Power Struggle in the Food Chain? Lessons from Empirical Studies on Power Influences in Chains and Marketing Channels AgEcon
Belaya, Vera; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Power plays a key role in any chain relationship. In the past large manufacturers such as Unilever and Nestle were the most dominant players in the chain. However, as a result of consolidation among retailers, power has shifted towards retailers. Nowadays such retailers as Wal-Mart, Carrefour, and Tesco are seen as powerful gatekeepers controlling the access to the end consumer. Moreover, branded manufacturers and large multinational retailers become increasingly dependent on fewer and larger suppliers who can deliver high quality products at competitive prices. Since many decades there is discussion going on about the role of power in chains and marketing channels. In order to understand how power and its interactions with other constructs in the chain...

LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGIES IN GRAIN EXPORTING AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Carlson, Donald C.E.; Dahl, Bruce L..
During the past decade, the grain shipping industry has become highly competitive and technologically advanced. These changes, along with the introduction of innovative shipping mechanisms, have made logistics management an important source of opportunity and risk for grain shippers. In this study, a stochastic simulation model was developed to evaluate the tradeoffs and effects of key variables on logistical performance in managing the grain supply chain. Average demurrage cost for the supply chain was $2.03 million with the greatest cost being for railcars and the least cost being for barges. Of the stochastic variables modeled, changes in export demand had the greatest impact on demurrage costs.

The Changes in Romanian Food Supply Chain Due to the Development of Industrial Agri- Production Systems AgEcon
Ucenic, Camelia Ioana I.; Ratiu, Claudiu I..
The primary objective of supply chain management is to fulfill customer demands through the most efficient use of resources, including distribution capacity, inventory and labor. A variety of optimizing aspects of the supply chain include acts as a go-between with suppliers to reduce bottlenecks. The sales and operation planning is becoming a requirement for doing well supply chain implementation. There are many key opportunities for improving the export and competitive performances of the sector of certified food products and eco-products. Romania has great openings for promoting and developing the ecological agriculture due to an agricultural area of 14.8 million hectares and unpolluted soils. One of the major points is to confine and maintain a greater...

Variability in Quality and Management Practices in the Mango Supply Chain from Costa Rica AgEcon
Zuniga-Arias, Guillermo; Ruben, Ruerd.
Produce quality is one of the features of any commodity that everyone has an opinion about, but quality is a complex concept. In one hand, quality is the consumer perception about a certain commodity an as well it is a relationship between all the intrinsic attributes of the commodity. It is argued that homogeneous management activities will increase the quality of the commodity. Reducing waste for example, but in a more generic way will reduce the variability of the commodity plus meeting the costumer needs and preferences. In this experimental article we try to disentangle the managerial activities that have an effect on the variability of the quality. For this purpose we have make use of the dispersion statistics...

A MODEL OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS FOR CREDENCE ATTRIBUTES AgEcon
Noelke, Corinna M.; Caswell, Julie A..
We develop a model of the impact of food quality management systems (QMS) on competitiveness and markets. QMS seek to control the quality of a product as determined by the array of individual attributes it possesses. To date only a few studies have attempted to better understand the effect of the introduction of quality management systems. No model has been introduced which captures the interactions within the supply chain and at the interface with consumers when these systems are introduced. Voluntary approaches to food safety: New insights AgEcon
Fares, M'Hand; Rouviere, Elodie.
Food safety economists have raised numerous questions according to the emergence and the multiplication of safety quality management system within the food supply chain. However, few research deal with the voluntary implementation by firms of these systems (Segerson, 1999; Venturini, 2003; Noelke- Caswell, 2000). Our paper aims to develop a unified analytical framework of these research. We obtain three results. First, in a market model when the mandatory threat is strong, the voluntary adoption of safety measures is an equilibrium without need of the cost differential assumption (Segerson, 1999) nor of a reputation effect (Venturini, 2003). Second, when the mandatory threat is weak the reputation effect and the rule of liability could induce the voluntary...

A Computer Simulation Model of Knowledge Management in Small and Medium Agri-Food Enterprises AgEcon
Martinez Soto, Moises E.; Monroy, Carlos Rodriguez; Fuentes-Pila, Joaquin; Morris Diaz, Anne; Araujo, M. Gil.
System dynamics is an appropriate tool to build management models due to its ease of application in solving unstructured problems. In the twenty-first century the sustainability of organizations is influenced by the way it manages its knowledge. In this sense, knowledge management (KM) represents a strategy that contributes to improving the production supply chain (SC) of the agri-food industry (AFI). The objective of this research is to develop a computer model to simulate the effect of KM on the production of AFI. The methodology applied was that of the system dynamics by using the Vensim PLE ® v. 5.10 software, whose determining indicators were selected through an empirical study of KM in the SC of precooked corn flour industry in Venezuela. The study...

Designing the Last Mile of the Supply Chain in Africa: Firm Expansion and Managerial Inferences from a Grocer Model of Location Decisions AgEcon
Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Ross, Anthony.
The recent interest in the expansion of retail food chains and the perceived problems resulting from competition between these new, sophisticated supply chains and the most basic of food distribution networks in emerging economies have been greatly debated in the literature. This paper is a seminal approach to examining South-South food firm (grocer) foreign direct investment by incorporating data on the informal market into a facility location decision model. There are unique environmental complexities that developing/transitioning economies present. The unique finding of this model is that informal employment patterns, in both Agricultural and non-Agricultural sectors, influence the firm’s location. Given the absence of data, South-South foreign direct...

ERFOLGSFAKTOREN IN DER WERTSCHÖPFUNGSKETTE FÜR ÖKOLOGISCHE ÄPFEL AgEcon
Zander, Katrin.

System Dynamics Simulation to Test Operational Policies in the Milk-Cheese Supply Chain. Case Study: Piar Municipality, Bolivar State, Venezuela AgEcon
Rodriguez Monroy, Carlos; Fuentes-Pila, Joaquin; Guaita, Wilfredo.
With the purpose of detecting the impact that variations of demand cause in the milk-cheese supply chain, and determining how the operational policies of capacity, inventories or labor force can mitigate this impact, a system dynamics simulation model has been designed based on a survey conducted on a sample of cheese manufacturers and their links with milk farms, transportation companies and cheese distributors. This supply chain will be consolidated when a milk center that will collect the raw milk is completed. From this center, and after adequate treatment, milk will be distributed to the different cheese manufacturers in the supply chain. Managing adequately the milk-cheese supply chain represents an important challenge due to the short life of these...
