The effects of salinity on growth and survival of mangrove seedlings changes with age Acta Botanica
Kodikara,Kodikara Arachchilage Sunanda; Jayatissa,Loku Pullukuttige; Huxham,Mark; Dahdouh-Guebas,Farid; Koedam,Nico.
ABSTRACT Six wide-ranging mangrove species, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia marina, A. officinalis, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and B. sexangula, were selected to study the growth and survival of seedlings under three contrasting salinity treatments over a 30-week period: low (3-5psu), moderate (15-17psu) and high (33-36psu). Seedlings grown under high salinity exhibited significantly lower performance (p<0.05) in survival rates, cumulative shoot height, mean growth rates, mean total leaf area, and mean dry weight, compared to those under low and moderate salinity regimes. The low salinity treatment provided the best conditions for initial establishment and growth of the seedlings of all species until 15-20 weeks of age. However, the same...

Ewe maternal behavior score to estimate lamb survival and performance during lactation Animal Sciences
Moraes, Andreia Barros de; Poli, Cesar Henrique Espírito Candal; Fischer, Vivian; Fajardo, Neuza Maria; Aita, Marta Farias; Porciuncula, Gabriela Caillava da.
Mortality of perinatal lambs and low weight at weaning cause huge liabilities to farmers. Current study describes maternal-filial behavior and evaluates the use of maternal behavior score (MBS) to estimate the behavior of ewes and lambs soon after birth, and correlate it with lamb mortality and performance during lactation. Thirty-seven Corriedale ewes were used in a completely randomized design. MBS was assessed up to 24 hours after birth, taking into consideration the distance of the ewe from the lamb at the approach of a person. Maternal behavior, placental weight, weight gain of the lambs until weaning and their survival rate were also evaluated until two hours after lambing. More than 90% of the ewes had adequate maternal behavior, with parental care,...

Longo, Ricardo da Silva; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Nuñer, Alex Pires de Oliveira; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of water temperature during fertilization and egg incubation in the determination of the sex ratio of fingerlings of silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. Water temperatures of 19, 25 and 30°C were used during the egg fertilizations, and the eggs were then incubated at temperatures of 19, 25 or 30°C for each fertilization temperature condition. An increase in temperature reduced the fertilization rate of R. quelen, while the final number of fish was reduced when a lower temperature was used during egg incubation. The temperatures of fertilization and incubation that were tested did not alter the sex ratio.

PAES,JOÃO P.P.; LIMA,VICTOR L.S.; PRATISSOLI,DIRCEU; CARVALHO,JOSÉ R.; PIROVANI,VICTOR D.; BUENO,REGIANE C.O.F..
Abstract In this study, the effect of temperature on the growth of the European pepper moth, Duponchelia fovealis (Zeller), was assessed at five constant temperatures (18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 °C). The European pepper moth was observed to complete its developmental stages (from egg to adult) at all the temperatures evaluated. From the results, it was evident that temperature affected the rate and development time of all the growth stages, to a significant degree. The length in time of the embryonic, larval, pupal and total (egg-adult) stages was observed to drop as the temperature rose from 18 to 24 °C, but remained constant between 27 and 30 °C. The developmental time in the pre-pupal stage dropped between 18 and 30 °C. The European pepper moth takes 454...

Clinical utility of a life quality score in dogs with canine transmissible venereal tumor treated by vincristine chemotherapy Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Valladão,M.L.; Scarpelli,K.C.; Metze,K..
The clinical utility of a life quality score during vincristine chemotherapy of dogs with canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) was investigated using 93 tumor-bearing dogs in this prospective study. At diagnosis, clinical data and the performance status were evaluated according to a modified Karnofsky score (CKS) adapted for dogs. The animals were treated with vincristine sulphate (0.025mg/kg) at weekly intervals until the tumor had macroscopically disappeared. The time until the first adverse event and death were recorded. In a pilot study, CKS revealed a high inter-observer concordance (kappa=0.735; weighted kappa=0.835). CKS permitted a detailed monitoring of adverse effects during therapy. Cox regressions showed that low performance score and...

Morato-Fernandes,J.; Tavares,R.A.; Rocha,C. B.; Pouey,J.L.O.F.; Piedras,S.R.N..
Pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) is a native species from Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and Argentina where it is of great economic importance for artisanal fishing. One difficulty in laboratory research with pejerrey is related to its sensitivity, as it presents higher basal cortisol levels than other freshwater species. For this reason, the aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of benzocaine and clove oil as anesthetics for pejerrey fingerlings. Two experiments were done where fingerlings (57±7.8mm and 1.1±0.44g) were exposed to benzocaine with concentrations between 40mgL-1 and 120mgL-1 and to clove oil with concentrations between 12mgL-1 and 75mgL-1. Survival, anesthesia induction time and recovery time for each pharmaceutics were evaluated....

Survival and growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Pisces - Pimelodidae) larvae: effect of photoperiod Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Campagnolo,R.; Nuñer,A.P.O..
The survival and the growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans larvae exposed to four photoperiods: light:dark (LD) 0:24, LD 10:14, LD 14:10, and LD 24:0, in a brackish water (5‰) culture were analyzed. Larvae were fed with Artemia sp. nauplii at a 500 nauplii/larvae/day ratio. Survival on day 5 was inversely related to the length of photoperiod. From days 5 to 10, intermediate photoperiods resulted in a better survival, although LD 0:24 and LD 14:10 resulted in similar survival on day 10. Larvae presented higher weight at intermediate photoperiods. The results suggested that photoperiod requirements shifted during early development of P. corruscans larvae.

Association of Sea Surface Temperature and the abundance of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster) according to the state of development in the Gorgona National Natural Park Boletín de Investigaciones
Perlaza-Gamboa,Alejandro; Giraldo,Alan; Payán,Luis Fernando; Estela,Felipe A..
ABSTRACT Variation in the physicochemical conditions of the sea can influence the distribution and abundance of seabirds by affecting the trophic structure of the pelagic environment. For this reason, we aimed to evaluate the association between the abundance of three developmental stages (chicks, juveniles, and adults) of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster etesiaca) and the sea surface temperature (SST) and its thermal anomaly (ANOM) in Gorgona Island, Colombian Pacific. These trends were assessed by performing cross-correlations and generalized linear models. Each developmental stage showed a different abundance tendence linked to SST and ANOM variation. It is suggested that these trends are due to the fact that increased sea temperature may be associated...

Survival of AIDS patients and characteristics of those who died over eight years of highly active antiretroviral therapy, at a referral center in northeast Brazil BJID
Melo,Ladjane Santos Wolmer de; Lacerda,Heloisa Ramos; Campelo,Eduardo; Moraes,Emanuel; Ximenes,Ricardo Arraes de Alencar.
Introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy has resulted in a significant reduction in morbimortality and significant changes in the causes of death among HIV/AIDS patients. For this reason, it has become essential to monitor survival and causes of death. We constructed a survival curve based on 597 adult patients notified as AIDS cases between 1997 and 2004, at the Hospital das Clínicas, Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. Among those patients, 150 (25%) progressed to death by December, 2005. Of these, 119 were studied in detail. The data were collected from notification files of the State Health Department and the State Mortality Information System, and were complemented by analysis of medical records. These 597 patients had a...
