Silveira, Hebert; Rodrigues, Letícia Mendonça; Amaral, Leticia Gomes de Morais; Cerqueira, Luís Gustavo dos Santos; Philomeno, Renato; Cantarelli, Vinícius de Souza.
The aim of this study was to determine the values of apparent digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) for crude glycerin derived of biodiesel based on pork fat for finishing pigs. The diets consisted of a basal diet and four levels of crude glycerin (0, 5, 10 and 15%). Twelve pigs were housed individually in metabolic cages and after seven days of adaptation, total collections of urine and feces for four consecutive days were performed. Gross energy (GE) of crude glycerin, diets, urine and fecal samples from each animal was determined. The crude glycerin used in this experiment presented 74.74% glycerin and 6,500 kcal kg-1 gross energy. The values of digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) were estimated by difference in the DE,...

Design and validation of a mobile air filter testing laboratory for animal agricultural applications CIGR Journal
Smith, Benjamin; Ramirez, Brett; Hoff, Steven; Harmon, Jay; Stinn, John.
The US swine industry is shifting towards filtered fresh-air ventilation systems that use pleated filters to improve breeding herd health and reduce airborne disease outbreak frequency. Loaded filters reduce airflow causing a poor environment and elevated energy use. Typical axial fans cannot efficiently maintain the rated differential pressure (DP; 100 Pa) for pleated filters; hence, a lower design filter DP (37 Pa) is used and consequently, more filters are required to achieve design maximum ventilation. Large, common filter banks for multiple staged fans presents significant challenges in using continuous DP measurement to assess filter life, making it impossible to separate filter loading DP from overall airflow DP. A mobile air filter testing (MAFT)...

Timing carbon turnover (δ13C) in weaned piglet’s brain by IRMS Anais da ABC (AABC)
SALEH,MAYRA A.D.; SANTOS,LUAN S. DOS; BERTO,DIRLEI A.; AMORIM,ALESSANDRO B.; COSTA,VLADIMIR E.; DUCATTI,CARLOS.
Abstract Isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is a potential tool that provides time-integrated estimate of assimilated and not just ingested nutrients. This feature turned possible its application to evaluate the effects of dietary nucleotides and glutamate on carbon turnover (δ13C) in the brain of weanling piglets. Eighty-seven piglets weaned at 21-day-old were used, being three piglets slaughtered at day-0 (prior to diet-switch) and, the remaining 84 randomly assigned in a complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (two nucleotide levels: 0% and 0.1% and, two glutamate levels: 0% and 1%). On trial days 3, 6, 9, 14, 21, 35 and 49, three piglets per treatment were also slaughtered. The samples were analyzed by IRMS and...

Behavior and performance of sows fed different levels of fiber and reared in individual cages or collective pens Anais da ABC (AABC)
BUDIÑO,FÁBIO E.L.; VIEIRA,RENATA F.N.; MELLO,SILVIO P.; DUARTE,KEILA M.R..
Sixteen pregnant sows were used. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 2x2 factorial scheme consisting of two housing systems (individual cages and collective pens) and two diets (low [2.67%] and high [13.14%] level of crude fiber). Physiological, behavioral, environmental, and hormonal parameters were studied. In addition, the following productive and reproductive parameters were evaluated: weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion of the sow and piglets, number of piglets born dead and alive, number and weight at weaning, and backfat thickness of sows. Pregnant sows reared in collective pens and fed a high-fiber diet exhibited better physiological responses, indicating greater comfort and better animal welfare. The environmental...

Economies of scale in the production of swine manure Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Losinger,W.C.; Sampath,R.K..
Manure production on grower/finisher swine operations in the United States was examined using data from 184 grower/finisher swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System's 1995 National Swine Study. Two methods were used: one, assuming that pigs produced 8.4% of their body weight in manure each day; another using the difference between feed fed and weight gained as a proxy variable to study manure production. Using this latter approach, a production function was developed. The function exhibited diminishing returns to scale when food waste was not fed to pigs, but constant returns to scale when food waste was included in their diets. The difference between feed fed and weight gained was lower on operations...

