Etude pluridisciplinaire en écologie lagunaire (étang de Thau, France) : stratégie d'échantillonnage et organisation spatiale du phytoplancton ArchiMer

Une étude pluridisciplinaire sur l'écologie l'étang de Thau a permis de récolter une quantité importante d'information, à quatre périodes différentes de l'année (1986-1987), sur un réseau de 63 stations réparties selon un maillage carré de 1 km. Fort de cette information multivariée nous proposons une méthodologie pour sélectionner un sous-ensemble de station (20) permettant de reproduire la répartition spatiale d'une dizaine de variables environnementales. Après cette première réflexion sur la stratégie d'échantillonnage, nous abordons en deux étapes l'étude du phytoplancton de l'étang de Thau. This study is divided in two parts; one aim is to evaluate the in situ spalio-temporal dynamics of viral communities in the Charante estuary in order to define the appropriate seasons to conduct in vitro viral enrichment experiments. These experiments, that constitute the second part of this study, were performed to assess the impact of freshwater viruses carried by the Charante River on the dynamics and composition of coastal bacterial communities. With abundance ranging from 1.4 x 107 to 208 x I07 VLPml-1. viruses are the most abundant component among plankton microorganisms in surface waters of the Charente estuary. Detecting changes in diversity in a fluctuating environment based on simulation of stochastic processes ArchiMer

In this paper, I present a method developed to detect 'extra', or novel, changes in diversity in a naturally fluctuating environment. When comparing samples in order to evaluate changes in community structure, the sampling procedure will inevitably induce randomness in observed species composition and abundance, so two samples may show considerable differences, even if they come from exactly the same community. Sometimes the effort put into the sampling varies as well, leading to the expectation of a further increase in difference. Finally, if there were a temporal distance between the samples, we would like to correct for variations in species abundance occurring naturally due to fluctuating environmental conditions.
