SOWS AND PIGLETS THERMAL COMFORT: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE TILES USED IN THE FARROWING HOUSING REA
Machado,Sivanilza T.; Nääs,Irenilza De A.; Reis,João G. M. Dos; Caldara,Fabiana R.; Santos,Rodrigo C..
ABSTRACT The global animal production is increasing as expected to meet world demand for food, especially for meat products. This research aimed to investigate the effect of two types of roofs (clay and fiber-cement tiles) in a tropical area on the thermal comfort of farrowing sows and piglets. Twelve sows and forty-eight piglets were observed during summer in the Southeast region of Brazil. Climate variables, thermal comfort and surface temperature (sows and piglets) were assessed. The type of roofs clearly affected the piglets' surface temperature during all studied periods, but the results were not similar in the sows' surface temperature. Temperature and humidity index found was high in the building with fiber-cement tiles. The pen location in the...

The impact of evaporative cooling on the thermoregulation and sensible heat loss of sows during farrowing REA
Justino,Eliene; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Carvalho,Thayla M. R.; Neves,Diego P.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro.
Pigs are more sensitive to high environmental temperatures explained by the inability of sweating and panting properly when compared to other species of farmed livestock. The evaporative cooling system might favor the thermal comfort of animals during exposure to extreme environmental heat and reduce the harmful effects of heat stress. The purpose of this study was to assess the sensible heat loss and thermoregulation parameters from lactating sows during summer submitted to two different acclimatization systems: natural and evaporative cooling. The experiment was carried out in a commercial farm with 72 lactating sows. The ambient variables (temperature, relative humidity and air velocity) and sows physiological parameters (rectal temperature, surface...

THE TYPOLOGY OF BROILER HOUSE AND THE IMPACT IN THE LOCOMOTION OF BROILERS REA
Garcia,Rodrigo G.; Lima,Nilsa D. da S.; Naas,Irenilza de A.; Caldara,Fabiana R.; Sgavioli,Sarah.
ABSTRACT The large majority of broiler houses use two types of systems: dark-house system - DHP, and tunnel with curtain system - ATC. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association and the prevalence of locomotion issues in the broiler commercial farming systems (DHP and ATC). For assessing the thermal environment and the litter quality, a completely random design was adopted using two factors (broiler houses, DHP and ATC) with 12 repetitions. To study the surface temperature of the broiler breast, and the locomotion ability (gait score) a completely randomized design was adopted in a double factorial scheme 2 × 2 (two houses typology vs. sex) with 24 repetitions. To verify whether the type of house and the sex were associated to...

Evaluation of thermorregulatory capacity of dairy buffaloes using infrared thermography REA
Sevegnani,Kelly B; Fernandes,Danielle P. B; Silva,Silvia H. Modenese-Gorla da.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermoregulatory response of dairy buffaloes in pre-milking and post-milking. To identify animal thermoregulatory capacity, skin surface temperatures were taken by an infrared thermometer (SST), a thermographic camera (MTBP) as well as respiratory rate records (RR). Black Globe and Humidity Index (BGHI), radiating thermal load (RTL) and enthalpy (H) were used to characterize the thermal environment. Artificial Neural Networks analyzed those indices as well as animal physiological data, using a single layer trained with the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. The results indicated that pre-milking and post-milking environments reached BGHI, RR, SST and MTBP values above thermal neutrality zone for...

Insights into decadal North Atlantic sea surface temperature and ocean heat content variability from an eddy-permitting coupled climate model ArchiMer
Moat, B. I.; Sinha, B.; Josey, S. A.; Robson, J.; Ortega, P.; Sévellec, Florian; Holliday, N. P.; Mccarthy, G. D.; New, A. L.; Hirschi, J. J.-m..
An ocean mixed layer heat budget methodology is used to investigate the physical processes determining subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) variability on decadal-multidecadal timescales using the state-of-the-art climate model HadGEM3-GC2. New elements include development of an equation for evolution of anomalous SST for interannual and longer timescales in a form analogous to that for OHC, parameterization of the diffusive heat flux at the base of the mixed layer and analysis of a composite AMOC event. Contributions to OHC and SST variability from two sources are evaluated i) net ocean-atmosphere heat flux and ii) all other processes, including advection, diffusion and entrainment for SST. Anomalies in...

