Scientific Developments and the EPS-SG Scatterometer ArchiMer
Stoffelen, Ad; Aaboe, Signe; Calvet, Jean-christophe; Cotton, James; De Chiara, Giovanna; Saldana, Julia Figa; Mouche, Alexis; Portabella, Marcos; Scipal, Klaus; Wagner, Wolfgang.
The second-generation exploitation of meteorological satellite polar system (EPS-SG) C-band-wavelength scatterometer instrument (called SCA), planned for launch in 2022, has a direct heritage from the successful advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) flown on the current EPS satellites. In addition, SCA will represent three major innovations with respect to ASCAT, namely: 1) Cross polarization and horizontal copolarization; 2) a nominal spatial resolution of 25 km; and 3) 20% greater spatial coverage than ASCAT. The associated expected science and application benefits that led the SCA design are discussed with respect to ocean, land, and sea ice applications for near-real time, climate monitoring, and research purposes. Moreover, an option to implement an ocean...

Influence of storms on tidal dune mobility in the Strait of Dover ArchiMer
Le Bot, Sophie; Trentesaux, Alain; Garlan, Thierry; Berne, Serge; Chamley, Hervé.
The present paper deals with dune dynamics in a zone of the Strait of Dover located in the sea lane running into the North Sea. The dunes, widespread in this 35-m depth area, are mobile sedimentary structures (up to 40 m.yr(-1)) that culminate at a maximum of 22 m depth and endanger navigation as well as submarine man-made structures (cables, pipelines). Single- and multibeam bathymetric data, coupled with seismic data, allow us to follow dune displacements over different time scales. A net bedload parting zone has been displayed and divides the area into two parts, SE and NW. However, according to the considered time-scale, dune movements present Variations in intensity and direction. Over a long-term period (decades), sedimentary dynamics fit the...

Extreme wave activity during 2013/2014 winter and morphological impacts along the Atlantic coast of Europe ArchiMer
Masselink, Gerd; Castelle, Bruno; Scott, Tim; Dodet, Guillaume; Suanez, Serge; Jackson, Derek; Floc'H, France.
Studies of coastal vulnerability due to climate change tend to focus on the consequences of sea level rise, rather than the complex coastal responses resulting from changes to the extreme wave climate. Here we investigate the 2013/2014 winter wave conditions that severely impacted the Atlantic coast of Europe and demonstrate that this winter was the most energetic along most of the Atlantic coast of Europe since at least 1948. Along exposed open-coast sites, extensive beach and dune erosion occurred due to offshore sediment transport. More sheltered sites experienced less erosion and one of the sites even experienced accretion due to beach rotation induced by alongshore sediment transport. Storm wave conditions such as were encountered during the 2013/2014...

Discussion on storm-induced liquefaction of the superficial stratum in the Yellow River subaqueous delta. OceanDocs
Xu, Guohui; Sun, Yongfu; Yu, Yueqian; Lin, Lin; Hu, Guanghai; Zhao, Qingpeng; Guo, Xiujun.
Geological disasters on the superficial seafloor were revealed in geological investigation on the Yellow River subaqueous delta. Combined with dynamic triaxial tests and wave flume experiments, occurring conditions and forming patterns of liquefaction as well as motion of the liquefied soil were explained in this paper. Based on the viewpoint that the geological disasters were formed due to silty soil liquefaction under storm waves, re-stratification issue of the superficial stratum was analyzed. Movement of the liquefied soil agreed with the wave, leading to differentiation of the soil particles. Research issues in respect of geological, environment and engineering of storm-induced liquefaction were also discussed.

Short-term stability of estuarine benthic assemblages: are storms pattern-defining events? Rev. Bras. Zool.
Negrello Filho,Orlei A.; Lana,Paulo C..
Storms, associated with strong winds and heavy rains, are often the most severe physical disturbances in shallow coastal areas causing instability to sedimentary environments. We hypothesized herein that if storms influence short-term assemblage structure of macrofauna, then assemblages should change after storms, while remaining relatively stable over calm weather conditions. The study was conducted at the subtropical Paranaguá Bay, in southern Brazil. We selected four 700 m² sites, at the estuarine outlet, to monitor changes in number of species, number of individuals and Shannon diversity. Sampling was arranged considering the weather forecast so that both before and after conditions could be recorded. Data of each site was tested separately to access...

Impact of storms on Pliocene benthic foraminiferal assemblages of southwestern Spain Ameghiniana
González-Regalado,María Luz; Ruiz,Francisco; Abad,Manuel; Civis,Jorge; González Delgado,José Ángel; Muñoz,Juan Manuel; García,Edith Xio Mara; Pendón,José Gabriel; Toscano,Antonio.
Lithostratigraphical and faunal analyses of five Pliocene sections located in the southwestern Guadalquivir Basin (S Spain) permit reveal three main facies, which represent shallow marine fairweather conditions (FA-1), storm events (FA-2) and littoral/fluvial environments (FA-3). The vertical disposition of these facies indicates a regressive sequence. The statistical study of foraminiferal populations revealed five infralittoral and circalittoral assemblages. Vertical and horizontal variations among these assemblages, the P/B ratio and four diversity indices, together with the mollusc distributions, suggest the presence of a shallow marine palaeoenvironment in this area in the Lower Pliocene, with an increasing depth towards the southwestern. The main...

Long-term coral colonization by an excavating Caribbean sponge Boletín de Investigaciones
Marulanda-Gómez,Angela; López-Victoria,Mateo; Zea,Sven.
ABSTRACT Dead Acropora palmata branches colonized by the excavating sponge Cliona tenuis are prone to dislodgement, breakage, and translocation during heavy surge and swell from storms or hurricanes, favoring the dispersion of this sponge. At Islas del Rosario (Colombia, Caribbean), adult C. tenuis carried by A. palmata fragments that fell onto live massive corals were able to colonize the new coral, subsequently killing live tissue of the newly invaded coral. Corals that recruited onto fallen A. palmata branches overgrown with adult C. tenuis were also invaded once the sponge reached their base. To determine if the incidence of this phenomenon has increased since 2002 when it was first documented, the mode and prevalence of colonization of corals by C....
