Optimising the use of marine tephrochronology in the North Atlantic: a detailed investigation of the Faroe Marine Ash Zones II, III and IV ArchiMer
Griggs, Adam J.; Davies, Siwan M.; Abbott, Peter M.; Rasmussen, Tine L.; Palmer, Adrian P..
Tephrochronology is central to the INTIMATE(1) goals for testing the degree of climatic synchroneity during abrupt climatic events that punctuated the last glacial period. Since their identification in North Atlantic marine sequences, the Faroe Marine Ash Zone II (FMAZ II), FMAZ III and FMAZ IV have received considerable attention due to their potential for high-precision synchronisation with the Greenland ice-cores. In order to optimise the use of these horizons as isochronous markers, a detailed re-investigation of their geochemical composition, sedimentology and the processes that deposited each ash zone is presented. Shard concentration profiles, geochemical homogeneity and micro-sedimentological structures are investigated for each ash zone preserved...

On the Endogeneity of an Exogenous OCA-Criterion: The Impact of Specialisation on the Synchronisation of Regional Business Cycles in Europe AgEcon
Belke, Ansgar; Heine, Jens M..
This paper empirically assesses the impact of specialisation on the synchronisation of regional business cycles in two core countries of EMU, namely France and Germany. Several specialisation indices are introduced and some first stylised facts about interregional business cycle correlations are derived. Second, region pair specific and pooled estimations are enacted and tested for robustness in order to calculate the impact of specialization on the degree of business cycle synchronisation. However, our regression results confirm the hypothesis of a positive impact only partly, but they underline the problem of a common monetary policy for uncommon regions which has already existed in the DM- and in the Franc-zone before. Der vorliegende empirische Beitrag...

Isothermal seed germination of Adenanthera pavonina Rev. Bras. Bot.
Zpevak,Francisco Antonio; Perez,Sônia Cristina Juliano Güaltieri de Andrade; Buckeridge,Marcos Silveira.
This work reports aspects of seed germination at different temperatures of Adenanthera pavonina L., a woody Southeast Asian Leguminosae. Germination was studied by measuring the final percentages, the rate, the rate variance and the synchronisation of the individual seeds calculated by the minimal informational entropy of frequencies distribution of seed germination. Overlapping the germinability range with the range for the highest values of germination rates and the minimal informational entropy of frequencies distribution of seed germination, we found that the best temperature for the germination of A. pavonina seeds is 35 ºC. The slope µ of the Arrhenius plot of the germination rates is positive for T < 35 ºC and negative for T > 35 ºC. The...