Impact of barrier layer on winter-spring variability of the southeastern Arabian Sea ArchiMer
Masson, S; Luo, Jj; Madec, G; Vialard, Jerome; Durand, F; Gualdi, S; Guilyardi, E; Behera, S; Delecluse, P; Navarra, A; Yamagata, T.
In the present study, we use a coupled model to evaluate the effect of shallow salinity stratification on the sea surface temperature (SST) and on the monsoon onset in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS). A 100-year control experiment shows that the coupled model reproduces the main climatic features in this region in terms of SST, precipitation and barrier layer (BL). A 100-year sensitivity experiment (where BL effects have been suppressed in the SEAS) shows that BL enhances the spring SST warming by 0.5 degrees C, and leads to a statistically significant increase of precipitation in May (3 mm/day) linked to an early (10 to 15 days) monsoon onset. This suggests that the BL extent may be a useful predictor of the summer monsoon onset in the area with a...

The THAUMEX measurement campaign, carried out during the summer of 2011 in Thau, a coastal lagoon in southern France, focused on episodes of marine breezes. During the campaign, three intensive observation periods (IOPs) were conducted and a large amount of data were collected. Subsequently, standalone modelling using the FLake lake model was used, first to assess the surface temperature and the surface energy balance, and second to determine the energy budget of the water column at the measurement site. Surface fluxes were validated against in situ measurements, and it was determined that heat exchanges are dominated by evaporation. We also demonstrated that the model was sensitive to the light extinction coefficient at Thau, due to its shallowness and...

A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

Características de la red de cerco "tipo lámpara" y algunos comentarios sobre la flota que la utiliza en la pesca de caballa. OceanDocs
Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J..
The composition of the fleet is analyzed. The boats range 50-200 HP of engine and have 9-16 m in length overall. Most of the boats have been improving their equipment (echosounders, new engines) since 1980. An inverse relationship was found between sea surface temperature and CPUE as measured by mackerel catch permit time spent on fishing gounds. Yields are negligible over 20°C with a optimum of 20°C.

An Ocean Theme for the IGOS Partnership OceanDocs
The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. Recognising that other themes will emerge, the “Ocean Theme” was chosen to be the “pathfinder” in this approach and an Ocean Theme Team was assembled to formulate guidance. One goal of the Ocean Theme Team is to consider and study the full range of current and planned observations, while identifying potential gaps in future observations that might compromise ocean observational records. This document presents a proposed set of long-term ocean observations and identifies a number of challenges for the improvement of knowledge about both the oceans and observing techniques. The overall strategy is to create an observing...

An Assessment of Urban Heat Island Effect using Remote Sensing Data. OceanDocs
Wang, Guiling; Jiang, Weimei; Wei, Ming.
Characteristics of urban heat island (UHI) effect and its cause are investigated by using MODIS data in April 2004. Surface parameters from the MODIS data have surface temperature (ts), albedo(a), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Their heterogeneities over urban and rural area are analyzed based on land cover classification, and their relations are also presented in order to explain the UHI effect. The results show that there exists obvious the UHI effect. Ts over urban areas are by 10.83 % higher than those over rural area, and NDVI and a over urban area are by 62 % and 18.75 % less than those over rural area, respectively. Surface temperature has significantly negative correlation with NDVI and their correlation coefficient is -0.73....

Guide to operational procedures for the collection and exchange of oceanographic data (bathy and tesac) OceanDocs
All nations are profoundly influenced by the world oceans in many ways - some direct and obvious, others indirect and more subtle. Even those countries without ocean coastline feel the influence of the ocean, for example, as it affects world-wide weather and climate and In the availability of foreign goods and access to distant markets. Some influences of the ocean are benefitial; others may be detrimental to human activities ; most are beyond our ability to control, except in very limited ways, but, forewarned with a knowledge of the state of the ocean and even a limited prediction of future trends, it may often be possible to maximize the beneficial effects and to avoid or guard effectively against those which could be detrimental. The Integrated Global...

Beneficio económico de la caballa (Scomber japonicus) con relación a la temperatura superficial del mar en el área de Mar del Plata. OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The temperature that limits the presence of schools of Argentine chub mackerel Scomber japonicus was found to be around 19°C in the Mar del Plata area Buenos Aires prov., Argentina. At higher values, most shoals leave coastal waters in direction to the mid-shelf. An inverse relationship was observed between catches per unit of effort CPUE and sea surface temperature. The highest CPUE values corresponded to temperatures lower than 19°C. Beyond that value, the possibility of obtaining a CPUE higher than the unit is nearly null and the low standard deviation means it is unlikely to reach high CPUE values. The economic profit per minute of each daily cruise was estimated using a case study carried out with a single vessel pilot with mean structural and...
