Descrição do girino de Odontophrynus Salvatori (Anura, Leptodactylidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Brandão,Reuber Albuquerque; Batista,Cristiane Gomes.
The tadpole of Odontophrynus salvatori Caramaschi, 1996 is described from Chapada dos Veadeiros, State of Goiás, Brazil. The tadpole resembles those of the genus Proceratophrys Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, mostly by depressive body in lateral view, small body size, and habitat use.

Natural history and conservation of the rediscovered Hula painted frog, Latonia nigriventer Naturalis
Bina Perl, R.G.; Gafny, S.; Malka, Y.; Renan, S.; Woodhams, D.C.; Rollins-Smith, L.; Pask, J.D.; Bletz, M.C.; Geffen, E.; Vences, M..
Dramatic global amphibian declines have recently led to an increased concern for many species of this animal class. The enigmatic Hula painted frog (Latonia nigriventer), the first amphibian to be declared extinct but unexpectedly rediscovered in 2011, has remained one of the rarest and most poorly understood amphibians worldwide. Gathering basic biological information on this species, along with an understanding of its disease-related threats remains fundamental for developing risk assessments and conservation strategies. Our surveys in recent years confirmed that L. nigriventer is a localised species with elusive habits. The species appears to follow an opportunistic breeding phenology and has a tadpole morphology similar to its well-studied sister group...

The choice of external morphological characters and developmental stages for tadpole-based anuran taxonomy: a case study in Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata (Blyth, 1855) (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) Naturalis
Grosjean, S..
The morphology of tadpoles has long received too little attention in taxonomic and phylogenetic contexts, beyond the use of Orton’s general tadpole types, despite the potential of larval characters for resolving problems in systematics. A possible explanation for this neglect is the ontogenetic variation of external morphology. In order to understand the value of larval characters in taxonomy and systematics, it is necessary to determine the developmental stage at which characters reach their definitive size, form and colour before meaningful comparisons can be made within and between species. Here I use the tadpole of Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata as a model organism to assess ontogenetic character variation. Morphometric measurements were taken, and...

Locomotion and survival of two sympatric larval anurans, Bufo gargarizans (Anura: Bufonidae) and Rana zhenhaiensis (Anura: Ranidae), after partial tail loss Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ding,Guo-Hua; Lin,Zhi-Hua; Zhao,Li-Hua.
Tadpoles of two sympatric anurans, Bufo gargarizans Cantor, 1842 and Rana zhenhaiensis Ye, Fei & Matsui, 1995, were used as model organisms to examine the effects of different levels of tail loss on swimming performance and survival. On average, B. gargarizans tadpoles were shorter and had smaller tails and body mass than R. zhenhaiensis. After 75% tail loss, the survival rate of experimental and control B. gargarizans tadpoles, and of experimental tadpoles of the two species, differed significantly; the number of tadpoles surviving a complete impairment of their swimming ability did not differ between B. gargarizans and R. zhenhaiensis. After 50% tail loss, the swimming performance (swimming speed, maximum distance and number of stops) of the two...

Nova espécie de Hyla Laurenti do grupo de H. microcephala Cope (Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae) do nordeste do Brasil Zoologia
Carvalho-e-Silva,Sergio Potsch; Carvalho-e-Silva,Ana M. P. Telles; Izecksohn,Eugenio.
A new species, attributed to the group of Hyla microcephala Cope, 1886, is described. The new species is close to H. bipunctata Spix, 1824, and it is found in Quebrangulo, State of Alagoas, in Northeastern Brazil. The eggs and larvae are also described and some ecological information is added. The new species is compared with other species of the same group, and with species of closely related groups that occur in syntopy. With H. bipunctata, it shares the general form of the body, the yellow ventral coloration and the orange color of the thighs, but it is distinguished by the dorsal Paris-green coloration (beige in H. bipunctata), absence of a dorsal pattern, light red thighs, and ornamentation of the upper lip with two or three yellow stains instead of...

Description of the tadpole of Scinax auratus (Wied-Neuwied) (Anura, Hylidae) Zoologia
Alves,Ana C. R.; Gomes,Márcia dos Reis; Silva,Sergio P. de Carvalho e.
Scinax auratus occurs in the Atlantic Rain Forest of northeastern Brazil. It is found inside the forest on outcrop rocks and in open areas along the forest border. The tadpoles are found in temporary ponds. Herein we describe the tadpole of S. auratus and compare it with those of other related species of the genus Scinax. The diagnostic characteristics of the tadpole of S. auratus include aspects of the general colour and forms of the body, tail, third posterior tooth row, and jaw sheaths.
