Ethanol production from sweet sorghum juice under very high gravity conditions: Batch, repeated-batch and scale up fermentation Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Nuanpeng,Sunan; Laopaiboon,Lakkana; Srinophakun,Penjit; Klanrit,Preekamol; Jaisil,Prasit; Laopaiboon,Pattana.
Batch ethanol fermentations from sweet sorghum juice by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NP 01 were carried out in a 500 ml air-locked Erlenmeyer flask under very high gravity (VHG) and static conditions. The maximum ethanol production efficiency was obtained when 9 g l-1 of yeast extract was supplemented to the juice. The ethanol concentration (P), productivity (Qp) and yield (Yp/s) were 120.24 ± 1.35 g l-1, 3.01 ± 0.08 g l-1 h-1 and 0.49 ± 0.01, respectively. Scale up ethanol fermentation in a 5-litre bioreactor at an agitation rate of 100 rev min-1 revealed that P, Qp and Yp/s were 139.51 ± 0.11 g l-1, 3.49 ± 0.00 g l-1 h-1 and 0.49 ± 0.01, respectively, whereas lower P (119.53 ± 0.20 g l-1) and Qp (2.13 ± 0.01 g l-1 h-1) were obtained in a 50-litre bioreactor....

Production Profitability of Ethanol from Alternative Feedstocks in the Texas Panhandle AgEcon
Almas, Lal K.; Lust, David G.; Brooks, Kathleen R.; Girase, J.R..
The potential of three feedstocks: grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass for ethanol production in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle Region is analyzed using yield and production costs of feedstock, processing cost of feedstock, final demand for ethanol, farm to wholesale marketing margin, and the derived demand price of feedstock. The calculated economic returns per acre of grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass are -$45.37, -$410.19, and -$150.17 respectively under irrigated condition and -$38.25, -$145.09, and -$29.04 respectively under dryland condition. The evaluation in this study demonstrates that ethanol production from grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass in the Texas Panhandle Region is not economically...

Breaking into the Cellulosic Ethanol Market: Capacity and Storage Strategies AgEcon
Darby, Paul M.; Mark, Tyler B.; Salassi, Michael E..
This paper examines the possibilities of breaking into the cellulosic ethanol market in south Louisiana via strategic feedstock choices and the leveraging of the area’s competitive advantages. A small plant strategy is devised whereby the first-mover problem might be solved, and several scenarios are tested using Net Present Value analysis.

Farmers’ Willingness to Grow Sweet Sorghum as a Cellulosic Bioenergy Crop: A Stated Choice Approach AgEcon
Bergtold, Jason S.; Fewell, Jason E.; Williams, Jeffery R..
Biofuel production must increase to 36 billion gallons by the year 2022, according to government mandates. The majority of this fuel must be produced from “advanced” or second-generation biofuel feedstocks after 2015. Advanced biofuel feedstocks include annual crops such as sweet sorghum. Kansas farmers are poised to be major producers of sweet sorghum for biofuels. A stated choice survey was administered to Kansas farmers to assess their willingness to grow sweet sorghum for biofuels under various contracting scenarios. Results show that farmers are willing to grow biomass for bioenergy under contract and that insurance availability plays an important role in their decision.

Test was done at the Khao Hin Son Research Station, Chachoengsao province during the dry season November 2008-March 2009, the main plots were 4 sweet sorghum varieties (SW1001, SW1002, SW1005 and SW1008) and the sub plots were 4 irrigation frequencies (every 7, 10, 14 and 21 days, four different water amounts 35, 50, 70 and 105 mm, repectively). The results illustrated that sweet sorghum varieties and irrigation frequencies did affect days to flowering, plant height, fresh weight, amount of juice and amount of juice/ton cane. SW1005 gave the greatest amount of juice per 1 ton fresh weight (498 kgs) while SW1008 yielded the lowest (432 kgs). Sweet sorghum grown under the most frequent irrigation (every 7 days) gave the highest juice/ton cane (806 kgs)...

Thai Agricultural
Thamrongsilpa Pothisoong; Somchai Piyapanthawanon; Tawil Nilpayak.
Improvement of non restorer lines (B-line) of sweet sorghum was carried out at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pakchong district, Nakhonratchasima province during 2005-2009 for 10 seasons, aimed to improve their yield components by backcrossing method for 3 generations and followed by 4 generations of pedigree selection. For pedigree selection procedure, line selection was compared to family selection method. In late rainy season 2009, it was found that 40 non restorer lines of sweet sorghum were selected from the line selection method. They had 54-62 days to flowering, 136-298 cm of plant height, 12-14 leaves per plant, 18-30 cm of panicle length, 10.1-15.8 percent brix of sweetness, 17-22 mm of stem diameter, 2.0-3.0 leaf diseases score,...

Energy analysis of three energy crops in Greece CIGR Journal
Gemtos, T. A.; Cavalaris, C.; Tagarakis, A.; Fountas, S..
To assess the potential of energy crops to provide a stock material for biofuel production three crops (rapeseed, sunflower and sweet sorghum) were studied in field experiments in Thessaly, Central Greece in 2007 and 2008.  The cropping activities were recorded.  Energy analysis was carried out to assess benefits from the crops.  Power requirements and energy consumption during field operations were measured directly using instrumented tractors.  Literature data was used for the energy sequestered to the inputs of the system (indirect energy).  Energy budgets were produced taking into account as output either the seed or including the stalks for the two oil seed crops.  The results showed that in all cases positive energy balances were achieved.  Analysis...

Ethanol production from sweet sorghum by Saccharomyces cerevisiae DBKKUY-53 immobilized on alginate-loofah matrices BJM
Nuanpeng,Sunan; Thanonkeo,Sudarat; Klanrit,Preekamol; Thanonkeo,Pornthap.
Abstract Ethanol production from sweet sorghum juice (SSJ) using the thermotolerant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain DBKKUY-53 immobilized in an alginate-loofah matrix (ALM) was successfully developed. As found in this study, an ALM with dimensions of 20 × 20 × 5 mm3 is effective for cell immobilization due to its compact structure and long-term stability. The ALM-immobilized cell system exhibited greater ethanol production efficiency than the freely suspended cell system. By using a central composite design (CCD), the optimum conditions for ethanol production from SSJ by ALM-immobilized cells were determined. The maximum ethanol concentration and volumetric ethanol productivity obtained using ALM-immobilized cells under the optimal conditions were 97.54...
