Holocene variations in productivity associated with changes in glacier activity and freshwater flux in the central basin of the Strait of Magellan ArchiMer
Aracena, Claudia; Kilian, Rolf; Lange, Carina B.; Bertrand, Sebastien; Lamy, Frank; Arz, Helge W.; De Pol-holz, Ricardo; Baeza, Oscar; Pantoja, Silvio; Kissel, Catherine.
One of the most important factors controlling fjord primary production in southernmost Patagonia is the variability in the thermohaline structure of the water column. In the present-day environment, thermal stratification is mostly related to freshwater input and in particular, the seasonal melting of glaciers. Here we assess whether this relation between fjord productivity and freshwater input holds true for the Holocene, using a sediment record from the central basin of the Strait of Magellan (core MD07-3132, 53°44.17′S; 70°19.03′W, 301 m). Our approach relies on a proxy-based reconstruction of fjord sea surface temperature (alkenone SST), paleosalinity, freshwater input, and paleoproductivity. The results indicate that, during the early Holocene, the...

Abundance estimation of Commerson’s dolphin in the eastern area of the Strait of Magallan-Chile RChHN
LESCRAUWAET,ANNE-CATHERINE; GIBBONS,JORGE; GUZMAN,LEONARDO; SCHIAVINI,ADRIAN.
Abundance of Commerson‘s dolphin, Cephalorhynchus commersonii (Lacépède 1804), in the eastern portion of the Strait of Magellan was estimated by means of aerial transects in autumn (June 1996). Using a helicopter at 100 m altitude and 129 km h-1, 58 sightings representing 98 animals (average group size Es = 1.7, SD = 0.13) along 818.6 km of linear transects were recorded. Data analysis with "Distance" software gave a density estimation of 0.34 ind km-2 (CV = 0.27) and a population size of 1,206 (95% CI 711-2,049 individuals). Commerson’s dolphin showed a habitat preference for the narrows, compared to open waters in the study area.

Photosynthetic responses to UV-radiation of intertidal macroalgae from the Strait of Magellan (Chile) RChHN
RAUTENBERGER,RALF; MANSILLA,ANDRÉS; GÓMEZ,IVÁN; WIENCKE,CHRISTIAN; BISCHOF,KAI.
For the first time, the photosynthetic performance of field-grown macroalgae from the Magellan Strait was evaluated with respect to their photoadaptation in the field and acclimation potential to ultraviolet radiation. Five macroalgal species were collected in the eulittoral and the upper sublittoral: Ulva intestinalis, Porphyra columbina, Adenocystis utricularis, Desmarestia confervoides and D. ligulata. Photosynthesis vs. irradiance (P-I) curves of macroalgae cultivated in the laboratory under low white light intensities more than a week were used to assess the acclimation potential to irradiance conditions in the field. Both, photosynthetic parameters referred to as maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and light saturation points of photosynthesis...

Migratory round-trip of individually identified humpback whales at the Strait of Magellan: clues on transit times and phylopatry to destinations RChHN
CAPELLA,JUAN J; GIBBONS,JORGE; FLÓREZ-GONZÁLEZ,LILIÁN; LLANO,MARTHA; VALLADARES,CARLOS; SABAJ,VALERIA; VILINA,YERKO A.
Humpback whales undertake seasonal migration between productive high-latitude areas where they feed in summer and low-latitude tropical waters where mating and calving occur during winter. In the eastern south Pacific, the species breeds off Colombia and Ecuador, and feeds primarily in the western Antarctic Peninsula and in the waters of the Strait of Magellan (SM), recently described as a new feeding ground for humpback whales. Comparison of fluke photographs of 62 individuals from the SM obtained during the austral summer from 1999 to 2005 and 1,042 individuals from Colombia, provided conclusive matches for six individuals, with an overall interchange Índex of 0.093. Eight migratory trips between summer and winter grounds were registered for four whales...
