The straits of Gibraltar and Kara Gates: a comparison of internal tides ArchiMer
Morozov, Eg; Parrilla-barrera, G; Velarde, Mg; Scherbinin, Ad.
Moored current measurements, numerical model calculations, and satellite images from the straits of Gibraltar and Kara Gates are compared. The vertical internal displacements (double amplitudes) with a semidiurnal frequency are extremely large in both straits. The displacements are related to internal tidal waves over the sills. The energy of the internal tides is transferred to an internal bore and associated wave packets of short-period internal waves. Their surface manifestation can be seen on the satellite images. Numerical modeling shows that the outflowing current from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean has a significant influence on internal tides. In the Kara Gates, the flow from the Barents Sea to Kara Sea has a similar influence. The...

Interannual variability of the Mediterranean outflow observed in Espartel sill, western Strait of Gibraltar ArchiMer
Garcia-lafuente, J.; Delgado, J.; Sanchez Roman, A.; Soto, J.; Carracedo, Lidia; Diaz Del Rio, G..
Four-year time series of observations in Espartel sill at the western part of the Strait of Gibraltar have been analyzed in order to investigate the variability of the Mediterranean outflow. It is assumed that the observed variability comes from the changing properties of the dense waters that are located at the maximum depth from where they can be uplifted in the upstream basin (Alboran Sea, inside the Mediterranean Sea) and evacuated through the strait. From this perspective, the following three mechanisms are investigated: (1) the replenishment of the deep basin by newly formed Western Mediterranean Deep Water that, depending on its density, can either uplift old resident waters or lay above them leaving in any case a cold signature in the temperature...

Vertical structure of the semidiurnal tidal currents at Camarinal Sill, the strait of Gibraltar ArchiMer
Bruno, M; Mananes, R; Alonso, Jj; Izquierdo, A; Tejedor, L; Kagan, Ba.
The dynamical mode decomposition (DMD) technique is applied to the data of currentmeter and CTD measurements taken during the 1985-1986 Gibraltar Experiment and the 1989 survey so as to clarify features of the vertical structure of the M(2) and S(2) tidal currents at the Camarinal Sill. It is shown that in conformity with the inference made on the basis of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition technique, these currents are mainly due to the M(2) and S(2) barotropic modes. At the same time the first three baroclinic modes are responsible not only for the vertical variability of the tidal currents but also for the velocity acid density amplitude variances at semidiurnal frequencies. Certain quantitative discrepancies between the values of...

The family Haleciidae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby areas Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; García, F.G.; Vervoort, W..
A faunistic study of the family Haleciidae from the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby areas has been made; seven species are described, figured and discussed. Information about the zoogeographical distribution, and conditions of substrates are contributed. A key to distinguish the species of this family from the seas of the Iberian Peninsula is presented, and the Iberian Haleciidae are compared with those from the Mediterranean and the British Isles.

The Northeastern Atlantic species Mycale micracanthoxea Buizer & Van Soest, 1977 (Porifera, Poecilosclerida) in the Strait of Gibraltar (Southern Spain) Naturalis
Carballo, J.L.; García-Gómez, J.C..
The northeastern Atlantic species Mycale micracanthoxea Buizer & Van Soest, 1977 is a component of subtidal shallow water and brackishwater harbour poles and pontoons from The Netherlands, where it grows attached to shells, barnacles, etc. It was found in similar zones and habitats of Algeciras Bay (Gibraltar Strait, southern Spain) and Isla Cristina (Huelva, southern Spain) where it is very common. This new record constitutes the southernmost limit of the geographical range of this species. This article presents some data on the anatomical variability of Mycale micracanthoxea, along with a discussion on the possible causes of its observed distribution.

Plumularian hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby areas Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; Vervoort, W..
Twenty-four species of plumularian hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar area are described and figured, including material from the coasts of southern Spain (between El Portil near the Spanish-Portuguese border and Adra, Mediterranean coast of Granada, c. 3°W) and from Ceuta in northern Africa. The geographical distribution of all species is briefly discussed and where relevant additional notes are added.

Report on the Hydroida collected by the "BALGIM" expedition in and around the Strait of Gibraltar Naturalis
Ramil, F.; Vervoort, W..
A total of 102 species and varieties of hydroids and three unidentifiable species are described or mentioned in the present report, which deals principally with hydroids collected in the IberoMoroccan Bay (and adjacent Atlantic), the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea; for revisionary purposes some additional, mainly Atlantic, material had to be included. The material described has been assigned to four families of athecate and 14 families of thecate hydroids. Nearly all species have been illustrated and a permanent slide collection has been made. Where necessary the material described has been compared with type material; ten new (sub)species are described, of which eight from the BALGIM material. Holotypes, and where necessary and/or possible...
