XXI Science for life: agrosystems and sustainable production. Infoteca-e
The agricultural engineer Luís Henrique Bassoi states that agriculture is not the villain of the water crisis, as it is sometimes considered, and presents data on irrigation and water management; Sustainable intensification is a viable alternative so that humankind can continue producing food and reaching record yield rates, preserving the environment and reducing the effects of its actions on the planet. Details can be seen in this special article; Elephant grass can be used as an input material for boilers, generates energy and confirms its potential as a raw material for cellulosic ethanol; Plants, animals and microorganisms can be used as biological factories for the production of high added-value molecules that positively impact treatments against...

Sustainable Energy Crop Production: A Case Study for Sugarcane and Cassava Production in Yunnan, China AgEcon
Zhang, Yu; Ni, Jianhong; Zhang, Sizhu.
The possibility of using biomass as a source of energy in reducing the greenhouse-effect imposed by carbon dioxide emission and relieving energy crisis is a matter of great interest, such as bioethanol production. Nevertheless, the cultivation of dedicated energy crops dose meet with some criticisms (conflict with food security and environmental degradation, for example). Nowadays sugarcane and cassava are regarded as the potential energy crops for bioethanol production. Endowed with natural resources and favorable weather condition, Yunnan province, China, is the major sugarcane and cassava production area in China. This paper presents production structures of these two crops in Yunnan and compares the sustainable production between the usages of...

Feeding is one of the major factors that influences the growth and development of animals, justifying thus the present experiment that analyzed the effect of the number of feeding environments on the performance of bullfrog tadpoles through the growth (weight and length) and performance (food remains, average feed intake, average weight gain, and feed conversion). The treatments consisted of subunits of two, four, and eight feeding environments in the experimental units at disposal for the tadpole population, and one without subdivisions, comprising a single environment, during 60 experimental days. The design was completely randomized, with four treatments and three replications. The values were tested using an analysis of variance and Duncan test (α =...

Dynamics of solar radiation and soybean yield in agroforestry systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARON,BRAULIO O.; SGARBOSSA,JAQUELINE; SCHWERZ,FELIPE; ELLI,ELVIS F.; ELOY,ELDER; BEHLING,ALEXANDRE.
Abstract Soybean (Glycine max L.) monocropping have had a great socio-economic and environmental impact on the world and agroforestry systems has been considered an alternative for more sustainable production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different arrangements of agroforestry systems of the species E. urophylla x E. grandis and P. dubium and the pruning of the trees on the dynamics of solar radiation and soybean yield. A field experiment was conducted in Southern Brazil. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the solar radiation transmissivity and the productive performance of the soybean were evaluated. In this study, the soybean yield was determined by the arrangement of the agroforestry system and forest species...
