Global marine primary production constrains fisheries catches ArchiMer
Chassot, Emmanuel; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Dulvy, Nicholas K.; Melin, Frederic; Watson, Reg; Gascuel, Didier; Le Pape, Olivier.
Primary production must constrain the amount of fish and invertebrates available to expanding fisheries; however the degree of limitation has only been demonstrated at regional scales to date. Here we show that phytoplanktonic primary production, estimated from an ocean-colour satellite (SeaWiFS), is related to global fisheries catches at the scale of Large Marine Ecosystems, while accounting for temperature and ecological factors such as ecosystem size and type, species richness, animal body size, and the degree and nature of fisheries exploitation. Indeed we show that global fisheries catches since 1950 have been increasingly constrained by the amount of primary production. The primary production appropriated by current global fisheries is 17-112% higher...

Defining viable recovery paths toward sustainable fisheries ArchiMer
Martinet, Vincent; Thebaud, Olivier; Doyen, L.
This paper develops a formal analysis of the recovery process for a fishery, from crisis situations to desired levels of sustainable exploitation, using the theoretical framework of viable control. We define sustainability as a combination of biological, economic and social constraints which need to be met for a viable fishery to exist. Biological constraints are based on the definition of a minimum resource stock to be preserved. Economic constraints relate to the existence of a guaranteed profit per vessel. Social constraints refer to the maintenance of a minimum size of the fleet, and to the maximum speed at which fleet adjustment can take place. Using fleet size adjustment and fishing effort per vessel as control variables, we first identify the states...

Management Issues for the Sustainable Use of Lagoon Fish Resources OceanDocs
Entsua-Mensah, M.; Ofori-Danson, P.K.; Koranteng, K.A..
Coastal lagoons form an integral part of marine fisheries and provide important spawning and nursery grounds for many fish species. The economic contributions of lagoon fisheries have not been given adequate consideration by fisheries authorities. Ghana's 550-km coastline includes over 90lagoons. These lagoons and their wetlands provide valuable products and services, which include supporting the fisheries, absorbing floodwaters and protecting biodiversity. They also serve as roosting, nesting and feeding sites for many species of birds. Through the support of the World Bank and the Global Environmental Facility, Ghana has designated five coastal wetland areas as Ramsar sites due to their importance as fishing areas and as roosting, nesting and feeding...

Genetic characterization of West African populations of Sarotherodon melanotheron (Teleostei, Cichlidae) OceanDocs
Falk, T.M.; Teugels, G.G.; Abban, E.K..
In this study, material from 18 localities all over the distribution range of the species (Trewavas and Teugels 1991) was examined. Allozyme, hemoglobin and globin chain variations were analyzed comparatively. Data were subjected to phenetic and cladistic analyses. Morphometric variations were studied at the Musee Royale de I' Afrique Centrale, Belgium.

Niger: Bringing Fishing Communities Out of Poverty OceanDocs
Talatou, H.; Soumana, A..
The fisheries sector in Niger is an important component of rural development. Its contribution to the national economy and poverty alleviation is significant. However, the sector is still either marginalised or ignored when development and poverty alleviation policies are drawn up and other public policies implemented. In the run-up to the National Partners’ Forum on the Poverty Reduction Strategy, a national discussion workshop on fisheries was felt to be an urgent need so the Niger National Coordination Unit organized one at the beginning of June 2003.

An Economic Analysis to Sustainable Fisheries Management OceanDocs
Lokina, R.B..
The coastal zone is a dynamic area surrounding the interface between land and sea. The coastal area and its resources offer great benefits and opportunities for human use. Most coastal activities in Tanzania rely on the natural resources that the coast offers (fishing, forestry, agriculture, tourism, mining, salt production mariculture etc). Therefore the condition of the coastal ecosystem and social well being are closely linked. The challenge is to maintain and improve the resources base on which those activities are dependent, while developing new economic opportunities in a way that benefits the people of the coast and the nation as a whole. A major constraint is the inadequate institution and legal framework for coastal management. Economics is about...
