Effect of shoot topping intensity on 'Cabernet Franc' grapevine maturity in high-altitude region PAB
Würz,Douglas André; Marcon Filho,José Luiz; Brighenti,Alberto Fontanella; Allebrandt,Ricardo; Bem,Betina Pereira de; Magro,Maicon; Rufato,Leo; Kretzschmar,Aike Anneliese.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition of 'Cabernet Franc' grape subjected to different levels of shoot topping. The experiment was conducted in the 2008 and 2009 vintages, and the levels of shoot topping consisted of: control, without topping; and reductions of 15, 30, and 45% in total leaf area. The effect of shoot topping intensity on the chemical composition of the 'Cabernet Franc' grape berries was observed. A reduction of 26% in the vegetative canopy through a moderate shoot topping increased the total polyphenol index and the anthocyanin content. Shoot topping is a practice that must be carried out with caution, since severe shoot topping, i.e., a reduction greater than 26% of the leaf area, may negatively...

Canopy management effects on ‘Syrah’ grapevines under tropical semi-arid conditions Scientia Agricola
Leão,Patrícia Coelho de Souza; Nunes,Bruna Thaís Gonçalves; Lima,Maria Auxiliadora Coelho de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of shoot topping and leaf removal practices on vegetative vigor, yield and physicochemical characteristics of the 'Syrah' grape in the semi-arid tropical climate conditions of the São Francisco River Valley in the northeast of Brazil. The experiment was conducted over five growing cycles from 2010 to 2012 in a 'Syrah' commercial vineyard in the municipality of Casa Nova, Bahia, Brazil. Treatments consisted of leaf removal once or twice during fruit set or at the beginning of bunch closure, and one or two shoot toppings of the berry when pea-sized or 10 days after berry growth had commenced. Leaf removal and shoot topping did not affect yield, plant vigor components nor the main attributes of fruit...

Red wine phenolic composition: the effects of summer pruning and cluster thinning Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Cañón,Pablo M; González,Álvaro S; Alcalde,José A; Bordeu,Edmundo.
P.M. Cañon, A.S. González, J.A. Alcalde, and E. Bordeu. 2014. Red wine phenolic composition: the effects of summer pruning and cluster thinning. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 235-248. The quality of red wine is directly associated with its phenolic composition, which can be controlled using several viticultural techniques that affect the vegetative/productive balance of the plants, such as summer pruning and cluster thinning. However, these techniques may also involve high costs and production losses. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of summer pruning and cluster thinning on the phenolic compositions of grapes and wine over three consecutive seasons. The treatments included long (120 cm shoot length) and short (60 cm shoot length) summer pruning and 50%...
