Stomatal frequency and gas exchange differs in two Blechnum species (Pteridophyta, Blechnaceae) with contrasting ecological breadth Gayana Botánica
Atala,Cristian; Saldaña,Alfredo; Navarrete,Eduardo.
In Chilean temperate forest, the fern Blechnum chilense has a wide ecological breath, but occur mainly in full sun habitats, while Blechnum mochaenum is restricted only to shady sites. We evaluated if the species with different ecological breath behave similarly in their anatomical and physiological traits. Maximal photosynthetic rate (Amax), Stomatal conductance (g s), evapotranspiration (E), and SLA (specific leaf area) were measured in situ in 20 individuals of each fern species. Additionally, we estimated the stomatal density (SD), stomatal index (SI), and stomatal size in leaves of each sampled individual. B. mochaenum, the shade-tolerant species, had lower SD, SI, A, and E, and higher stomatal size and SLA than B. chilense. Higher stomatal frequency...

Physiological differences of ‘Crocantela’ lettuce cultivated in conventional and hydroponic systems Horticultura Brasileira
Souza,Priscila F de; Borghezan,Marcelo; Zappelini,Julia; Carvalho,Lara R de; Ree,Joseph; Barcelos-Oliveira,Jorge L; Pescador,Rosete.
ABSTRACT Conventional soil and hydroponic growing systems have inherent differences in water and nutritional availability. These differences may affect plant physiological development and biochemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate lettuce (Lactica sativa) cv. ‘Crocantela’development in either a hydroponic system or in soil through analyses of vegetative growth; chlorophyll abundance; and sugar and starch content. We evaluated the dry mass (DM), fresh mass (FM), number of leaves (LN), stomatal density and contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids, sugars and starch. Due to the improved nutritional conditions, especially in relation to macronutrients, plants grown in hydroponic system presented significant differences in chlorophyll a (0.4481...

Density, size and distribution of stomata in 35 rainforest tree species in Central Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Camargo,Miguel Angelo Branco; Marenco,Ricardo Antonio.
Stomata are turgor-operated valves that control water loss and CO2 uptake during photosynthesis, and thereby water relation and plant biomass accumulation is closely related to stomatal functioning. The aims of this work were to document how stomata are distributed on the leaf surface and to determine if there is any significant variation in stomatal characteristics among Amazonian tree species, and finally to study the relationship between stomatal density (S D) and tree height. Thirty five trees (>17 m tall) of different species were selected. Stomatal type, density (S D), size (S S) and stomatal distribution on the leaf surface were determined using nail polish imprints taken from both leaf surfaces. Irrespective of tree species, stomata were...

Structural changes in Psidium guajava 'Paluma' leaves exposed to tropospheric ozone Acta Botanica
Tresmondi,Fernanda; Alves,Edenise Segala.
Psidium guajava 'Paluma' has being tested as an ozone (O3) bioindicator and responds with pigmentation between the veins on the adaxial surface, due to the accumulation of phenolic compounds. These compounds act as non-enzymatic antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), formed from O3. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf structure of plants with and without visible symptoms and to establish these symptoms at the cellular level. Beside this we also aimed to detect structural changes that can minimize the effects of the O3 on the plant. The accumulation of phenolic substances, stomatal density and structural changes in P. guajava 'Paluma' leaf tissues exposed during the four seasons of the year were evaluated. The study was conducted at...

Structural analysis of Castanea sativa Mill. leaves from different regions in the tree top BABT
Pinto,Teresa Maria; Anjos,Maria do Rosário; Martins,Nuno Miguel; Gomes-Laranjo,José; Ferreira-Cardoso,Jorge; Peixoto,Francisco.
The aim of this work was to perform the histological characterization of the C. sativa leaves of three Portuguese cultivars to establish comparison among the leaves of the different quadrants in accord and with the cardinal points of the tree top and among different cultivars of this species, using light microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Measurements were also carried out for the leaf tissue thickness, stomatal density, leaf area in the four tree top quadrants. The leaves turned to the North had lesser thickness of mesophyll mainly due to lower amount of palisade parenchyma. The stomatal density was significantly lower in these leaves, unlike the leaf area that has the highest expression.

Stomatal changes induced by intermittent drought in four umbu tree genotypes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Silva,Elizamar C.; Nogueira,Rejane J. M. C.; Vale,Fernando H. A.; Araújo,Francisco P. de; Pimenta,Mariana A..
Transpiration (E), diffusive resistance (r s) and anatomical parameters were measured in plants of four grafted umbu tree genotypes (GBUs 44, 48, 50 and 68) in order to evaluate alterations induced by intermittent drought and possible genotypic variations. Transpiration measurements were taken daily until stomatal closure by withholding water. Measurements were also taken, when the plants were re-watered and the watering was interrupted again. This cycle was repeated for a period of 31 days (stress period). The control plants were also irrigated daily. A regular pattern in the stomatal opening/closing mechanism was observed throughout the watering period, exhibiting intra-specific differences. Stomatal behavior of GBU 44 and GBU 68 were influenced by air...
