A global wave parameter database for geophysical applications. Part 1: Wave-current-turbulence interaction parameters for the open ocean based on traditional parameterizations ArchiMer
Rascle, N; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Queffeulou, Pierre; Croize-fillon, Denis.
Ocean surface mixing and drift are influenced by the mixed layer depth, buoyancy fluxes and currents below the mixed layer. Drift and mixing are also functions of the surface Stokes drift U, volume Stokes transport T-s, a wave breaking height scale H-swg, and the flux of energy from waves to ocean turbulence Phi(oc). Here we describe a global database of these parameters, estimated from a well-validated numerical wave model, that uses traditional forms of the wave generation and dissipation parameterizations, and covers the years 2003-2007. Compared to previous studies, the present work has the advantage of being consistent with the known physical processes that regulate the wave field and the air-sea fluxes, and also consistent with a very large number of...

Field determination of the leeway of drifting objects ArchiMer
Allen, Arthur; Roth, Jens-christian; Maisondieu, Christophe; Breivik, Oyvind; Forest, Bertrand.
The leeway (windage) of five typical SAR/HAZMAT objects (person in water, mine, small sailboat, small open boat and a 20-ft container) and is studied. The method is applicable to objects smaller than 30m

The leeway of shipping containers at different immersion levels ArchiMer
Breivik, Oyvind; Allen, Arthur A.; Maisondieu, Christophe; Roth, Jens-christian; Forest, Bertrand.
The leeway of 20-ft containers in typical distress conditions is established through field experiments in a Norwegian fjord and in open-ocean conditions off the coast of France with a wind speed ranging from calm to 14 m s(-1). The experimental setup is described in detail, and certain recommendations were given for experiments on objects of this size. The results are compared with the leeway of a scaled-down container before the full set of measured leeway characteristics are compared with a semianalytical model of immersed containers. Our results are broadly consistent with the semianalytical model, but the model is found to be sensitive to choice of drag coefficient and makes no estimate of the crosswind leeway of containers. We extend the results from...
