STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN U.S. AGRICULTURE: IMPLICATIONS FOR SMALL FARMS AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Tesfa G.; Christy, Ralph D..
A descriptive analysis and a survey of literature were used in this assessment of the transformation of the structure of production agriculture. The changes in production agriculture have important implications for resource use, population distribution in rural communities, and the survival of small farms. The shifting structural change in production agriculture as a response to economic and technological adjustments is not a temporary phenomenon. The economic and natural base of agriculture will change toward greater capital intensity and concentration of ownership, and will raise public policy questions in relation to the survival of a large farm population.

The farmer as a main factor of structural change in rural area’s: examination of slovenian farmers’ characteristics, perceived opportunities and threats and strategies as part of rural development in Slovenia AgEcon
Bergevoet, Ron H.M.; Kuipers, Abele; Marija, Klopcic.
Agriculture in Slovenia is characterized by less-favourable natural and structural conditions. The degree of competitiveness of the whole agro-food sector will eventually decide whether farmers and industry will be able to compete on the EU market. Slovenian agriculture at the moment still lacks competitiveness Farmers that want to stay into business will have to further develop their farm. For farm development, besides craftsmanship and management skills increasingly entrepreneurial competencies are needed. To get insight into the entrepreneurial characteristics of Slovenian dairy farmers by investigating the opportunities and threats as perceived by farmers (external factors) to establish a future in rural Slovenia in the relation to internal factors...

A mezőgazdasági szektor nemzetgazdasági jelentősége AgEcon
Kovacs, Gabor.
A magyar mezőgazdaság valós nemzetgazdasági szerepéről többnyire nagyvonalú becsléseken alapuló adatok kerülnek nyilvánosságra.

Estimating Structural Changes in the Vertical Price Relationships in U.S. Beef and Pork Markets AgEcon
Boetel, Brenda L.; Liu, Donald J..
This paper examines structural breaks in the vertical price relationships in U.S. beef/cattle and pork/hog sectors using monthly data of the past 40 years. A major methodological issue addressed is how to estimate price relationships when data contain intermittent structural breaks with unknown break dates. The adopted procedures endogenously search for structural break dates while explicitly accounting for this search in statistical inferences. Four breaks for the beef/cattle price relationship and three breaks for the pork/hog price relationship are identified. The estimation results further confirm the importance of allowing for structural breaks in the analysis of vertical price relationships.

Factors Affecting the Impact of CAP Scenarios on Farm Structure: An Analysis Based on Stated Intentions AgEcon
Bartolini, Fabio; Viaggi, Davide.
Several authors have emphasised the effect of agricultural policy (such as SFP) as a driver of structural change. This paper aims to identify the determinants of the change in the use of productive factors under different policy scenarios. The analysis is performed ex ante, assessing the effect of CAP abolishment (as compared to the current CAP) on the use of productive factors, based on stated intentions by farmers. The results highlight the role of farm size, intensity and education in determining different patterns of reaction to policy changes. Also differences are identified among the three main component of structural change, land, capital and labour, with the latter being the less dependent upon the CAP.

INTERFIBER COMPETITION IN TEXTILE MILLS OVER TIME AgEcon
Zhang, Ping; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Ethridge, Don E..
Cotton and synthetic fiber competition in textile mills between 1961-1990 was examined using a time-varying parameter regression model. Results indicate that the structure of demand for cotton is not stable and cotton's share responses to changes in the prices of cotton and synthetic fiber vary over time. Cotton and synthetic fiber competition in textile mill use is essentially between cotton and noncellulosic fiber. Cellulosic fiver is not a cotton competitor.

On the Evolving Relationship between Corn and Oil Prices AgEcon
Elmarzougui, Eskandar; Larue, Bruno.
The relationship between corn and oil prices is not a stable one. We identified three breaks in the relationship between corn and oil prices. The first break coincides with the second oil crisis. The second break marks the end of the agricultural export subsidy war between the EU and the US in the mid 1980s while the third one occurred at the beginning of the ethanol boom at the very end of the 1990s. The relationship between corn and oil prices tends to be stronger when oil prices are highly volatile and when agricultural policies create less distortion. The ethanol boom strengthened the relation between corn and oil prices which are (were not) cointegrated in the fourth regime (first three) regime(s). Impulse response functions confirm that corn prices...

Histopathological evaluation and parasite quantification (qPCR) in the male dog's genital system after natural infection with Leishmania infantum Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Vinícius Vasconcelos Gomes de; Macedo,Simone Regina Barros de; Araújo,Flábio Ribeiro de; Ramos,Carlos Alberto do Nascimento; Ramos,Rafael Antonio Nascimento; Maia,Frederico Celso Lyra; Alves,Leucio Câmara; Silva Junior,Valdemiro Amaro da.
ABSTRACT: Canine visceral leishmaniasisis an important disease caused by the protozoon Leishmania infantum which affects several organs and systems, including the genital tract. The L. infantum tropism to the male genital system and correlation among parasite load, immunohistochemistry detection and structural changes in these organs is controversy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate this correlation in the genital organs of the male dogs naturally infected with L. infantum. Samples from testicles, epididymis, prostate, glans penis, prepuce and scrotum were collected from 19 positive adult dogs. Structural changes were observed in the testicles (5.2%), epididymis (2.6%), prepuce (5.2%) and scrotum (5.2%) of the samples positive at...
