. Synonymies...
