Certifying the commons: eco-certification, privatization, and collective action Ecology and Society

We examine new dynamics of privatization and collective action in common pool resource situations facilitated by the nonstate multistakeholder institutions of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the global leader in sustainability certification for wild caught seafood. Through a review of the literature and two case studies of fishing cooperatives in Baja California Sur, Mexico and on Fogo Island in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), we advance two interrelated arguments. Solving the Problem of Sustainable Use of Bt Crops AgEcon

Transgenic plants producing insecticidal protein derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been widely adopted since their commercial introduction in 1996. The widespread adoption of such plants has reduced use of conventional insecticides while attaining yield gains, thus providing economic, environmental and human health benefits. However, the benefits from Bt crops will be reduced or even eliminated if pests develop resistance to these toxins so that Bt crops are less or no longer effective. Valuations of ‘Sustainably Produced’ Labels on Beef, Tomato, and Apple Products AgEcon

This study evaluates consumer perceptions of what “sustainably produced” food labels imply and estimates corresponding demand for products carrying these labels. Results suggest that the typical U.S. consumer is not willing to pay a positive premium for beef, tomatoes, or apple products labeled as “sustainably produced.” Demand is particularly sensitive to inferences consumers make regarding what a “sustainably produced” food label implies. Suggestions for future work and implications of standardizing the definition of sustainability are provided.

An inter-sectoral economic model for optimal sustainable mangrove use in the small island economy of Tonga AgEcon

The dependency of small island economies on natural resources coupled with the pubic nature of these resources means that sustainability is a topical issue especially when development projects offer opportunities for "better living" for communities. For a mangrove dependent community of Pangaimotu in Vavau in Tonga tourism development offers better income from employment opportunities. Yet reclaiming mangrove areas for tourism development is likely to impact on fisheries resources that have traditionally been the main form of livelihood for the community. It is argued that for small island communities, whenever development activities ignore the critical role of mangroves on fisheries resources, the wider implications to the community are also overlooked....
