Fire suppression in grassland systems that are adapted to episodic fire has contributed to the recruitment of woody species in grasslands worldwide. Even though the ecology of restoring these fire prone systems back to grassland states is becoming clearer, a major hurdle to the reintroduction of historic fires at a landscape scale is its social acceptability. Structural Model of Retail Market Power: The U.S. Milk Industry AgEcon

The objective of our research is to investigate retailer market conduct in the sale of beverage milk using a structural model of consumer behavior and retailer optimality conditions that embrace a range of competitive scenarios. The study is based on an aggregate level analysis of retailer behavior with milk quantity used as a strategic variable. We contribute to the literature by employing a Generalized Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (GQAIDS) to model milk demand. Furthermore, we derive the retailer optimality conditions that incorporate the slopes of inverse GQAIDS demand curves for the products under study. Standard deterministic analysis of agricultural and biofuel policies can yield incomplete or misleading results. Stochastic analysis is especially important when policies have asymmetric effects and when there is intrinsic interest in uncommon events or the distribution of possible outcomes. The paper examines four recent cases where a stochastic approach was critical to a complete and balanced examination of important US policy issues. In each case, a stochastic model of the US agricultural and biofuel sectors was used to estimate 500 sets of possible market outcomes for the 2007- 2016 period.