Association of the heart fatty acid-binding protein gene with quality of carcass and meat traits in pigs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Figueiredo,F.C.; Lopes,P.S.; Pinto,A.P.G.; Paiva,D.A.F.; Mendonça,P.T.; Guimarães,S.E.F..
The heart fatty acid-binding protein (HFABP) gene was sequenced in parental animals of a F2 crossing of boars of the Brazilian native Piau breed with commercial sows (Landrace x Large White Pietrain). Primers used for PCR were designed to amplify four exons of the gene. The PCR products were sequenced and compared with the GenBank sequences. Differences between the generated sequences and the GenBank sequences were observed for both genetic groups. A total of 246 F2 animals were genotyped using the Hinf I restriction enzyme. Two genotypes were identified, 198 being animals HH and 48 Hh. The Hinf I SNP was significantly associated with weights of loin (bone-in) (P<0.05), jowl (P<0.05), sirloin (P<0.10), and kidneys (P<0.01). These results showed...

Detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in lungs and nasal swabs of pigs by nested PCR Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,F.M.F.; Castro,L.A.; Silva Júnior,A.; Moraes,M.P.; Moreira,M.A.S.; Almeida,M.R..
Fifty-four samples were collected from growing and finishing pigs for the molecular diagnosis of enzootic porcine pneumonia. Nineteen lung fragments were obtained from pigs that showed signs of respiratory disease and 35 nasal swabs were obtained from clinically healthy pigs. For the detection of the bacterial genome in the samples, the nested PCR technique was used to amplify a fragment of 706bp. This fragment was subsequently cloned and sequenced. The sequence of obtained nucleotides was compared with six other sequences of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and 11 sequences of other bacteria available in the Genbank. To measure the sensitivity of the nested PCR, serial dilutions (10-1 to 10-15) of cloned fragments were conducted based on the concentration of...

Partial characterization of a Brazilian strain of Aujeszky’s disease virus recovered from a pig with subclinical infection Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Cândido,A.L.; Resende,M.; Oliveira,M.E.; Bontempo,E.D.; Drumond,B. P..
One Brazilian strain of Aujeszky’s disease virus isolated from a piglet in which the disease had not been observed was studied as for its virulence in pigs. The genome of the virus was molecularly analysed as for their restriction endonuclease cleavage pattern. Fifty-day-old non-immune weanlings exposed to this strain showed no disease although the virus was present in their oropharyngeal area for at least three days. All animals developed moderate titers of neutralizing antibody. Based on number of bands and migration rate of restriction fragments the isolate was classified into Herrmann’s type I group. Latent infection was detected in all pigs by PCR. Some variations were detected in the cleavage pattern of the strain ASB Piau when compared to LA031...

Diagnosis of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in pigs in Brazil caused by porcine circovirus type 2 Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ciacci-Zanella,J.R.; Morés,N..
This report describes the first preliminary characterization of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) isolates from pigs affected with post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in Brazil. Diseased pigs were examined at necropsy and by histopathology. Macroscopic and microscopic analyses revealed lesions reported to be typical of PMWS, which included, respectively, emaciation, enlargement of lymph nodes, thymus atrophy and interstitial pneumonia, and granulomatous lymphadenitis with syncytial cells, among others. Using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or imunoperoxidase it was possible to detected DNA or antigen of PCV2, respectively. The PCR' s amplified fragment could be differentiated from PCV1 and PCV2 from one another by restriction fragment...

The Pneumocystis genus is comprised of pathogens dwelling in the lungs of terrestrial, aerial, and aquatic mammals. Occasionally they induce severe pneumonitis, particularly in hosts with severe impairment of the immune system and progressively may fill pulmonary alveolar cavities causing respiratory failure. Molecular genetic studies revealed that Pneumocystis gene sequences present a marked divergence with the host species concerned. In the present study, the genetic diversity of Pneumocystis obtained from lungs of swines was examined by analyzing mitochondrial large subunit (mtLSU) and small subunit (mtSSU) rRNA sequences. The samples were obtained from two slaughterhouses located in two Brazilian states. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that genetic...

Association of number of tandem repeats in two important adhesins in Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Santos,L. F. dos; Alvarez,J.; Perez,A.; Moreira,M. A. S.; Pieters,M..

Seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus infection in domestic pigs in the Federal District, Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Vilanova,L.F.L.S.; Rigueira,L.L.; Perecmanis,S..
ABSTRACT Hepatitis E is caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV) which is currently known to be a zoonotic pathogen transmitted by pigs. In Brazil, there is no information about the circulation of HEV in the swine herd of the Federal District. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was performed with sera from 449 domestic pigs, provided by the Secretary of Agriculture of the Federal District. Blood samples were collected between June and September 2014. A commercially available ELISA kit was used for the detection of IgG antibodies. High seroprevalence of antibodies to HEV was found, since 304 animals showed anti-HEV positive reactions (67.7%; 95% CI = 63.2%, 71.9%). The seropositivity presented no difference by gender or age. The results suggest that HEV...
