The influence of caffeine and thymol on the survival, growth and reproduction of Subulina octona (Brugüière, 1789) (Mollusca, Subulinidae) BABT
Ferreira,Paula; Soares,Geraldo Luiz Gonçalves; D'ávila,Sthefane; Bessa,Elisabeth Cristina de Almeida.
Subulina octona is a terrestrial snail which serves as an intermediate host for the parasites. It is also an agricultural pest. The aim of this work was to assess, during 120 days, the effects of caffeine and thymol at 2.5 g/L and 5 g/L on the hatchability, survival after hatching, growth and reproduction of S. octona under the laboratory conditions. A total of 240 eggs, 240 juveniles aged 10-day-old, and 240 aged 30-day-old were tested. The results showed that thymol (at 2.5 g/L and 5 g/L) and caffeine (at 5 g/L) acted as ovicides. In the 10-day-old juveniles, caffeine at 5 g/L caused 25% mortality and at 2.5 g/L it caused 30% mortality. Thymol at 2.5 and 5 g/L caused 20 and 22.5% mortality, respectively. In the 30-day-old juveniles, caffeine at 5 g/L...

The study of 41 individually specimes of Subulina octona (Bruguiére. 1789) during 182 days indicated that oviposition occur between 10pm and 10am. The interval between ovipositions was from seven to 31 days. In the eggs, the greatest axis was 1.5-2.0mm while the smallest was 1.2-1.6mm. The lenght of shell of recently ecloded snails was 1.3-1.8mm. The growth rale of adult snails was measured and they grew more in the first 45 days than in the last 75 days subsequent of the study.

Ocorrência de autofecundação em Subulina octona (Bruguiére) (Pulmonata, Subulinidae) sob condições de laboratório Zoologia
Bessa,Elisabeth C. de Almeida; Araújo,José Luiz de Barros.
Self-fertilization in Subulina octona (Bruguiére, 1789) was observed among 32 snails. Individually isolated for 154 days. Eggs were dctected in 38 to 50 days old snails; total number of ovipositions per snail varied from six-nine; number of eggs per cluster, one-nine and total number of eggs per snail, 16-56 during the period of study. A period of incubation of one to 15 days and a viability of 94.8% were observed for eggs layed by these isolated snails.

Moluscos de importância econômica no Brasil: II Subulinidae, Subulina octona (Bruguiére) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Stylommatophora) Zoologia
Araújo,José Luiz de B.; Bessa,Elizabeth Cristina de A..
A study of the anatomy of Subulina octona, mainly the genital and digestive systems, was undertaken in order to obtain additional data on the taxonomic position in the genus Subulina. The importance of the species as intermediate host for several helminths which occur in Brazil was also discussed.

With the purpose of investigating the biological aspects of Angiostrongylus vasorum (Baillet, 1866) Kamensky, 1905 in Subulina octona Bruguiere, 1789 experimental infections were carried out with the exposure of 90 adult molluscs to 155 L1 of the parasite/mollusc during 24 hours. The intramollus-can larval development was checked out daily through the chemical digestion of four infected molluscs and one molluscs from the control group during 21 days after infection. Until the 6th day post-infection, only Li of the parasite has been observed. On the 7th day; the presence of L2 was detected and from the 13th day on, L3 of A. vasorum also appeared. By means of larval morphometry, it has been observed that, Li had na average size of 335 x 14,5 um whereas L2...
