We show the results provided by piezocone tests in determining the stratigraphic profile and the soil classification of two drilling sites in the outer shelf and the upper slope of the Gulf of Lion, PRGL2 and PRGL1, respectively. Correlations with grain-size data indicate that sleeve friction can be used for profiling fine-grained sediments (site PRGL1), whereas cone tip resistance is the most adequate for sequences made of alternations of coarse- and fine-grained intervals (site PRGL2). Normalized cone resistance and friction ratio proved to be also appropriate for soil stratigraphy as it depicts trends in the coarse fraction of the tested soil. Silts and clays present in similar proportions at site PRGL1 responded to piezocone testing as pure clays... |

The Danube Deep-Sea Fan (NW Black Sea) is one of the most developed deep-sea sediment depositional systems in Europe. Although the morphology and the architecture have been widely described in the past years, little is known about the stratigraphy of this depositional system. For the late Quaternary, this results from the lack of significant stratigraphic markers, the scarcity of radiocarbon ages and the difficulty in constraining reservoir ages. Recent robust quantification of reservoir ages has allowed the construction of a new stratigraphic framework for the Black Sea from the end of the last glacial period to the Holocene, thus giving the opportunity to correlate sedimentological and geochemical features previously described on the NW Black Sea margin... |

The Bohai Sea is a shallow sea at the east coast of China. It communicates with the Yellow Sea through a narrow strait. During and since the Late Pleistocene, the Bohai Sea has been a filled subsiding basin submitted to successive regressive-transgressive cycles. In the East Bohai Sea, a number of finger-shaped ridges are present near the strait, where tidal currents are dominant. Very-high resolution seismic reflection data have been interpreted relative to sedimentological data provided by a formerly drilled borehole. Seven seismic units are identified and correlated with the following events: units U7-U6 with the Bohai relative sea level rise (65,000–53,000 yr B.P.) and a relative sea level fall (53,000–39,000 yr B.P.); unit U5 with the Xianxian... |

In this study, detailed micropaleontological analyses were carried out on 270 samples from eight piston cores collected in the Black Sea. The primary goal was to elucidate the Late Quaternary evolution of the Black Sea, specifically to refine its biostratigraphy and to explore the Holocene paleoenvironmental changes. Three intervals were recognized in all the cores studied, irrespective of whether they were from the basin or the shelf. These intervals are characterized, from old to young, by the spotty occurrence, the presence and the local acme of Emiliania huxleyi respectively. Moreover, the species Braarudosphaera bigelowii is, in contrast to the younger units, absent in the oldest unit. The co-occurrence of the two marine species E. huxleyi and B.... |

On the basis of two sedimentary records from the central Sea of Okhotsk, we reconstruct the closely coupled glacial/interglacial changes in terrigenous flux, marine productivity, and sea ice coverage over the past 1.1 Myr. The correspondance of our sedimentary records to the China loess grain size record ( China loess particle timescale, CHILOPARTS) suggests that environmental changes in both the Sea of Okhotsk area and in SE Asia were closely related via the Siberian atmospheric high-pressure cell. During full glacial times our records point to a strong Siberian High causing northerly wind directions, the extension of the sea ice cover, and a reduced Amur River discharge. Deglacial maxima of terrigenous flux were succeeded by or synchronous to... |

High-resolution reflection and refraction seismic data were collected in 2004 to investigate, in further detail than allowed by pre-existing low resolution seismic data, the nature of a Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) that extends over a broad area of the Fairway Basin, a rifted, continental structure located on the eastern flank of the Lord Howe Rise, to the southwest of New Caledonia. Two main reflectors are documented: the shallower (RN) mimics the seafloor and has a negative polarity while the deeper (RP) does not always mimic the seafloor and has a positive polarity. Using the existing regional seismic lines, we can show that reflector RN can be continuously followed up to DSDP 208 drill hole site. Reflector RP is discontinuous and cannot be traced... |

This study presents novel findings on the Pliocene and Quaternary evolution of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea), an area recording the interaction between tectonics, climate change at a Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch timescales, and dynamic water masses exchange between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. The calibration of seismic profiles with exploration boreholes allowed for the refining the chronostratigraphic framework of the Gela Basin and highlighted the main phases of margin growth. Since the Pliocene, the margin has recorded the deposition of 100 m high shelf-edge clinothems, accompanied by sediment drifts on the slope and mass-transport deposits (MTDs), possibly triggered by seismic activity. Through the... |

The stratigraphic positions of the Wadi Dukhan and Al Uwayliah formations are reviewed. Diagnostic Maastrichtian larger foraminiferal species from the Wadi Dukhan Formation in well B7 – 41 (Cyrenaica) and in well U2 – 6 (northeastern Sirt Basin) are illustrated for the first time. These species are Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck), Siderolites cf. calcitrapoides Lamarck and Orbitoides cf. media (d’Archiac). Following the rules of nomenclature, the type section of the Al Uwayliah Formation should be considered a composite stratotype. The section east of al Uwayliah village is the holostratotype (upper part of the formation) and the Jardas al Jarrari section is the parastratotype (lower part of the formation). The combined thickness of the two component... |

A synthesis of the stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian Stage in its extended type area, that is, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), and adjacent Belgian and German territories, is presented with a brief historical overview. Quarrying activities at the large quarry complex of ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group will officially come to an end on July 1, 2018. However, the stratotype section below the Lichtenberg farmstead and directly behind the main office building at the Lage Kanaaldijk (Maastricht), will be preserved, as will various faces within the quarry complex. Strata of Maastrichtian age include the Vijlen, Lixhe 1-3 and Lanaye members of the Gulpen Formation, as well as the Valkenburg, Gronsveld, Schiepersberg, Emael, Nekum and Meerssen members of the... |

All Campanian, Maastrichtian and Danian echinoids known to date from the extended type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are listed and, with a few exceptions, also illustrated. The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of these echinoderms are documented. A total of 55 (sub)genera and 119 (sub)species (inclusive of formae), two of which are new, are recognised. A number of taxa are reassigned, while others have to remain in open nomenclature for the time being. Recorded for the first time from the area are representatives of Hagenowia and Zeuglopleurus, as well as juvenile specimens of Hemipneustes striatoradiatus. Cidaris gigas (= Temnocidaris (Stereocidaris) gigas) is accepted as a valid species. The name Cyphosoma rutoti is shown to be based on the... |
